Sounds like he was trying to set up an insanity plea, but he planned it poorly. Burning the kid's body was probably an attempt to try to set up a "random pedo stole the kid and murdered my ex" claim, along with hiding the body. The other woman's death was a practice round to see if he could do it and get away with it. An extremely heinous act, either way!
