The Case of Austin Harrouff

Hey everyone! Just wanna say a huge thank you for all the suggestions, it's much appreciated!! My to-do list is, well... let's just say I won't be going anywhere soon! Hope you enjoy the latest!

The Case of Austin Harrouff

Comments

Mike can you please do the Christian Longo case. You're the only one who can tell that story/crime proper. It's just a really messed up murder, while all the others get attention. I think he might be on death row now too?

Jackie Scorpio

brain tumor

Christie DeSapio

This is tragic in every single way. EVERY way. I feel so much pain for EVERYONE here. I'm weeping. And I have a lot of anger towards Austin's parents. It may or may not be deserved, but it's there.

S Shirai

He’s covered Luka Magnotta and did a fantastic job, as usual

Beth Devers

Two words...Luka Magnotta

Amanisha Jay

Yes, What She Said ^^^^

Araceli Mendoza

Love ya Mike 💗 Thanks for the Great video😊 Hope your PC is fixed soon and without dramas😊😊😊

Whytwolf

Mike is probably making the most of one of the three days of sun that Ireland gets each year. 😄☀️

Darrenosaurus Rex

I didn't want to say but I've been experiencing cold sweats and hallucinations for the past six hours. 😆

Darrenosaurus Rex

You okay out there Mike? Only 1 vid so far this week, and Im going into withdrawals! Lol

Rachel Witherspoon

I could be wrong but I think he was actually high on PCP but the bath salt thing just stuck

murmurzz

I don’t know the guys name but if u look up zombie eating guys face in Miami, you’ll see it

Holly

Such a sad case, what was the name of the other guy who was high on bath salts and chewed someone's face??

Sarah Beaumont

Haha I am back, I have some Moosehead for you where do I send it?

Anicra

Wow. Definitely sad all around. Great video, as usual!

Rochelle Fjeldstrom

Feel better

Jill

This case really bothered me. It's very clear he needs mental help. I still think the dad plays a much larger role. He should be given a therapist in prison..... We can only hope. 🙏🏻

Jill

Thinking the same thing, but why isn't the prison system, his attorney giving him a therapist? Something it's seriously wrong that we are not treating incarcerated people. I guess that's only for people already convicted or who can pay for private rather than state or federally-funded mental health services 🤔😠😫

Sheri L Bandy

Well done Mike. Please follow up on this one.. Incredibly tragic all around as you say. It will be a real case study in ethics and human compassion in our society to see how justice plays out in this one.

Sheri L Bandy

Hi 👋 can you do the case of Herbert Baumiester?

Flora Basmajian

Hahaha I am always wanting to share news stories with you but with ad many views as you get I know I’m one of many many many that refer these things to you haha glad you aren’t going anywhere!! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Amanda Glenn

This bothered me too. Austin was begging his father for therapeutic help, but the father seemed focused on the legal aspects. Telling someone you’ll get them help “soon” after something this horrific is just not fathomable.

Linda Payne

The intense mental illness of the murderer hits differently.

SpicyAmyE

You poor thing Shingles is awful. Get better very very soon ♥️🇦🇺🌈

Soffity

Great case Mike thanks for your hard work! Not heard of this one which is unusual.. I'd love you to cover the Rosenbaum case. Lots of video and info online but I expect you've already heard of it...

Sarah Beaumont

?

Christy Hoehn

Why are you so angry with a pathetic mentally ill person?

Christy Hoehn

This sounds like bipolar rage. It’s ruthless and can destroy any man or thing. It’s unrelenting, unforgiving and unstoppable. If you only knew!

David Procell

Thanks so much, Mike

David Procell

The crazy is deep in this one.

Diane Hering

what are they putting in the water around Jupiter!? Bat shit crazy drugs! that other PT guy was just an asshole, I can't help but feel something for this guy, he certainly wasn't school shooter mentality, you have to ask yourself where did it all go wrong? Nice one again Mike!

Jack McCauley

Thanks, Mike, for another awsome video! Very sad, though. If the boy would've been treated, three lives (I'm counting his life as well) wouldn't be lost. The videos he made already show he was unbalanced: he speaks like a child, in some of them. And he also cries like a child, when he's saying he's sorry.

Paula Bernardes-Silva

Hi, there! I received a notification that you left me a comment in the previous video, but I couldn't read it. Every time I tried to open your comment, Patreon kept telling me that, in order to read it, I had to subscribe!!! WHAT?! 😮

Paula Bernardes-Silva

This dad is like the douche of the century. He’s crying out for a therapist while in prison….and he’s like well I intend to. Indeed, tragic. I bet if we dug into his childhood deep enough we would uncover some serious abuse……that quite possible led to his psychotic break….just a thought.

Jill

Plus he was medicating him with Xanax? Later, in the police interview, his dad said that he hadn't been to any psychiatrist. That means that they were giving him prescription drugs with no clinical supervision. Honestly, this whole case happened because the family were negligent of his mental health to the point of abuse.

Payton Smith

United Kingdom LOOKING AT THE COURT PICS AND THE DR PHIL PIC,IS THERE ONLY ME THINKS ITS 2 DIFFERENT GUYS?

Swifty

Ok yea so it’s the meds. He’s still a fat fucking murderer

Christopher Moore

Actually, almost ALL psychiatric medications will make you gain weight, even in the best of situations. So, he didn't choose to be a 'lard ass', he is medicated.

Ansley

Great video Mike! Thank you. Such a tragic story all around, for the 2 victims of course but also for Austin. He'll have to live with the consequences of his psychotic episode over which he had absolutely no control. So very sad!

Fulvia Bottani ni

It's fact acceptance. Obesity is not a good (or healthy) choice. And, but for a miniscule portion of the population, it is a choice. No more fact shaming.

Jojo

Dude body shaming is soo oooh 2015.

Lindsay Beecroft

Imagine if his mum was so concerned that she called for help earlier?! Not laying blame but if I was concerned for my kids I would pick that phone up straight away and the the way his dad just brushed aside this kids enquiry for a therapist made me mad as all hell. Another banging episode Mike thanks so much 🖤

Lindsay Beecroft

Many thx for your hard work & efforts to provide excellent content.

FrankMadeMe

Just... let's not overdo the brown thing right away

Jamie Di

Mr work out turned into a lard ass didn’t he..when I saw Dr. Feeldees I knew it had all gone to shite. Hope boy get enough Psychotropic meds to level him out. Can’t bring back the dead though...

Christopher Moore

EXCELLENT VIDEO MIKE!! Love ya 😘

Jennifer Brown

You can suggest things here, Amy?

Christy Hoehn

I thought the same thing! I was actually holding my breath till Mike said he called 911 5 minutes later 🤔

Samantha OHora

And then when his dad said he would work on it, Austin asked it to be soon while his dad talked over him. 😪😪😪

Samantha OHora

Ugh...so very sad. I remember when this happened and felt so bad for everyone involved, including Austin. I'm glad that the medical experts emphasized in their findings that this sort of violence by someone who is mentally ill is very rare. It makes the news because it's shocking and winds up contributing to the stigma attached to mental illness, and then the stigma makes people suffering from mental illness reluctant to seek help, which makes the mental illness worse. Not a good situation.

bansidheaz

Where do we go to make suggestions??

Amy Knopp

And I’m really sorry to hear about that... I personally have not had to deal with that level of mental illness in my loved ones but I could imagine it would be heartbreaking... yeah, in retrospect you could probably point to a lot of a creative, imaginative child’s behavior as a “sign” huh?

Taco John

Yeah, I guess if you remove the delusion or mania-fueled stuff maybe he’s normal narcissist levels for a late-teenager. In much of the footage he comes off pretty self-important and whatever but I will agree. Was a body builder frat boy vlogger though so I would consider that as an overall narcissistic type of orientation if not “clinical”.

Taco John

One last thing: So many persons with mental illness manage their symptoms by using illicit drugs. Many of them admit to "not feeling right" and using drugs to correct their "depression" "decrease their mania or anxiety" or "stabilize their intense mood swings." Some even use drugs to dull or drown out auditory hallucinations which are often so persecutory or critical to the person experiencing the hallucination. The bad news is that the drugs actually exacerbate symptoms in many cases. I have patients who loved weed, but research has shown that for many prodromal people, weed can exacerbate or bring on full psychosis especially in younger people.

Aurora

I don’t see any out of the ordinary level of narcissism here. He had delusions of grandeur.. totally normal to see such in a person suffering psychosis due to schizophrenia - hence his family speaking on his saying he felt like a superhero or immortal. He was also diagnosed with lycanthropy, which was apparently the cause of his eating his victim. This case is as interesting as it is tragic to me; my only sibling is my older sister who is schizophrenic. She often would go through phases as a child where she told everyone she was an animal, usually a horse, dog, or cat. Not to say this was a sign of her future illness. When she got sick, she would tell me she was a demigod, and that the clouds would part when she was underneath them. I remember her pointing out the clouds’ apparent movement to me when we were in the car. She also has other delusions of grandeur, thinking she is constantly being watched and tortured by unseen forces. It is so sad to see her get sicker and sicker and refuse to admit she is mentally ill.

Marcia Stoecker

I work in a hospital with CPL patients (criminal procedure law) basically patients whom have done exactly the type of grizzly stuff this guy did during a psychotic episode. It's so sad and tragic, so many of them were showing signs of illness early on but few people are able to detect early stages of bipolar disorder or schizoaffective disorder. Once these folks are stabilized on antipsychotics, many of them are actually nice people. It is so very sad, he didn't get the help he needed before hand. This guy was surely in a manic episode that just spiraled out of control. The beginning symptoms of mania are so subtle that many lay persons don't realize what is happening to them or someone they know who is experiencing a manic episode.

Aurora

Thanks so much for the story Mike- but it’s making me so sad…….I still love you tho ❤️

Christy Hoehn

That dad’s phone call…. now THAT is outrageous! How long might he have been crying for help and acting out, and that pos dad covering for him? He really didn’t stand a chance. And so sad when he asks his dad if he got him a therapist, and his dad just changes the subject

Christy Hoehn

We love ya Mike!

B

Wellcome Travis! And please stopp screaming at us 😉😘

Fancy Franzi

Mike you nailed it! It’s tragic all around. I really feel with the victims families but this story differs from so many other cases we see. It’s so sad but punishment won’t be the key to cure anything here, I feel.

Fancy Franzi

Manic episode with psychotic features, initial psychotic break of schizophrenia? He's a ripe age for schizophrenia to emerge. Clearly he's also really narcissistic, though... which is totally unrelated to schizophrenia.

Taco John

Hey Mike, thanks for doing this case.

aeon flux fan

I don't think the guy needs to be in jail. He really should be in some type of psych hospital to receive treatment and where he can be monitored. I don't believe he should be let off but jail or prison isn't going to do anything to resolve what is going wrong with him.

cristy knapp

We love you mike.

Jim ashdown

That phone call with his dad was...infuriating. His dad is talking about getting him off telling him he is proud of him for not answering questions and Austin is obviously mentally ill and asking his dad for a therapist. A sad case all the way around.

brenda redmond

Such a tragedy all the way around.

Rose Tyler

Me too! Always an awesome day when Mike drops a new video😁

Mindy Lynn Bonhomme

this is probably the worst ive felt after seeing one of your videos. austin, more than anyone else in your videos, seems like he was completely failed by everyone around him and the mental health system. i know its hard to predict something like this happening, but he definitely should have been talking to some sort of mental health professional.

Jack Hodge

Wow. That was a crazy one.

Safee A

IDK Y EVERYONE HASN'T JOINED THE PATREON, I LOVE GETTING THE VIDEOS EARLY!! KEEP UP THE GR8 WORK MIKE!!!!

Travis McIntyer

The dad....seems like a total jerk. ‘It’s tough for us too’ and the fact that he still hadn’t organised a therapist for Austin after so long. If you’re looking for a root cause of Austin’s mental health issues - the depression - I think him wanting to impress his dad might be a factor.

Jane Ebbon

At last! A neighbour who actually responded to screams! Poor bloke.

Jane Ebbon

This is a brand of madness I’ve never encountered. YIIIKKKEEESS

Faster River

One of your best ones yet! Love you so much Mike! This was a hard one for sure…no one wins in a case like this! If you ever feel like Austin did in any way…call one of this numbers, it my save your life as well as countless others!

Gerald Rubeck

I'm an NC native and there's several cases from here, Zahra Baker lived 30 miles from me. There's Michael Peterson too, but that's only a couple off the list.

Trish Ross

Florida has officially reached stranger than fiction status. Anytime someone does something foolish or unacceptable a friend and I have taken to saying "this isn't Broward county, you can't just do whatever you want."

Liz C

Mike, love you & thankful for your videos & your big heart. This was a tragedy everyone involved. Thank you for posting the resources at the end.

April G

Many thanks to your husband, and to you for the excellent comment. The more we talk about the mentally ill with compassion & understanding, the more we can normalize getting them help and, hopefully, develop better and broader systems of support for them and their families. What happened to Jeff and that poor couple can be avoided for others if we all learn what to look for, what to do when we see it, and don't wear blinders like Austin's dingwit father.

April G

Just playing devil's advocate here. I saw this crime covered elsewhere and there was more made of some drugs he my have taken that were not tested for (I think there may have been some witness to that but i'm not sure. I saw the victim's sister raise that in the end here. Mike forgot to clip that out lol). I noticed there were no tears when he was squinching up his face nd saying he was sorry. I have no doubt he's sorry for wrecking his life. 26% of American adults are said to have some diagnosable mental illness. I suppose we have to defer to the drs who examined him but on the the hand, based on my experience with the mental health industry with one of my kids, it all seems so squishy and frankly pseudo-scientific. I think there's a fine line between letting go and giving over to some inner extreme rage and a psychotic episode especially if he had done some drug. I think his mental illness takes the death penalty off the table but I still think he needs to pay for this s a criminal act.

dougie

Yes. I am so thankful to Mike for emphasizing the fact that the mentally ill are no more likely to be violent than individuals who are not mentally ill, and in fact when they do commit violent acts, they frequently inflict the violence upon themselves and rarely upon others. Thank you for your excellent comment. You are so right that we need mental health education.

April G

And too much staring in a camera obsessing about your body make you crazy!

Jojo

Drugs are bad .

Jojo

His father....a definite douchebag.....totally ignored his asking for a therapist and totally concerned with the optics and how.it would affect HIM....what a fucktart 😳 Excellent video Mike 😊 Love how you added the mental health hotlines at the end you are always thinkin of others. Thanks for the video Mike 💗💗

Whytwolf

It's sounds like this young man had the many warning signs and symptoms of schizophrenia and he was around the typical age of onset (late adolescence/early adulthood). This is very sad not only for what happened to the couple but for what happened to this young man. If he only got the help that he needed this never would have happened. It is also very important to note that just because someone has a severe mental illness like schizophrenia DOES NOT mean they are dangerous and will commit crimes like this. Thanks for shedding light on this topic Mike and for your compassionate comments at the end. We need more mental health education!

Steph

I feel really bad for Austin and feel really, REALLY bad for the victims. Anyone watching those YouTube videos of his can clearly see that the Manson lamps never lie.

Lisa Henkel

John & his woman liked to kill, too!

Dahlia

This case has always been a complete mystery to me, and barely any info online. Thank you so much for covering it so thoroughly and compassionately.

This World Sucks

Wow! I didn’t know all of these details. So tragic for everyone.

Peri Jetton

Thanks Mike

Jane Pohl

His father" ...this is tough for us..." What? It's pretty tough for Austin too! Maybe if you had gotten him help it wouldn't have happened. He's asking you if you've arranged a therapist YET ...!!! What a shame for him and for those poor people who were his victims.

Vivienne O'Brien

Happy Sunday to me ☺️

Peri Jetton

Thanks Mike, for being able to present this case with honesty and compassion. I 💜 Mike!

ReSearcher

That was so freaking sad.

Courtney Martin

bit like what happened to my mothers friend but opposite he had the mental health problems and was killed because of it (well kind of I'm crap at explaining things) basically my uncle took the piss out of mums friend upset him he caused trouble and my uncle and his son teased him more coming to a head one early morning and they "pushed him over" and he was asphyxiated I didn't know pushing someone could cause that (sarcasm there) they got away with it as well and we don't talk to them

Dominique Bennett -Tripp

Please thank your husband for me (I know, I know, it’s not why you posted this.) He’s an example of all the good Law Enforcement Officers out there. People nowadays seem to focus on the bad. He’s making a huge difference in the world by caring about people and then doing something if they need help. He’s a Cop’s Cop. 👍🏼👍🏼💙

ReSearcher

This really makes you think. Except for not wanting to think about it. Sums up the issue of mental illness. Thank you, as always, Mike. Much love. Brenda

Brenda Brandstatt

Totally feeling the same as Mike here, what happened to that couple was beyond horrific, nobody in there right mind would behave in that way, all the warning signs were there, he tried to help himself, if my son walked in sinking bottles of oil and saying those kind of things I wouldn’t let him out of my sight and I’d get help straight, but hindsight is always 20/20, some people have never experienced mental health before and have no idea how dangerous it can be to that person and the people around them, his definitely also a victim to himself. What a sad horrific story for all involved, very well told Mike smashing it as always, I will be here for the next one X

Samantha Harnwell

Thank you so much for your compassionate comments at the end. This was so sad. We are not in charge of our brains… saw Austin’s search history at the end, burst into tears. My husband is a cop. Last week he did a follow up call with a man for some minor issues the man had called police about. My husband could have made a quick phone call, but decided to just pay the fellow a visit. He ended up spending over an hour talking to him, slowly realizing that the guy may have been sliding towards a psychic break of some kind. This man was babysitting his 3 month old baby while his wife worked. My husband eventually left, drove about 11 meters away and called the ministry of health. Meantime, he looked up the mans record. Over the last serval months, there had been a few minor, but escalating events that were on record. This man had lost his job, although he was a good worker. He seemed to be becoming more violent. The ministry responded immediately, called the mother. She burst into tears…. She had probably been terrified for a long time, unsure what was happening, a new mother, having to work to support their family. Like a lot of police my husband has fairly well calibrated instincts… in under an hour, they had the baby with the mother and the man taken into care under the mental health act. We’ll never know if this man would have broken down and done something awful, but hopefully he’s now getting help and his family is safe. People do not choose to become mentally ill… it’s something we don’t completely understand, complex and sometimes incredibly tragic. But I think it’s a miracle that sometimes, and probably more often than we know, people intervene. Just wanted to give a positive example. Families where mental illness happens - especially with young people - are trying to survive and not make things worse. They often don’t know what to do, but I believe we are getting better as a society at prophylactic intervention.

Janice Bennett

Cloudy up north too

Jack Graham

We lost 😭 at least I have this to cheer me up

Amy G

I'm currently in the ER at the hospital and have been here for 7 days. I was diagnosed with Shingles and it's been a long, painful experience. I'm grateful to have yet another video to keep me company. Thanks again, Mike, for all you do ♥️
