David Gilmour (self-titled) | Extended Play Lounge Ep. 75

I'm pleased to offer my first reaction to a David Gilmour solo effort. It seems appropriate to start at the beginning of his solo output. And, I really enjoyed this album. Though none of the songs jump out and scream masterpiece, the album is a lovely and sophisticated guitar-led sonic wonderland. Enjoy!
I've always thought Roger and David were both better together musically and David was better than Roger when solo.

I've loved this album since I first heard it in 1978!

Why not make a poll with Roger Water’s albums?

As you say Doug, none of the tracks scream masterpiece but the 8th track was Deafinitely my favourite 😀

Amused To Death is currently on Doug's master list. (But not Pros & Cons. so far)

No I couldn't and I don't think anyone can who hasn't been there. I also don't think it's relevant to what I said, it was just my opinion on their music and creativity.

I don't know if this is on your master list from the great prog solo artists, but I would definitely also add Roger Waters' The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking to it.

They needed each other and yet, I can't imagine what that level of artistic intensity of needing to repeat masterpiece works like 'Dark Side of the Moon" over and over again would be like. Perhaps, we all would react differently to that type of pressure. In a band though, there is no way out of the circle especially when you have an expectant audience waiting to hear the next 'mind changing, mood changing, life changing' type of sound....Its like chasing a dream that can turn itself into a living nightmare. Perhaps, its just good to be grateful that they produced a handful of amazing albums that do all of that! David Gilmour expressed in that song how he just couldn't breath anymore...could you imagine feeling that way?

I don't know how Gilmour put up with Waters as long as he did, I guess that is what greatness does...its both patient and blatant.

Trying to say one Pink Floyd member is more or less important than another is negating what made this group so dynamic. Roger Waters is truly a handful of insanity in his own political beliefs and behaviors, but Waters in the 70's was a brilliant music lyricist and music composer. It was Roger Waters' ideas that made such concept albums as "Dark Side of the Moon", "Animals", "Wish You Were Here", and "The Wall" that have made Pink Floyd one of the most iconic bands ever. Forgiving Waters is not entirely easy for me, but as far as that period of time, I will never sway his importance with the band. Lets not forget that Roger Waters is one of the greatest bass players in progressive rock! Again, I am not a fan at all with Waters ruining PInk Floyd albums with his REDUX MUMBLING VERSIONS...but, again you have to separate the 60's/70's Waters from the 80's and beyond!

Just heard There’s No Way Out of Here on the radio today! Love this tune and have since I bought this album in 1978. So glad it won.

Back in the day, this was one of those albums that only the "cool people" had in their collection. Remember, those days one was limited by a budget! Whenever you'd visit friends or attend a party and a track like "There's No Way Out Of Here" came on, everyone's attention was captured... "Is there a new Pink Floyd album?"

If you want to hear what Roger is about, The Wall is a good place to start. It's completely written by Roger. Roger is by far my favourite Pink Floyd member, mainly because there would be no Pink Floyd without him. Also he's one of my favourite songwriters ever. On the other hand, I find Gilmour's solo records kind of boring. Same goes for PF without Roger.

David's guitar and voice are already two easily identifiable elements of Pink Floyd. Richard's trademark soundscapes may have added too much more to the PF sound.

It's funny cause just recently I started listening to this album quite a few times during vacations. It's a great guitar album , I hear major influence from Jeff Beck (who would be a good go-to next ;D ) and "Raise My Rent" has got to be one of his best guitar solos , long well constructed and tasteful... which sums up David's guitar playing as a whole basically. He obviously had his best musical output as a member of Pink Floyd but this album doesn't disappoint at all. Thanks for it Doug , a pleasant surprise.

Oh, I am SO glad this came out top! I thought it was a really lovely, gentle-paced but powerful album when I first bought it back in 1978. Still do, and hearing Doug's explanations and thoughts makes it all the more so. Patience... yes! I love it!
First time, back then, that I realised the friction building between David and Roger, after reading interviews in the music press and realising Roger was becoming increasingly dominant. And I first realised, hearing this album, that I was on team David (and brilliant Rick) more than team Roger, even though I absolutely loved WYWH and Animals.
I confess I, too, keep waiting for Rick's wonderful keyboard colours and nuances, and Nick's (underrated) drums. I confess I do NOT miss Roger's lyrics so much! David would never claim to be a master lyricist, but I find his more straightforward lyrics really enjoyable. And yes, I always felt David was underrated as a vocalist.
Doug, you might want to check out the version of "Short and Sweet" by Roy Harper. David wrote the song and played lead on it for Roy (Who sang "Have a Cigar" on "Wish You Were Here"), and Roy wrote the powerful lyrics. I always assumed that Roy's version came first, but on looking it up now it looks like David's was first (and I have edited my original post to reflect). I like The Roy Harper version better, not least because the order of the lyrics is different and, to me, makes more sense. Indeed, Roy's version is one of my favourite songs of all time. A great live version on YouTube, where Roy comes on "to help David sing it".
Many thanks Doug - this was so enjoyable!

Doug, lets get a move on with the Moody's ... we stalled out but don't just jump to Favour, take your time and follow them chronologically then stop a Favour. Then maybe some Blue Jays but there is a line in the sand where their creativity just stops (Pinder leaves) and then its all boring pop songs ... Back to this EPL, Its great to hear David Gilmour on his own! Rock!

Well, this is a lovely surprise. I love David's first album. While I think you're right in the video description where none of the songs are masterpieces per se, all of them are excellent songs. A perhaps overlooked element of this album is just how warm it sounds - the mixing is superb, especially with good headphones.
