LR Special Edition – Inside the Elite Magic Mind with William “Huey” Jensen and Ben Stark

This week on Limited Resources Marshall debuts a very special episode of LR. This episode was entirely post-produced, allowing a much deeper look at a given subject.

Marshall had a chance to talk with Magic Hall of Famers Ben Stark and William “Huey” Jensen about what separates the very best players in the game from the merely great. You’ll get an incredibly in depth view at the moving parts of the elite players of our game.

If you are looking to level up to the very top, you won’t want to miss this one!

To be clear, when I say "professional" I mean on par with all the podcasts you listed as emulating. That's high praise. My above criticism is incredibly targeted.

(I'm still catching up to all my podcasts). While I'll echo everyone else here cheering the episode - it was incredibly professional and well done - something felt off to me. I think it comes down to a mismatch of style & target audience. Casual conversations like LR to me are akin to intellectually hanging out with friends that I've listen to for a while, whereas a professional style is much more impersonal and better for pulling in new listeners who want tight content over rambling from people they don't know. I hope I'm in a minority (and it seems that way from the comments), but given that I listen regularly, this just felt like it repackaged lessons from other episodes. That's not bad, but just means focusing tone & wording at the right audience.

I have listened to it twice now, first just on my own, and then with my son. We both enjoyed it, and I could see it really made the kid think. Moreover, occasionally he would want to stop the podcast and visit about what they were saying. I think that this topic is relevant not only for Magic, but for any endeavor that requires dedication and a willingness to fail forward through rough spots. Great work on this episode, Marshall. Thanks!

Dan Newland

Very well done! Really enjoyed this episode. Thoughtful questions and very insightful answers. Definitely going to listen to it again to absorb it all. Bravo!

Karl Varga

Hey Marshall, I loved this episode. I would love to see more like this occasionally. I probably wouldn’t want it all the time, since it’s less lighthearted, but I really liked the philosophical aspect. It also made me want more interview episodes. I think you could tie in the current set’s strategy with how it fits into the pro’s general limited philosophy to get more of both of these things.

Alex Middeleer

This is one of my absolute favorite LR episodes. Very helpful insights and explanations from well-respected pro players. Thank you for taking the time to put this together, Marshall!

Brien Howard

Great episode, Marshall. Thanks for spending the time and dedication on such informative content. The insight to pro's thought process seems pretty universal to all formats of magic, as well as, critical thinking in general. I'm really excited for the next one!

Hi Marshall, I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this episode. It must have taken a ton of work, so kudos to you on that. I have lots of thoughts, but ultimately I just want to encourage you to keep at it. Your connections within the Magic community allow for lots of cool content. I like the pre-recorded format, I've never heard a prerecorded podcast on Magic and I'd love to hear more from you in this format.

Marshall, thanks so much for putting this together. Outstanding content. I listened to this on my plane ride over to Vegas, and it really helped me keep my mental game together when I took a huge downswing in variance over the weekend. Took a 1-2 PTQ start and ran it all the way back to 4-2, thinking all the while back to Ben and Huey's words about getting back up after losing and always playing to your outs. I plan on making this episode a yearly replay at a minimum to keep my mental game on point!

I have been a listener for a while but this episode made me finally sign up for Patreon. Thank you so much Marshall! One thing I was wondering: These interviews have been recorded before Huey became world champion. When I watched his matches in the world championship he seemed to be super-calm. Maybe you can do an interview with him on the way he experienced the world championship and what he did to mentally prepare for the tournament?

Jörn Bethune

This was FANTASTIC. Great idea and excellent execution, Marshall, and thank you!

Kyle Stewart

Hey Marshall. you asked for some feedback! I loved the episode a lot. It is easy for pros to ramble on and on and the point can kinda get muddled. I can see how you kept the show on track with being choosy when to edit. one small nitpick, as someone who does 'science stuff' as a job; I wouldn't call it using the scientific method. You might be interested in this: Toure did an interview with a similar goal where he interviewed David Williams: https://art19.com/shows/toure-show/episodes/700ebd45-636a-4351-8e54-22d29484645c

Brody Lodmell

This was an A+ episode. I loved it!

Fernando Meseguer Garrido

Hi Marshall, You said you wanted feedback: I loved this episode. The format gave the speakers a platform to articulate their ideas very clearly, and much more thought out than usual, and, as you said, go much deeper. I will probably keep this episode in my downloads and possibly listen to it again at some point. Thanks to all involved people for the time. Your guests managed to clarify some points about which I had some ideas I couldn't put into words very well, and mixed this with some very actionable advice.

Essie

I think this was an awesome episode :). Obviously not every week but I would not mind seeing this type of episode at least once every 6 or seven weeks.

Johan Jordaan

Not my cup of tea. I much prefer the more casual style but thanks for trying something different.

Peter Carss

Loved the show. Great work Marshall!

Zach Watts

This episode was very good. Production quality was great, and I think there are a lot of takeaways from the content that apply to life outside magic as well. Loved it.

Dan Roach

I really enjoyed this episode. Generally, the level-up episodes are by far my favorite to listen to, as they are generally applicable to every format in magic. Having the cohesive nature of this episode to present how high level players think about these subjects was very helpful

Adam D Brandt

This was a great thing you did. I think it would be good to do a few more episodes like this in the future some time. While the episode took a big subject and covered it well, I do not think it would be bad to ask other pros to basically give their answers to the same questions. I am curious about how much "design space" there is, but I think this was like going out for the nicest meal of the year, it's expensive and you just don't do it much.

Richard Gapinski

Excellent episode, you did a great job with it, it sounded very professional. I would certainly like another episode like this one; maybe one about cubing since it's the closest Limited has to an Eternal format.

Christine Knox

This is the episode I’ve been waiting for ever since you hinted at it about a year ago! Thank you so much. Huge Huey fan, so really looking forward to this. Great to see you again at the PT, Marshall.

Mark Arucan

Wow! I am excited to listen to this. These kinds of depthy examinations are what makes LR more than a guide for limited. LR is also a guide to life for me. So many episodes give me something useful to practice in many aspects of my perception and decision making and outlook on situations and critical thinking and I could go on. <3
