Queer Latina reacts to **Heartstopper** (Season 2 - EP 4-8) | Extended and Uncensored

Today, I’m reacting to the rest of Season 2 of Heartstopper (2022) starring Joe Locke, Kit Connor, Yasmin Finney, William Gao, and Sebastian Croft. Freshly minted boyfriends Nick and Charlie begin to explore what coming out as a couple means for them both. Meanwhile, Elle and Tao discover new parts of their friendship, and Isaac goes on a journey all his own.

Comments

Hi! Thank you so much for your wonderful and insightful comment. It's very easy to see how much this show means to you (and so many other people)! I'm glad you enjoyed my reactions to it and I love reading your thoughts on the show itself! And of course, I completely understand about needing to handle your finances carefully - I am in the same boat. I'll soon be reacting to more shows like Young Royals and Love, Simon but probably not for another couple of weeks. I'm very excited to get into them though! Thank you once again for your wonderful comment and for supporting me thus far <3

I'm a bit late because I just never sent the comment after writing a draft for it, but hiii :D Since this was the season finale, this comment will be a bit longer. I (truly) don't expect a reply or anything, so don't worry about that :) Yuup, I also don't really agree with the complaints about the show not being "realistic" enough. Like you said, there are still several queer (and other) mature/trauma tackling topics included in Heartstopper. Plus, in my opinion it's really great and comforting that we finally get to have a show with a large amount of queer joy and an overall realistic but optimistic outlook. Sure, the trauma and darkness are pretty much always a part of our journeys and it's extremely important to be upfront about that in LGBTQIA+ media (especially to teach those who don't experience it about our reality & also validate and comfort those who do experience it), but I personally find it extremely exhausting to have that reflected on screen the *whole* damn time. We deserve some youthful, sometimes cringe, and tremendously cheesy and wholesome stories just as much as people outside of the community do. Heartstopper balances all of that really well in my opinion, which is why it's hands down my favourite show/novels ever. Like for real, my absolute favourite of them all. I always find it super interesting to see that people usually tend to dislike Harry more than Ben– or at least until a certain point. Don't get me wrong, both of them suck, and as of right now they both don't deserve any sort of positive consideration, but Ben's bullying always felt way more personal to me than Harry's. Of course Harry played a part in Charlie's trauma as well & dicks like him, who mindlessly repeat the bigotry they learn from their surroundings, hurt most of us in real life as well, but in the end Ben is definitely the worse antagonist of the two (at least in my opinion and from my own experience with people like him.) While most of what he did can obviously be explained with internalised homophobia and general internalised hatred and abuse, that does not justify his behaviour in any way. I've hated him the whole time. Like, never before have I wanted to beat up a fictional kid as much as him 💀 Harry too, but again, on a less personal level. Additionally, lots of people expect the possibility for Ben to get a redemption arc throughout the show, while I think he deserves nothing of that sort, at least not on screen, or with these characters. It would heavily take away from the amount of pain he's caused. It would either make the show an abuse apologist or it would simply turn too unrealistic, since Ben's currently still very very VERY far from actually understanding where exactly he messed up and how much harm he's caused. It's been confirmed that he actually won't come back for season 3, which I think is the best decision here. What's done is done. There's more I'd like to say about this aspect to really feel like I've fully reflected on it, but I don't wanna overdo it 😭 I don't wanna say anything about what'll happen next because spoilers are rude, so let's just say that those of us who've read the graphic novels were holding on to our seats in the last scene of episode 8, because we absolutely did *not* want Charlie to send that text! No worries tho, not for any bad reasons. You'll see why :D And like you said, it'd generally be better to say it in person anyway Sorry for the length of this, I just love talking about this show and the Heartstopper universe in general. I actually already deleted another paragraph because damn xD Heartstopper has been one of the reasons I'm still around today, so it's basically become a neverending hyperfixation at this point. My absolute comfort show. Other than that, I once again really enjoyed your reaction and am looking forward to continuing this journey as soon as season 3 comes out. You seem like a super cool person :) Idk what you're planning on reacting to next, but for now I'll probably cancel this patreon subscription, because I have to handle my money carefully and can't really afford to let subscriptions run on the side when I don't actually make use of them. I mean yeah, in this case it's really not expensive at all, but still. I hope you're doing well and I'm sending you lots of love. Until next time ^^ <3

As a native french speaker, i can tell you i understood instantly so it is far from bad.

Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoy them :)

Thank you! I know my accent is terrible, but at least I got the word right lmao

I've put Loveless on my to-be-read list! Thank you for giving me the suggestion. It's funny you mention that Charlie's struggles such as the ED were hinted at since episode 1 of season 1, because the scene in the kitchen with the cereal made me think of it for a split second but I dismissed it at the time, thinking that I was just being dramatic since they never outright have a character say anything about it. And I'm actually reacting to Young Royals soon! It's my next show, now that I'm caught up with Heartstopper (at least until S3 comes out lol)

Kristina Espinoza

This is so interesting to me lol thank you for telling me! I always found it weird that I found my attraction to a woman grew 100x larger once I found out she speaks a foreign language like Spanish or what have you. I was always confused like, "Why did that suddenly make you 10x hotter?" lmao

I'm in the same boat as you - I wish I had media/literature similar to Heartstopper and Alice Oseman's other works when I was a teenager but am grateful they exist today. And a few people who do/did matter a lot to me at one point or another in my life are/were either ace/aro or both, so I immediately had sympathy for Isaac's situation and those who relate to him. My friends struggled so much, but I'm glad shows like this and Heartbreak High are now putting ace/aro people in the spotlight so more people can learn about them. I'm so happy you loved the reactions!

Kristina Espinoza

After reading the first three volumes, I can definitely see how the show differs a bit from them, but I honestly still love it! I like the extra storylines and characters they've added along the way, and I completely agree. The actors really have done a wonderful job bringing it to life, especially in season 2. I'm so glad you've enjoyed the reactions!

Kristina Espinoza

I really enjoy your reactions especially to my absolute favirote LGBTQ+ SHOW EVER!!!

Graydon Thompson

Exactly Escargot, that was good.

I loved your reaction so much! Thank you for your reaction regarding Isaac being aroace. As someone whose aroace it's really appreciated some reactions were quite aphobic so it's appreciated. Loveless is a novel from Alice Oseman about realising that you are aroace and I recommend it, the thoughts the main character has are very relatable.💜 I love how subtle they are hinting at Charlie's struggles - the ED was hinted at since 1x1 . It's obvious to people who deal with this themselves or know someone who does, but not obvious to people who haven't. Oh and if you search another queer show to watch I'd recommend Young Royals it's a Swedish show and the third and last season is coming out next Monday. One of the characters is actually a Latino and he talks Spanish with his mum in a few scenes.

I could comment on so much here. This is such a a beautiful show and everyone involved has done an amazing job making it so good. But the one thing you asked that I actually might have an answer for is why are we, as humans, attracted to people with foreign accents. Putting on my anthropologist hat here for a minute, it's quite possibly due to the basic genetic drive to seek out genetic diversity for procreation and continuing the human species. We know that too much inbreeding can cause serious genetic issues, health consequences, and a loss of genetic diversity in a population, which can harm that population in the long run. Seeking a partner from outside of that community helps to increase genetic diversity and keep the gene pool healthy. Scientists now are finding that a general lack of genetic diversity contributed to the extinction of the Neandertals, except for the genes that live on in modern human populations as a result of interbreeding with modern humans and Denisovans. It's a simple biological drive to seek out genetic diversity, then, that might make us more likely to be attracted to people with foreign accents. Even those of us in the queer community who can't possibly procreate with those partners!

I have really loved your reactions to this series! I also wanted to say thank you for your kind words to us ace folks. I relate very much to Isaac's story. I own all those books you showed and they are all great. I'm so thankful for Alice Oseman and her stories. I wish I had them when I was growing up, but I'm so thankful they exist today. 💜

I’ve really enjoyed your reactions to this show. This show is so special to me. I think what helps make even the heavier parts of Heartstopper feel easier to handle is that it is always balanced (if not outweighed) by queer joy. The strength of the supportive friend group and the families that are so happy to support their queer kids are a balm after all the trauma. It doesn’t deny the painful truths of being a queer teen, but it doesn’t wallow in them either. The show (and books) are about moving through the pain and finding healing. That’s a really different take than most other queer media. I’m so excited for S3. I’ve read all the books, but the show differs a bit and it’s so exciting to see the actors bring it to life.
