Quick Question for Tonight's Show

Hey All,

Luis and I are doing a Set Review Review tonight on the show. This is an episode where we look back at some of our grades and approaches to Kaladesh and revisit them.

If you have any specific cards or concepts you'd like to see revisited here by us, please post them here for consideration.

Thanks!

Marshall

I've started defaulting to 16 lands because of the prevalence of scry/cantrips and lack of mana sinks.

Jeff Good

It seems like most limited strategies are viable in kaladesh. From grindy control, to super aggro, to combo, to nonsense. Have you guys found any particular strategy to be favored in this format? Or is it about what you are being passed/what you open/how you're feeling?

Dana Billings

When you have 2 whispweaver angels ; )

Dana Billings

Favourite gearhulks in order? They seem more common than rare - we've opened loads of them...

Nic Bunce

I also would love to hear discussion on this topic. I have been seeing the blue and white enchantment removal going later and later. How high should we be prioritizing these knowing that there is a lot of bounce.

Dana Billings

I really liked how you covered the artifacts first in the set review. It did a great job setting the tone for the colors.

Kevin Goveia

Where do you guys feel Prophetic Prism is in the pick order after playing with the set? Not necessarily P1P1 but I have the card very high on my radar these days, like 3-5th pick easily. I might be taking it too highly but I feel like it does so much of what I want in the set it's hard to say no, fixes mana in all the ways you want (splash colors as well as double casting costs), it's also an artifact, and it has an ETB trigger which combos with cards like Aviary mechanic and Aether tradewinds.

Kilian Johnson

Would love to hear you guys touch on sealed in this format. Which specific cards have you noticed play substantially better or worse than in draft? I've enjoyed sealed Kaladesh more than many other sets.

chitobein

I second this, and would expand upon it further by touching on the effect that the leagues (drafting a deck for play outside of your pod) has had on overall power levels of decks. People pass very playable cards for garbage 13th pick in pack 3 because a 2% chance of playing a terrible card is bigger than a 0% chance of playing a mediocre card in another color. This general concept certainly makes decks more powerful.

chitobein

I've noticed there are a LOT of aggressive decks in this format. It seems that 16 lands is right more often than not as opposed to 17 or even 18 in most cases. Do you agree?

Jon

I think that it would be helpful to talk about why splashing is so conducive in this format. My hypothesis is that even in the absence of uncommon or common tap lands, Kaladesh has better fixing the EMN or SOI. I believe this is because all of the fixing is reasonably costed and five color: i.e. Attune with Aether, Wild Wanderer, Prophetic Prism, Aether Hub, Servant of the Conduit, even Cultivator's Caravan at rare. This might be a helpful follow-up to last weeks splashing discussion.

George Wright

With the go wide and five color decks so prevalent: How high would you take Inspired Charge. Which double cost cards get significantly worse?

AJ Seidorf

Some cards that have moved up or down in my rankings; Foundry Screecher (Down) Metalspinner's Puzzleknot ( Up) Experimental Aviator (Up) Wildest Dreams (Up) Chandra's Pyrohelix (Down) Prophetic Prism ( Duhhh) Thriving Rats (Down) The Modules (Up, Way Up, Down) Long-Finned Skywhale (Down) Aradara Express (Up) Maulfist Squad (Up) Wayward Giant, Bastion Mastodon and Ambitious Aetherborn (Up)

Avenash Pernankil

I'd be interested in a discussion of the overall power level of the format and what effect that has on priorities while drafting. I draft a ton on mtgo and have at times felt almost like I'm drafting cube. Specifically, the power level is high enough, and decks are capable of such busted things, if I'm not doing something at least a little bit "broken," I feel like the draft isn't going well. Also, I second suggestions for Skywhale, Freighter, and Authority of the Consuls (should I be playing this card??). Thanks!

Scott R

Can we touch on long-finned skywhale? I think Kaladesh is a bit too rough for it, with peema outriders and renegade freighters lurking around every corner. I also wouldn't mind discussing the build-around uncommons (e.g. the modules and whirlermaker) a bit more as well, with the exception of durable handicraft since I think that's gotten a fair of airplay already.

Alex Middeleer

Is there anything you've LEARNED this set. Something not set specific, but something that will carry on beyond "this card is good" "this color is unplayable."

Adam hoffmann

I'd love to hear more discussion of each card either in quadrant theory and/or as a role-player. In other words, what context(s) could or would make this card effective? For example, Night Market Lookout - if you can tap it reliably in the developing stages of the game, how much more valuable does she become? How much life does she need to drain to be worth it? In an aggro shell, is she good early? Is she good at parity, assuming a way to tap her without having to attack? Another suggestion is to nominate a 'best friend' card - another card in the format that you think this card will play best with. For Night Market Lookout, I nominate Sky Skiff.

Brien Howard

how would one draft the aetherflux reservoir deck?

Gabriel Rittener

Skywhale All vehicles Riparian Tiger Revoke privileges All build around uncommons

Timothy Ross

Is blossoming defense still first pick-able? On a serious note do you think that running decks with slightly lower creature counts 14+ is acceptable with all the utility spells and artifacts that are around. Are there decks/color combinations that are better at this?

Jason Power

Since the format seems to have a wide variety of speed options (e.g. from the "low-to-the-ground" aggro deck all the way through control builds), it would be cool if you could highlight which cards are better for particular builds and which may be traps.

Matthew Donovan

I'd love to hear about the aggressiveness of the format, and whether Freighter is still the best common to first-pick. I have found aggression a little trickier to put together than I thought, and I was curious if it changed the valuation of Freighter, which excels in aggro.

David Bencuya

I was wondering what your alls thoughts on prophetic prism are now that we have had a few more drafts to reference. I have noticed that this card has been going extremely early and always have a hard time justifying taking it that early. However with all the artifact matter cards and splashing is this something to value more highly or do I just continue to let people over draft them?

Thomas Bryan

Sometimes I'm in the seat that feels forced into drafting W/R (my least favorite archetype). What is the priority order of the tricks available that can help force through damage? Renegade Tactics or Built to Smash? Hijack or Pressure Point?

Kyle Snow Schwartz

I would love a little more talk as but build around like panharmonicon or the modules and see if there are enough there to make those real decks.

Eric Penner

How good is the flying keyword in the format? How should it change your evaluation of a card like Wind Drake?

Kyle Snow Schwartz

also, experimental aviator, consulate surveillance , counterspells in general (I kind of think they have a weird place in a control deck but not sure)

Ben

I'm interested in talk about the modules a bit, too. Have gotten wrecked a couple times by fabrication module decks. Wondering what it really takes to make them playable. Also... is this a set where racing is just good? I've been doing well with a bunch of just tricks and dudes decks.

David Harbarger

Re-evaluating Fabricate and it's power level relative to the other keywords and abilities in the format, has has that changed? Also, initially it seemed like making a servo is almost strictly better than the +1/+1 counter; when is that correct, e.g. evasive creatures like Maulfist Squad and Propeller Pioneer, and when should you make the servo?

Kyle Snow Schwartz

Authority of the Consuls. If I recall, I don't think the grade was that high. I've gotten devastated by that card.

Matthew L Henderson

Some ideas that we be helpful: Which gold uncommons do you like to take in P1P1. Top 5 commons per color re-ranking. It would also be mega-helpful if this could be presented as a dynamic spreadsheet that was constantly evolving, rather than written once and updated once per format. Perhaps that could be a fundraising goal.

Jaeger

key to the city is a good one.

Ben

Some cards I'm curious about: Eliminate the competition Aethertorch renegade How good the modules are Consulate surveillance Fateful showdown Key to the city Thanks!

Winner Winner

I almost only play on mtgo and I've been wondering how masterpieces have influenced the Kaladesh set so far; are they rare enough to not matter?

Mitch Thunderhoofs

Which of the Gold uncommons are worthy of picking first? What makes them powerful enough to buck the 'stay as open as possible' heuristic?

Kyle Snow Schwartz

It seems like Kaladesh allows for a surprising amount of payoff for the more "out-there" cards and combos like Panharmonicon, Electrostatic Pummeler, the Whirler Virtuoso infinite combo, et al. Do you think these sorts of strategies are even worth pursuing in this format or is it better to stick to the normal stuff and avoid the build-arounds?

Dylan Nelkin

Can you revisit the Draft leagues? The cross pod pairings have more of an effect than either you our Luis seem to admit. I have done about 10-12 and not a single 3/0. Many times I have faced a deck in round three that just would not exist in real life. For example, I have a "B+" U/R energy deck with most of the key uncommons, and I run up against the same deck with more of them. In a pod, you would fight over the cards and both be 2:1, not meet in the finals. Draft is no longer "self-correcting". As much as it pains me, I'm going to stop playing limited online. I've given Wizards my $150 this set, and I have concluded that the leagues are not for me.

Scott Oesterling

What is your favorite card to see when you open your first pack? Aside from obviously powerful mythics like noxious gearhulk, if you could open one weird rare or uncommon every draft pack one, what would it be?

Nicholas Kenrick

Why are there so many enchantment removal spells in a set that highlights blink effects. It kills me when I think I'm getting away with great picks for removal just to go against a W/x deck that can just blink their creatures out of pacifism like effects.

julian tavares

I would be interested in your thoughts on Sky Skiff. It seems to be very hit or miss for me and I'm never quite sure when it's good to include in my deck.

Michael Jahn

I'm super interested to hear about Cultivator of Blades again - you were both really high on it in the set review, which surprised me since it is so swingy (usually a sign it won't fit in your safe midrange wheelhouse for limited).

Addison Fox

Hi guys! What are your toughts on the archetypes? Hace you found any of them getting better/worse after the protour? Now that everybody is focusing on the "premier" cards. Thank you! Leo

Leonardo Rodriguez Baca

Critical power/toughness. We've had some weird sets in terms of P/T but KLD def feels like there's a real threshold from 3 to 4 for Power or Toughness.

Jeff Good

Pressure Point and Aerobatic Maneuver: I thought these tricks were filler-grade, but they actually seem better to me now -- able to blunt early pressure and retain value late by enabling alpha strikes (Pressure Point) or re-triggering CIP abilities (Aerobatic Maneuver, meet Cloudblazer). Thoughts?

Tobias Sterling

I'd like to know if I should be considering Ninth Bridge Patrol in my WU skies / flickr sealed deck. I'm finding that the low cost defensive blue energy low drops serve me better. When do you play this card?

Aaron Brottman

In the last episode you touched on how you came around to blue being much better than you thought thanks to the syngery with the sets themes. I'd love for you to go deeper on what cards, engines, and synergies specifically ended up panning out often enough to make Ux decks a thing. What blue cards are worth taking early?

William Gross

Bastion Mastodon! I think LSV especially was way too down on the card in his written set review.

Zach Mayo

What have been the most over-performing cards that have surprised you? I've personally been impressed with innocuous-seeming cards like Wayward Giant. I feel like this is a format where generic big creatures can be very hard to remove.

Shane B

I'd be interested to hear some discussion on which (if any) specific cards or strategies went up or down based on the prevalence of splashing in the format.

Kevin Beck

What are your thoughts on the power levels of the format? Is it a prince or pauper format? When you pick a card that's an energy sink like Multiform Wonder, Lathnu Hellion, etc. how many energy sources should you aim to get bare minimum?

Isa B.

What energy cards are good enough on their own without having other ways to get energy? And what cards that use energy are good enough to encourage you to take more energy enablers?

Andre

Prophetic Prism and Attune With Aether. I thought they were nothing cards when the spoilers came out but I've been proven very wrong.

JDHD

Marshall and Elish, how do you view the creatures that just produce energy? Eg the green 2/1 that nakes three... are they better than you thought? Important? Still D's?

Abe McKinnon

Is panharmonicon actually a viable build-around? Also what was up with LSV's makeup on day 1 of the pro-tour.

Joel Tucci

Wondering if Marshall feels less like vehicles are a trap then he seemed to in the set review.
