Questions for Marshall for LR 445
Added 2018-06-22 08:31:43 +0000 UTCHey All,
Luis can't make it on the show this week, and since we have been trying some different things lately (the special episode last week) I thought I'd try something different this week too. I'm going to do the show solo, just me. This isn't meant to be a new thing or anything like that, but I thought mixing it up while we wait for M19 to fully be in gear might be fun.
SO, what I need from you are questions for Marshall. They can be about anything really, and I'll get through as many of them as I can when I record tomorrow.
Thanks as always for your support of me and the podcast!
Marshall

Marshall, I love your coverage. You make it exciting, just like a great spots game. It's not a skill that everyone has. Now for the questions: Ever feel the need to take a two week vacation and have no podcast for that stretch? Or is continuity too important to afford a break? What's your take on card speculation?

2018-06-22 22:22:59 +0000 UTCThis weekend I'm going to my first-ever store championship. It's in Standard, but my question is relevant for Limited: when playing at an in-person event, is it bad etiquette for me to 'scout' the table? Let's say my game is over, and I catch some of the game next to me. One player is playing blue-white flyers, and I've got some anti-flying cards in my sideboard. If I'm later matched up against that player, is it wrong of me to start with that flying hate in my main deck? If it isn't wrong, doesn't that mean I should actively try to get as much info about other players' decks as possible to get an edge? Seems sketchy to me. Would love to hear your thoughts... Thanks! --Ryan M.

2018-06-22 20:30:00 +0000 UTCHey Marshall! Big fan! As another fellow member of the Sultai Brood, what pulls you toward these colours? I have friends that are drawn toward other colours. I’ve had my fair share with experimenting in all of the colour pairs & see their value, but my friends seem to have a hard time jumping out of their comfort zones. How would you convince another player to check out something they’ve been missing out on? Thanks! Love the show.

2018-06-22 18:08:27 +0000 UTCOften times in sealed I see people build 2 sealed decks with their pool and sideboarding into the other deck. I was curious what circumstances would occur during deckbuilding would lead to the two deck situation. Shouldn't you always play your best deck? I was also curious when someone who has 2 decks should switch on their opponent. Is it for the element of suprise? A better matchup? or both?

2018-06-22 18:07:35 +0000 UTCI need some shoring up a drafting weakness. I don't know how to draft Blue. When I compare Blue cards to cards in other colors I am not properly evaluating the Blue cards, so I often determine too late that Blue is open. First, let's assume that Cloudreader Sphinx is the best Blue common and Eviscerate is the best Black common, in DOM. Is the common Black removal spell always better than the best Blue common? What about the commons in other colors? I think I understand the other colors, but what, in general, what is Blue trying to do? I see card draw, bad removal (bounce, tap) and small creatures and I feel underwhelmed. How should I evaluate Blue and its gameplan?

2018-06-22 18:02:09 +0000 UTCHi Marshall, apologies if you've already answered this. I really admire the way you've made your passion for Magic and creating content into a career. I'm an indie comic book writer by passion with an (admittedly cushy) day job doing other things by necessity. I'm having a hard time finding the right point to push off and make my passion into my full-time work, and I'm worried I won't ever do it unless I really take a chance and jump in head first. Any words of advice as to how you recognized when the time was right, and how you felt confident taking that leap?

2018-06-22 17:26:56 +0000 UTCLoved the special edition!! So, CABS and UBER seem to be two of the most fundamental, level 1, archetypes for limited decks, according to the LR Philosophy. Do all playable limited decks fall into either the CABS, or UBER models, or are there decks outside of them. If there are, what would they be, and how would you identify when it’s right to play them.

2018-06-22 17:24:17 +0000 UTCHey Marshall! What is some non-MTG media (books, music, movies etc.) that you've enjoyed lately? Do you find that "other" media affects how you approach content creation? Love the show, keep up the great work! :)

2018-06-22 17:19:11 +0000 UTCHi, Marshall - I'm curious to know if you have ever played different limited formats against one another? I guess the subtext to this question is, "Are some limited formats more powerful than others?" Would newer formats beat older formats? Would the faster formats always beat the slower formats? Are there one or two formats that would just be totally busted? For a practical example, if you put together a large event with a pod for every limited format in MTG history, and then had those pods compete against one another (I guess post-draft the pods would be teams?), which pod would win? I'd love to get your thoughts on this! Thanks - love the show! PS. I hope Luis is doing well and is back soon. We miss him.

2018-06-22 16:28:48 +0000 UTCgreat idea marshall! what's your feelings about MTG flavor/story/art...do you pay much attention to it? does card art ever impact your decision making/feelings about a set or cards? love the show and thanks for all the help!

2018-06-22 16:26:25 +0000 UTCHowdy Marshall! I spent some time between rounds/events at GP DFW, last month, hanging around near the coverage area to meet, get playmat signatures, pictures, and have chats with the group (as well as some of the pros on their way out of the feature match area). How much of a mini-community is built by the mixing of the pro and coverage crew crowds, and does it make it more fun when traveling to these events at such a frequency to know that you've got the opportunity to experience the event with those folks? Thank you for all that you do to help translate the mind of the professional magic player into the context of noobs like myself (and for being such a good foil to Luis's trolling -- we all appreciate the additional entertainment value there).

2018-06-22 15:53:49 +0000 UTCMarshall! Are you still playing poker? Seems like we don't hear about it as much these days.

2018-06-22 15:49:37 +0000 UTCHi Marshall - What do you think the mix is between competitive versus casual players who watch coverage currently? As magic becomes more popular I imagine there are a growing number of casual players. Some twitter comments after GP Vegas were lobbying for more pros on coverage. I assume the goal is more higher level analysis. What are your thoughts and approach towards balancing the experience levels of your coverage audience? Who are some of the pros that you think do best in the booth with respect to speaking to viewers of varying experience levels? As an aside I cannot say enough good things about LR. I listen to it as soon as possible every week. You and LSV are amazing, keep it up.

2018-06-22 15:41:04 +0000 UTCIf you could interview anyone about Magic, whether or not they’re an entrenched member of the Magic community (assume they’re allowed to do some research), who would it be?

2018-06-22 14:47:24 +0000 UTCIs the 1-for-1 podcast ever likely to return? I really enjoyed both your interviewing style and your choices of guests.

2018-06-22 14:42:47 +0000 UTCI once stumbled upon what appeared to be an old blog of yours where you posted card alters you had painted yourself. There haven't been any new pieces since 2013 (Prime Speaker Zegana was a good note to finish on!), and honestly I'm still not 100% convinced that it's even really you. You've never spoken about any sort of artistic inclinations you may have on the show, but if the blog is real, you must have more than a passing interest in it. Do you still do alters, paint, or express yourself artistically in any other non-digital ways?

2018-06-22 14:36:46 +0000 UTCHi Marshall, thank you for making an excellent show that has helped so many people including me, become better at magic. My question is, what qualities do you admire about most about the top players in magic, and which of those qualities have you tried to improve yourself?
Erica Whiting
2018-06-22 14:32:20 +0000 UTCHey Marshall, thanks for all the great content. Ive been playing since last October, and this podcast has definitely helped me improve as a drafter. My question is: Lately, Im usually able to go 2-1, or 3-0 at my LGS, or online. However, sometimes I feel like im in the midst of building a good deck during a draft, reading signals nicely, and then mid pack 2 I feel that everything just falls apart. This issue occurs maybe 1 out of every 10 drafts, and then I get a nice 0-3 on my record. Im wondering if you have any insights into this type of situation, and if there are any ways to better avoid these random draft failures. Keep up the great work!

2018-06-22 14:15:38 +0000 UTCHey Marshall, this show is a great idea, thanks for showing up and making it happen each and every week! I wanted to ask what brought you to the Seattle area (or are you originally from there) and what makes you want to stay?
Daniel Gilford
2018-06-22 14:13:31 +0000 UTCWhen you guys talk about win percentage on the show, as in the top players have a win percentage of 65%, are you talking about games or matches?
Brian Thomas
2018-06-22 14:13:27 +0000 UTCHey Marshall, I had a question about handling negativity as a content creator. You've been doing this long enough that I (hope) you know that you make stuff to be proud of, and you are good at what you do. That doesn't stop random folks in the internet from saying really mean things. It seems that every person who puts themselves out there online always has a very vocal minority who works to tear them down, and sometimes their legitimate criticism makes it hard to outright ignore them. How much have you, personally, dealt with this side of the job, and what are your personal tips for dealing with it? Thanks for the great content as always.

2018-06-22 14:06:08 +0000 UTCHi Marshall! What have been your best moments as a player - in Magic, poker, basketball, or anything else?
Toni Mohr
2018-06-22 13:59:41 +0000 UTCHey Marshall, great job on last week's show. My question is: have you recently identified any leaks in your limited game? If so, what were they and how did you uncover them? Also, I'd love to see a special episode where you have a pro shadow a draft and analyze your decisions. Could yield a bunch of interesting content to break down and discuss. Might be better as a CFB video than an LR episode, though...
Alex Middeleer
2018-06-22 13:51:47 +0000 UTCWhen did you start playing and why? Did you ever take a break from the game? Have you ever owned any Power? Lastly- all time favorite set? LR episode notifications are some of my favorite emails to see in the box. Thanks again for my favorite podcast!

2018-06-22 13:29:11 +0000 UTCHey Marshall. I have a theory I want to run by you. In most draft formats, high level players often disagree on the optimal strategies, picks, etc. Usually these players can point to a high win percentage as evidence for their viewpoints. I'm wondering if a lot of the disagreement is simply a function of good players playing well regardless of whether the strategy they've developed is optimal or not. Put another way, a great player with a reasonable take on a format will get results similar to another great player with a somewhat better take on the format. Any thoughts?

2018-06-22 13:01:09 +0000 UTCIn an old mailbag show with Brian Wong someone asked what your Invitational card would be. You said you’d need more time to think about it. Well, check your calendar. Today is reckoning day. What super-cool custom card would you create to represent yourself?

2018-06-22 12:50:50 +0000 UTCThere's a topic that might make a good MTGBreakdown and that I'd love to hear your opinion on. We all know MTGO for all its strengths has bugs and some UI issues. When bugs or obvious misclicks happen that negatively affect our opponent, I think most MTGO players typically feel bad for them but still take full advantage, even if there's an easy way to mitigate it. For example, if my opponent accidentally F6s through their whole turn, it would seem simple and fair for me to just skip mine as well and pass it back, but until recently it's not something I'd even considered. In a Dominaria match recently, I accidentally used Icy to tap my opponent's Short Sword instead of the creature it was on, and they went ahead an swung in. Why is it that in paper Magic, no one would say "oh, you pointed slightly to the left of my creature, so you must have wanted to tap the equipment", but online the majority of players (including myself) take full advantage by default?

2018-06-22 12:45:53 +0000 UTCHey Marshall, long time listener, started around when LSV came on. Love the show! I'm in the midst of planning a Cube with custom cards. The possibilities are overwhelming! If you could design a custom-card Cube, what would you make sure to include? I.e. a specific archetype or combo you think would be fun that isn't normally supported by real cards/Cubes. Look forward to the show!!

2018-06-22 12:11:22 +0000 UTCDuring a recent GP, 2 Multiple GP winning high ranking Pros made errors during a game in our matches. The errors both felt to be a little more than a haphazard mistake. I called a judge in both instances and both times the player was issued a game rule violation. After my round I recounted the tale of the game to my friends. All of them felt the mistakes in both instances were an intentional attempt to cheat. They say I should have appealed the rulings to a head judge and describe how I felt they were intentional actions. I am not really one to create a big scene or "go after" one of these guys, but on the other hand am I having a hand in letting this behavior continue. Do these guys "angle shoot" and go until they get caught? How should I have handled this?

2018-06-22 11:56:56 +0000 UTCHi Marshall! First I just want to say thank you for everything y’all do on the podcast! I’ve done really well with drafts and sealed since I started listening to the podcast. My question has to do with art, what’s your favorite artist and art from the game?

2018-06-22 11:44:31 +0000 UTCI'd love to hear your opinions on MTG Arena. How does it compare to MTGO? What do you see for the future of the two programs? What is your opinion on quick draft version competitive draft? What tips would you give for quick draft on how to build your deck or play differently in a single game format? Thanks for the always awesome content. Quick aside, I drafted at a shop I'd never been to this week and I sat down with my LR deckbox from your Kickstarter years ago. One guy said, uh oh, watch out for this guy, he's a drafter and pointed at my deckbox. Just goes to show the great reputation your show has and how much influence it has.

2018-06-22 11:14:51 +0000 UTCAfter spending years listening to you for an hour a week you guys have become something more than Quiet Little Voices on the other end of my earbuds. I am sure I am not alone in feeling a false sense of familiarity/friendship when in fact you don’t know me from Adam. That leads me to my question. What is you preferred level of an interaction with listers when you are covering an event. The times I have been at a Grand Prix you are covering I have come over and said hi, but my friends seemed a little more sheepish like they didn’t want to bother you. Is it a pain having to glad hand a bunch of random strangers between rounds? Where is the line where a fan interaction becomes a hassle? Thanks for the great show!

2018-06-22 10:50:45 +0000 UTCG'day Marshall, what's your number 1 tip for drafting Vintage Cube? Also - we often hear Luis tell stories about other pros, so I think this is a good opportunity for you to tell us your favourite Luis story!

Keep up the good work man, you bring a level of professionalism to what you do that is unprecedented and a huge boon to the community.

2018-06-22 09:04:05 +0000 UTCHallo Marshall, during a coverage stream you mentioned that you speak german and made several trips to germany in the past. what is the background of this connection with the country and when will you visit the lovely city of Münster for a quick draft?
