Episode 4-for-1 Ideas

Hey All,

Luis and I were going over ideas for episode 441 but I wanted to see what you thought. We have basically booked Ryan, Jon, and Brian to come on at different times (all of us at once isn't feasible nor is it a good idea I think).

Right now we have some questions lined up for each of them, and we'll likely be doing a special Let's Stump Vargas with each of them and Luis.

We'll also being doing a bevy of "four" related content like top 4s for a bunch of things.

I wanted to throw it to you all to see if there were any ideas you had on what we should do for this special episode too. I mean, you all are our most loyal and awesome listeners, you have to have ideas, right? Right?? :)

Fire away with any ideas and I'll bounce them off of Luis in our email leading up to the episode :)

THANK YOU!

Marshall

The nuances of 4 person drafting!

Jiaqi Cai

We need topics based on the classic 4-for-1 cards: -- 1.) Tidings - each former co-host updates the audience with what's going on in their life. -- 2.) Opportunity - biggest blowout you ever dealt an opponent -- 3.) Cruel Bargain - worst blowout ever experienced playing Magic -- 4.) Breakthrough - when did you first understand card advantage? -- 5.) Meditate - current perspective on the Limited format of Dominaria

Ben Norris

I think 4 crack-a-packs *and* four sign-offs might be a bit much in terms of time investment. But if they could fit in one or the other that would be sweet.

David P

I'd like to hear if anyone has a 4-color deck they've played and they remember being strong. Also, was there ever a 4-color archetype in limited formats of yore?

Peter Smith

That would probably bring the show to a crashing end

Limited Resources

Top 4: 4-for-1s should be a given i think

David Lehner

Talk about some sweet ways to use sagas and kickers

Will Henson

Each co-host does a crack-a-pack, and each does a sign-off. Can't think of anything more value-packed than that!

Brien Howard

Lively discussion to be had around what counts as a 4-for-1? Obviously sweepers 'could' be a 4-for-1, but you need the right board state for that to be true. Really any sweeper is just an X-for-X. Similarly, even cards as broken as Tetzimoc are capable of being 4-for-1s, but really are still X-for-1s that require the right board state. How many PURE 4-for-1s are there really? You always have to get four cards exactly, only cost yourself one, and be able to do this regardless of board state? Hat tip to Shane Garvey for pointing out Meditate. This would meet that threshold unless you factor in skipping a turn and costing yourself a draw step? I mean, how many of these cards are there really?

Eric Lynch

Score 12 points for each legendary or rare missing. Score 24 if missing the mythic. (Cards played in deck to count). Divide score by 1+number of wins in league. Lowest score wins.

Tim Boura

Raffle off a Skype draft to a listener.

Matthew

Do a dominaria draft online and try to build a deck with 4 legendary cards, 4 rare cards and 1 mythic rare card. (A competition between all of you to get as close as possible to 4 4 1) (Would need to do before podcast but can report on it).

Tim Boura

Top 4 responsibilities of the co-host. I’m thinking orginality, the ability to simplify complex concepts, sign offs, and humor.

Adam hoffmann

I guess I assumed Marshall would be ready to finally leave his emotionally abusive co-host, but I suppose Brian coming back would allow Luis to quit having to actually work for an hour a week. He already called in sick on a set review...

Adam hoffmann

You think Luis or Marshall should ask that one? ;)

Limited Resources

Top four Mexican foods for sure. Bound to spark lively debate.

Josh Bell

What 4 things has marshal learned frm his co-hosts, and for each of the 4 what 1 thing have they learned from him? :)

Michael Hutton

Scryfall says 104! 5 of them in Dominaria.

Michael Rawdon

Obviously they’d eliminate Blue! 🤣

Michael Rawdon

And you'd need to talk about Meditate: <a href="https://scryfall.com/card/tpr/60" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://scryfall.com/card/tpr/60</a>

Shane Garvey

Have each co-host do top 4 tips for getting better at limited, but make sure they come up with their lists independantly

Shane Garvey

Talk about sweepers. When to play them, when to hold off, when/how to play around them. Also do lets stump Vargas with a completely random selection of 15 cards

Tristin Diets

BWong needs to record a signoff.

Daniel Schneider

Top four single-set draft formats and your top four fist picks in Dominaria draft so far.

George Wright

Color pie top 4: If Wizards asked you to create a set where the plane was missing a color of Magic, which one would you eliminate (think Alara, but the color is entirely missing from the set)? How would you make up for its absence?

JeFF Stumpo

Ask each cohost to assign the other cohosts + Marshall one of the five colors (no repeats) with the goal being for all of the cohosts to provide the same color assignment. Like a four way newlywed game since they're being recorded separately and can't collude.

Matthew Taylor

Top 4 actual 4-for-1's in magic? Restriction: Luis can't have Tidings and Opportunity both on this list.

James Gardiner

Top 4 4/4s for 4? No idea how many of those exist :-)

Saralyn McKinnon-Crowley

Top 4 Commands (4 abilities for 1 card), or maybe top 4 planeswalkers with 4 loyalty abilities.

A.J. Frank

Top 4 commons you’d be happy to first pick in dominaria

Matt Biddulph

I'd like to hear you guys do a 4th pick crack a draft with the former co-hosts and other friends of the show

Tyler Ward

Top 4 four drops with 1 toughness. Top 4 four drops. Top 4 co hosts. Top 4 top 4s.

Abe McKinnon

Top 4 limited archetypes from any limited format.

Chris Hantzmon

I would love to see the classic "Five-drop or zombie?" redone as "Four drop or (insert relevant creature type here)"!

Toni Mohr

For the sign-off: times you've 4-for-1'd in real life, outside of Magic.

Matt Schneeweiss

You’re all doing a chaos sealed. What 4 packs do you bring, and what kind of decks do you want to build?

Ira Humphrey

Battlebond is coming out soon. Which co-hosts would pair best play-style and personality-wise for 2-headed giant teams?

Matthew Klundt

I’d ask Brian what it would take to bring him back as co-host...and then give it to him! ;)

Adam hoffmann

Who’s the second best guest host on LR?

Andrew J Dufour

Kessig Prowler. The only 4/4 for 1 (kinda)

Josh Feathers

If you could make a cube or draft environment with only four colors, which ones would you choose?

An IRL Rabbit

I’d love a list of cool cards that have he potential to be 4-for-1s as-printed.

cn_monoxide

A focus on sweepers seems apropos, as they result in 4-for-1s the most often. Also, for a fun poll of your guests: The following four cards each have four different arts; who did it best? Unsummon (<a href="https://scryfall.com/search?q=%21%E2%80%9CUnsummon%22&unique=art&as=grid&order=set)," rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://scryfall.com/search?q=%21%E2%80%9CUnsummon%22&unique=art&as=grid&order=set),</a> Doomsday (<a href="https://scryfall.com/search?q=%21%E2%80%9CDoomsday%22&unique=art&as=grid&order=set)," rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://scryfall.com/search?q=%21%E2%80%9CDoomsday%22&unique=art&as=grid&order=set),</a> Shivan Dragon (<a href="https://scryfall.com/search?q=%21%E2%80%9CShivan+Dragon%22&unique=art&as=grid&order=set)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://scryfall.com/search?q=%21%E2%80%9CShivan+Dragon%22&unique=art&as=grid&order=set)</a> & Birds of Paradise (<a href="https://scryfall.com/search?q=%21%E2%80%9CBirds+of+Paradise%22&unique=art&as=grid&order=set)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://scryfall.com/search?q=%21%E2%80%9CBirds+of+Paradise%22&unique=art&as=grid&order=set)</a>

William McDuff

I like it!

Genius or Grifter: Saying "Good Game" to your opponent's enormous boardstate in Arena while holding up Settle the Wreckage

Richard Blocher

The classic 4 for 1 being Opportunity, I would love a segment about missed opportunities that you notice limited players leave on the table, or opportunities you've had in your careers.

Addison Fox

How about top 4 four-mana spells?

Hans Gougar

441 is also 21 squared, so clearly that should demand some additional mathematical homage
