Pop Quiz!

Hey everyone, I could use your help with something. I've been driving myself crazy lately tinkering with thumbnails, and I finally decided to just ASK!

Which type of That Chapter thumbnails do you prefer and would more likely click on? The one with writing at the top and a red background, or one without the writing? Vote below!

And thank you so much, I've been driving myself crazy.

I have always loved your thumbnails Mike!

Patreon

I'd watch either to be honest!

Lilly Wood

I'd click either way! But if you are wanting to entice new people to click, sometimes a name or place strikes a chord with people and that's what makes them click!

Hollie George

i like the writing at the top!

DeLoris Musick

a mix of both is good, but honestly as long as it's a That Chapter video we're clicking on that shit regardless..

panaxhe

With writing. I'm addicted to reading, lol.

Paula Bernardes-Silva

I look for the fun description lets me know what I'm jumping into

Derek Elkins

Mike, long time subscriber. I hope you consider going back to your older way of presenting, more dark genre. (That’s what made this channel become very popular). Now you are almost over-the-top enthusiastic, and it keeps progressing to the point where you will have to start dancing, constant head movement, and much more unnecessary filler talk. The music was amazing in the older videos, then you used the same “cheerful” music score, on the video title, for almost 2 years on just about every video. Big fan, and will continue to watch, but I like your older content much much more. I know your die hards will think I am just “trolling” or “hating”.

Tom Higgins

Writing. Thanks!

Susan Johnson

Me too!

Li Sa

I'm with you. We're in the 3% who chose "without".

Shannon

Wow. I'm in the minority.

Shannon

Definitely prefer with writing, as it suggests to the viewer what to expect from the video. Love ya Mike!!

Tiff De Jong

Writing with the red background.....for sure! :)

Judy Alford

The writing helps, especially when capturing new fans to your content. I watch all of your videos, but someone who does not will like the summary in a couple of words to make the video stand out.

flintodyssey810

Definatly the writing and red background ..I remember when you changed the intro music and we all noticed soo glad you switched it back

Kelly Wolfe-sullivan

That idea is brilliant! I love it!

Marty_61

Branding is always good - that red behind the text is now associated with you so no need to read what's written, we know it's gonna be good!

Irene Veronica

Makes no difference Mike! Pick which you like!

Carolyne S.

At this point I just go straight to watch your videos without even looking at thumbnails as I know I want to watch them. 💜 That said, I voted for writing + red background. I think it looks better, the writing anchors it all together and provides more context. If I didn't know your channel I'd be more likely to click on the one with writing.

Sarah

Writing, only if you want more viewers! We're already sold

Craig

I love absolutely everything you do..but the writing helps. I know you put the same words in the title but when I’m going through the videos making sure I’ve seen them all, the writing on the thumbnail provides a quick and easy reference to help me

Ava Tag

Great minds apparently have a 97% ratio

Vndecim

I like the writing when it's the same as the That Chapter font

Jared Maher

That's what I was thinking. It looks like too much of the junk that's out there. I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on Mike's great shows because of that. But really, either way is fine.

Sharon Krieg

Also, on the glasses... They bring an aire of approachability to you, a certain charm. Thought of keeping them without lenses for a bit? perhaps take them off to clean them by dragging a rag through the frame to show they're just a prop?

Paisley Turtle

Myself, I could completely care less. If it has Mike's cheery mug and a TC logo, it could be an ad for dog poo in a can and I would watch it, he's just that good a presenter. My wife, however, likes the titles since it's her way of keeping track of what she has and hasn't seen, since we watch on Roku and can be logged into either of our YT accounts. That being said, looking forward to the "Tin o' Shite" vid to test my mettle. Love ya, Mike!

Paisley Turtle

Dude, personally it doesn’t matter to me at all. If you have a new video or podcast I always check it out. Your the best! I’m never disappointed. Thank you for your stellar work!

Jennifer Borzelleca

Damn I was hoping this was going to be a bonus video. Lol. Hope you are feeling lately.

Capt. Rick Allen

So the red letters wins I guess

Thomas Tucker

I like the writing - It helps me remember what the topic is...especially helpful when sharing with people who have an interest in a specific topic.

Jennifer Lott

Well since Mike doesn’t do that, so he’s ok with this method. He has such great, exciting videos, he doesn’t have to resort to clickbait, thankfully!

V W

Great minds think alike, apparently!

Kris C

I avoid thumbnails with words in general. There is too much clickbait out there and it really pisses me off when I think I’m going to see something interesting and it ends up being the same fucking boring shit.

Lyndi

For me, there isn't a That Chapter video (well, anything created and/or hosted by you, if I'm honest 🤭) that I wouldn't watch, with or without words or titles, but for practicality's sake & for the sake of piquing curiosity & attracting newcomers, words seem like they'd be a more handy tool. 😁🖤

Amy Bellamy

I think you've got your answer, Mike.

Laura Jane

Esthetically pleasing with the words! P.S. You put out stellar content. Relax !

Amy K Nezat

Thumbnail for sure

Victoria Harris

Aesthetically, it looks great with no words. However, I think they really do help with click baiting or inviting someone in.

Christophtopher

I like knowing what the videos are about on the thumbnails before seeing it.

Ralph Williamson

Some of your pieces I go back to more than once. Having the words helps me find those episodes I want to revisit.

Kate Merriwether

Definitely with words, the other one looks unfinished.

Dragonfyree

With writing. Definitely. Then again, I’ve only been a professional graphic designer for 25 years so what do I know.

Go ADHD Go!

I'm thinking That Chapter audience is the best group of people ever 😊 Mike is just awesome!

Pamela Wainio

This feels like a trick question 😂😂 coz I'd watch anything if it's got Mike in it 😂

Jessi

I couldn't give a proverbial about the thumbnail. I see That Chapter and I click and watch and listen.

Eddie Glass

I think he’s the son of Hillary Swank and Matt Damon. Once you see it you can’t unsee it.

Norm Is Painting

You need to wear your captain hat for the insurance dance.

Norm Is Painting

Definitely the one with words. I like to know what it's about right away, so I know if I am familiar with the case or not, etc.

Tasha Duperron

I agree, I'm never a big fan of reaction shots in thumbnails. I like his most-used format of the thumbnail pic plus the writing at the top with either someone's name or the main topic. Simple and effective.

Emmett Serazin

Agreed

James Herington

Those glasses rock our socks off

James Herington

Whoa - the victim looks remarkably like Matt Damon as a high school junior in that pic.

annika

I'm no marketing expert, but I do know that this is an age-old debate. Context is king, and within your context I believe some text (minimal, as you employed here) is like adding a bit of needed salt or acidity to a meal not only complete it, but to make it more than the sum of its parts.

N

Personally, regardless of the channel, I always prefer the videos that look more toned-down versus clickbait-y (particularly if it's a channel I'm viewing for the first time). I voted for the writing at the top of the thumbnails, because I'm used to that format with your videos. But between the simple writing at the top of the thumbnail pic versus writing, plus arrows, plus circles, plus "OMG"s and reaction shots everywhere, I'd definitely prefer the former. But I'm sure a lot of people out there are drawn to the clickbait-y feel of the latter, so I guess that could go either way. (sorry for the multiple edits)

Emmett Serazin

+1. I can imagine you want to go with what appears to be the norm and what gets clicks, but I personally don’t like the ‘reaction face shot’. Especially when there are victims involved I find it a bit disrespectful. But I’m probably getting old 👵😂

Janneke

I’m so used to the white text on red, though I’d recognize your mug anywhere without it. I’m watching no matter what!

Marci Ball

I like the glasses

Jodi Turner

I can’t get over that 😆

That Titanic Girl (Lara)

Can I add to have only the thumbnail picture and the title? No photographs of your reaction? We love your videos so much. Hope you’re feeling better!!

Carrie aka Mrs. Blackwell

I think the writing is helpful because it helps indicate what the case is without looking at the title. I view it as the thumbnail is impression level 1, then the title is impression level 2, followed by the intro being impression level 3, and after progressing past all three you end with engagement.

Leeta Yzermans

Can we also vote about you wearing (now fake?) glasses or not? 😇😁

Janneke

Like a previous commenter, you could use any thumbnail you like. Whatever is easiest. Thumbnails don’t matter…your quality content is great.

Sarah

I can’t decide I’m about 60/40. But if you ever need help with them, just ask. You know where I am!

That Titanic Girl (Lara)

I meant starting. Lol

Marty_61

I click on everything that says That Chapter! The layout of the thumbnail won’t make any difference for me 😉 but I will vote to help in your decision making process

Kimberly Collier

I also like the old school creepy music you used to use too!

Adam Hughes

Hey Mike! Hope you are staying to feel better! Make sure to take care of yourself!
