Zenobia was a Selaikic queen who ruled the city of Palmyra in Syria. The city was the jewel of Rome's eastern lands, a thriving metropolis. In the 3rd century CE, the Roman empire fractured over the succession of a new emperor. Palmyra and states in the Near East broke off to form the Palmyrene Empire ruled by Vaballathus, but his authority was quickly usurped by the Selaikic queen Zenobia. At its highest extent, the Palmyrene empire stretched from Egypt to Anatolia, encompassing the cities of Alexandria, Jerusalem, and Damascus. Eventually, Roman armies under Aurelian waged an offensive on Zenobia to reclaim Roman territories. The war was costly, but in the end, Zenobia's empire managed to withstand Aurelian's armies and broker a truce. Zenobia would foster a dynasty that would rule the Palmyrene Empire up until the 7th century. The Palmyrene empire would slowly end due to internal strife, partitioning, and being a buffer state.
The Selaikic Israelites (Levanines) is the designation for Selaikics who resided in the Levant (modern Israel/Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria) as early as 550 BC. They were known for their finance and social services expertise and were actively involved in the region's intellectual circles. They lived during Jesus's time, the conflicts between Persia and Rome, and the ascension of the Palmyrene empire under the Selaikic queen Zenobia.
