This might be a very particular question, but have you had the chance to draft the Kalastria Healer/Zulaport Cutthroat "extort" deck? And, more generally, how do you go about identifying the less obvious or "pre-baked" archetypes in limited (like Spider Spawning in Innistrad)?

2015-10-13 19:56:14 +0000 UTCDo you guys have any favorite casual/goofy formats to play? My friend and i play Three Pack Duels (TPD) where we buy 3 random boosters, shuffle them together and then just play with that deck. You can use any card as a land that taps for any color mana, so we run into some tough choices of playing a card vs. making sure we don't miss a "land" drop.

2015-08-31 18:16:23 +0000 UTCMarshall and Luis - do you have any tips or devices you use to memorize a new set's cards? As I'm getting older, the grey matter isn't holding on to as many details as it used to when I first started playing the game. Since I don't have as much time to dedicate to set review and study, I was curious if you use any type of method or techniques to improve retention of cards as new sets come out and as they rotate out of Standard. Went 3-0 the last three FNMs thanks to your advice in the podcast. I love returning to drafting and I cannot express my gratitude enough that you're both taking the time to keep LR alive and well.

2015-08-21 18:56:47 +0000 UTCA friend of mine has been back to the game for just about a year and has been drafting for about 9 months, but he feels as if he is not improving. He listens to LR and drafts every week. I have seen him draft amazing decks and doesn't realize it. He has no confidence in his ability. My question is, how do I explain to him that he has improved as a player and a drafter without sounding condescending or what other content can I steer him to?

2015-08-05 13:08:01 +0000 UTCHow important do you feel tells are in Magic the Gathering? Do you notice any differences in your play strategy on MTGO vs in person since you have more information of the players intentions? Finally, are there any specific tells from pro players that you have noticed that helped you win? Keep up the great shows! Steve

2015-08-03 17:54:33 +0000 UTCWhat is the fewest creatures you would normally run, assuming you are not short on playables and your non-creature spells justify their slots? Under what circumstances would you push the limit? (I normally include 15-17 creatures, but I'm often tempted to cram in one or two more sweet sorceries or artifacts!) Mark

2015-07-29 23:40:17 +0000 UTCCan you provide any guidance or insights on when to play Gilt-Leaf Winnower (or similar cards)? Should you hold onto them to try and maximize value? If so, for how long? Or should you run them out there as soon as you have nothing else better to play? Thanks for everything! Rob P.S. Marshall, do you not hear the puns or are you reverse-trolling LSV?

2015-07-29 21:17:09 +0000 UTCWhen drafting, how do you decide when to switch colors? For example, if you're five or six picks deep in a draft and all your picks thus far have been solid green and white cards, how good of an off-color card (or how many such cards in a row) will it take for you to switch colors?

2015-07-29 20:42:57 +0000 UTCHello Marshall and Luis, Thank you for such a greatly informative and entertaining show. I am new to MTG and am very enthusiastic about the draft format. Specially after drafting an amazing GW aggro deck at a LGS last Monday. I had great luck in the draft and almost finished 3-0 if it weren't for a luck draw win from my opponent on my last (practically won) game... It really pumped me up! The unanimous recommendation on getting better is "practice, practice, practice...". I get that. The thing is... it adds up... What suggestions would you have for trying to minimize the overall "ramp up cost" of learning to play well and getting the most experience out of our $... Thanks, Daniel

2015-07-29 19:55:03 +0000 UTCWhen the weakest color or archetype in a given format is wide open, is that enough to draft it, despite the lower power level? In Gatecrash for example, because Boros was the "best" guild, it led to multiple drafters fighting over it. Dimir on the other hand, because it was seen as the "weakest," fewer people would pick those cards highly.

2015-07-29 18:04:45 +0000 UTCHey LR! I'm often unsure of when to deviate from the 17 lands rule, especially in new formats. I often jump up to 18 if I have a single seven drop or multiple good 5 & 6 drops, and go down to 16 if I have an aggressive curve and include nothing more expensive than 5 cmc. But I'm not sure if that's right. When should a player run 18 lands? When should a player run 16 lands? Is there any good rule of thumb for this? How do agro/mid-range/control/ramp classifications fit into this conversation. I'd be curious for an Origins specific answer, and/or Magic generalities if you feel Origins in anomalous. Thanks for all your great work! Jaeger

2015-07-29 17:53:53 +0000 UTCGoing to start asking a draft question and a non-draft question every week. Week 1 Draft: What's the worst deck you have ever drafted that went 3-0? Non-Draft: What's your favorite local place to eat in Seattle/Denver?

2015-07-29 16:13:21 +0000 UTCHey Marshulk, LSV always talks about having a plan while deck building and playing the game, but also even when drafting. However, you have also mentioned that you should stay away from trying to force a color or archetype when drafting a format. I was just wondering where the balance is between the two. I feel like after the first two or three picks I can come up with a plan or archetype, but I just don't know where having a plan ends and forcing begins. Can you shed some light on the subject? Thanks, Jeremiah P.S. (My twitter name is JRatliff7, and I was the one who made the fat comment on your tweet about the cookies! lol)

2015-07-29 15:35:17 +0000 UTCHi guys. I'm playing a sealed PPTQ on Saturday and wondered if you had some insight on the Origins sealed format? How fast is it? Are we definitely sticking to 2 colors? Back to 17 lands? Are we just winning or losing based on which bombs are opened?
Gary
2015-07-29 15:17:54 +0000 UTCWhen preparing for the PT with other players, how do you prevent inbred draft strategies. For example, say everyone you're testing with decides that 5 color is the best (like in a Khans style draft). Soon people are fighting over color fixing and dual lands, and at least in your "house metagame" it becomes hard to make that strategy work because there are too many people fighting over it. But the fact is, at the PT this still might be the best strategy to go with because not everyone is aware of it. But now you haven't even had a good chance to practice with it because of your house metagame. How do you avoid this sort of situation?

2015-07-29 14:54:02 +0000 UTCHello Gentlemen! Could you talk about when you decide that your first choice color is being cut in draft and needs to be abandoned, and how likely are you to ride out that color in the hope of a solid pack 2?

2015-07-29 14:52:48 +0000 UTCHey Marshall and LSV, Just wondering, as a player, how do you deal with other players and their salt? Is it best to ignore it (especially online, and as much as you can in person) or is there something you can say or do to make the experience better for the both of you?

2015-07-29 13:55:24 +0000 UTCKnowing when to switch colors is something I have always had difficulty assessing. I always become attached to my first pick bomb despite not seeing any more C+ or above cards in my color/s throughout that pack. How late is too late to switch colors? Is it possible to draft a successful deck after a miserable first pack?

2015-07-29 13:52:24 +0000 UTCHi Marshall, here's a simple one from me. What do you do in regards to preparation of a tournament and by that I do not mean educating yourself about the Meta or Sets at hand, but specific rituals, gather enough food and drinks, what you pack and bring with you etc. Cheers from germany, Bernd

2015-07-29 12:28:00 +0000 UTCHi there! I know this has been addressed a couple of times here and there, but i'm not sure how detailled. I'd just like to know: as "good" drafters/players, does it also happen to you to have really bad losing streaks? Does it also happen to you guys to lose 3, 4, 5 drafts in a row? And do you still occasionnally train-wreck a draft? It's really hard to figure out with all the sweet content you can find from pros. Currently, I'm on a pretty bad losing streak, but since i don't have much occasion to play, I don't have a big sample I can really compare it to, and I have really trouble separating which part is coming from bad drafting/bad playing (a good chunk, for sure, anyway), and which part comes from plain bad luck (I know it's easy to blame it on luck, and I try to avoid it, but I really had my fair share of "one landers" double mull to 5 lately). Being a frequent Magic-video consumer, it makes me kind of feel really bad about these losses, but I know it doesn't really always show the "reality". I'd be curious if you have some approximative figures about how often pros still go 0-3 for instance! In any case, thanks for the nice show :) Regards, Michael.

2015-07-29 12:00:44 +0000 UTCHey! First of, thank you guys for a great show! My question: I've gotten to a level where I feel confident drafting with other players which I'd call very good, good and decent. Something that has thrown me off completely is the rare draft when I'm at a table with some good players but next to me there are two/three whose card evaluation is way off and they seem to picking at random (not sticking to colors either). I start off the draft as usual and then get surprised at a late X, then get a great Y late and suspect that color Z is open. What ends up is that the bad players get trainwrecks for decks and I end up with some good cards but might have found the right color too late or have lots of cards in one color (say green) but two other pretty bad colors. Then I get beat by a player on the opposite side of the table. Do you have any suggestions on how to handle drafting with mixed/unclear signals? How do I realize what's happening (as fast as possible) and how do I take advantage of/salvage the situation? Cheers, Ted

2015-07-29 10:43:17 +0000 UTCWhat is the first memorable rare you've ever pulled, and how did it help you win against your opponent? I'd be interested to see what LSV has to say, especially with his experience with older sets

2015-07-29 10:36:08 +0000 UTCHey Marshall and Luis, We are just coming off the Cube on Magic online, and I being mostly a limited player I have a difficult time drafting decks that are not "fair" in nature. I can't seem to understand how to make a combo deck work and I find myself passing very powerful cards because I'm afraid of not making a good deck for them. How do you identify what to pair with combo cards?

2015-07-29 10:07:25 +0000 UTCI remember you saying you seemed to lose a lot with dragons and weren't enjoying the format. I'm a bit the same with origins, having gone from about 75% win rate over the last 12 months to a losing record in origins. Are there tips that you and Luis could offer about rebooting your performance in the middle of a format?

2015-07-29 10:07:08 +0000 UTCHi Marshall, Here's one I'm not sure about: I've heard on a number of occasions that some cards get better or worse depending on the format (draft or sealed). Can you explain how the evaluation of a card changes between limited formats? Thanks, Neil
