We’ll be recording a listener Q&A episode tonight, where you, our most dedicated listeners, get to guide the show with your questions!

Put them in the comments below and we’ll get to as many as we can.

Thanks as always,

How do You make sequencing a habit? Very often I get torn by events. I play quickly, I react instinctively, losing cold blood. Effects are easy to predict: galring blunders, missed obvious wins. How did You learn to keep calculating instead of going with the flow?

Eryk Remiezowicz

Hi Marshall and Luis, this is from my personal experience in drafting GRN. I really enjoy playing this set's draft, but I tasted so many bitter experience when opening a big bomb in the last pack and its color didn't align with my deck. It happened to me like 4 times already (for example, opened a Trostani when drafting Dimir, opened a Niv Mizzet when drafting Boros, and the latest one is opened Izoni when drafting Izzet). That's a lot when considering I have drafted only around 7-8 times this set. I did pick all of them even though splashing is out of the question. The reason is because I know I'll be in great trouble if I have to face them. Do you think it's worth hate-drafting given the condition that you know your deck is quite good, or at least okay already? I discussed about this with my friends, and they said they'd rather pick the best card for your deck because first pick is so valuable, even though it's last pack. The second question is do you think this set's drafting is a lot more luck-based? I can't help but thinking that my draft would've gone way wayyyy better if only I open those last packs first. I know this could happen to every set, but I just feel it's more for GRN since each playable archetype is so exclusive from each other.

Shanin

Hey guys, I was just looking for some quick retro card evaluations from Urza's block: Morphling, No Mercy and King Crab.

James Gardiner

alsorry foe the double post, what do you think about tripas tacos? Have you come to Mexico to have the real deal?

Antonio Valdez

Hello, thank you for the podcast, it's one of the highlights of my week. Now, my question is, I guess that I can imagine how you met each other, but I was wondering how did Marshall invite Luis to join the podcast. How was the approach?

Antonio Valdez

Hey Marshall and Luis! I recently went back to watch some old PT draft videos (particularly Ben Stark's Gatecrash masterclass), and was amazed by how much improvement there has been in both event coverage and commentary from those times. Marshall, I'm wondering what your process is for continuing to improve as a commentator (I'm just assuming you have one given your general approach to all life endeavors). Do you watch old coverage to learn? Are there MTG or non-MTG commentators you learn from or want to model your style after? Thanks so much for all the excellent content over the years, both on the PT and in LR. This show has leveled me up in every possible way.

Josh

Hey Marshall and Luis! I have had no real success in this particular limited format so far. In regards to this format, as well as in general, can you give any advice on telling whether it is your drafting and deckbuilding, or your in game decisions that are causing consistent losses?

Ian Salewski

Hi Marshall and Luis! Would you rather A) Score the game winning dunk in the NBA Finals or B) Win $10 million dollars? (You only get the eternal glory of the dunk. No angle-shooting claiming you can get $10 million from the NBA ;)

Parker

Hey Team! I had a question about a normal 8 person pod draft for GRN where you are playing against the people you actually drafted against. Assuming all good drafters and players, would a normal distribution be 1-2 dimir, 1-2 Izzet, 1-2 boros, 1 golgari, 1 selesnya, and 0-1 Marshall’s 5C surprise? Can a good golgari or selesnya deck have a chance against good dimir, boros, or dimir? Or are you consigned to just knowing that you will have a lower win % because you happened to be on the seat where golgari or selesnya was open?

Q Dig

Hi guys! Keep up the great work. When you talked about Guilds having deep gameplay but a shallow drafting experience, I realized drafting on rails has felt like the norm for over a year (depending on your opinion of Dominaria draft), even if the gameplay is great. What decisions could you make when designing a set to balance strong themes like tribal or guilds - which are newbie-friendly and yield cool decks - with keeping the draft portion interesting and fun?

Ian Keyworth

Hi Marshall & Luis! Love the show. My friends & I are undertaking the overwhelming task of developing our very own MTG set. Purely for drafting purposes in our local community. Luis, what do you look at in your first pass of balancing a card within the context of a set?

Dylan Turner

Hey, Marshall and Luis! This question is more for Luis as it relates to Pro Tour team testing. How are PT testing teams usually decided? I would guess it’s usually from friends who have played together a lot, but Luis, you have mentioned that you’re really good friends with players such as Huey and Owen, yet you don’t play on a team with them. How do groups of friends decide who plays with who and how does that affect these relationships, and why not form one giant amazing testing team instead of separating?

Mark Arucan

The two main limited formats are draft and sealed and I play a fair amount of both. Which of those do you prefer and why? It is clear that draft has a level of complexity that sealed does not (pick orders for example) but on the other hand there are far more choices when building a deck in sealed which introduces its own complexity. How much would you say that skill in one of the two formats translates to the other or can you actually trick yourself by having the wrong expectations as to what and how the opponents decks will be doing when transitioning from one to the other?

Tim Boura

The last time I asked you what games other than Magic you are playing, are there any updates to that? Is Marshall still an only-Magic guy, or have you come around to other games. Since I am also a pretty active DnD player, I'd also like to know if any one of you has any experience in RPGs that you might want to share and do you think there is any overlap between Magic and DnD that you can think of, other than the obvious (that they are both made by our overlords at Wizrads)? Maybe skills that you can transfer from one game to the other? For many games it seems that you can use a very similar skill set, but for RPGs it seems like it hardly overlaps with anythig else.

David Lehner

Hi Marshall and Luis, This is a long one so bear with me. I did a thought experiment with my friends at the local shop about why cheap situational removal spells, like Righteous Blow, which is dependent on a creature attacking or blocking to work, are worse in aggressive decks than combat tricks like Sure Strike. Neither one is able to save one of your own creatures from removal, so that is off the table. When these situational spells are in a set, normally the downside you mention for them is that they don't get your creature through for damage, but isn't that also the case for Sure Strike? I recognize that there are situations where you can get in the last 3 points with a combat trick, but isn't the key difference with Sure Strike that it enables attacks that would not be available otherwise? Where we came down on it was that Sure Strike gets your 2/2 through a 4/4, but Righteous Blow is a 2 for one in that situation. Am I missing something or is this the correct line of thinking?

George Wright

Hey Marshall and Luis! My question is about how to balance picking creatures and removal spells that hold about the same value. If, for example, you're in Dimir, you get passed a pack with an Artful Takedown and a House Guildmage and already have one of each, what do you take? If you have none? One of either? Obviously this varies depending on the archetype, but I would think the core idea is relatively similar. I've always struggled with determining what a given deck needs more, depending on what it already has to work with. Love the show, keep up the good work!

Clayton T. Carlson

1. With tomorrow being Halloween, favorite candy? 2. With today being Mischief Night, any good Mischief Night stories from your pasts?

Patrick

What are some non-MTG articles, books, concepts that have given you new insight on playing Magic?

Ruthi

I've been designing board games since 2013 and I started playing Magic in 2016 as R&D for a card and dice game that I was working on with my younger brother. Louis, as a fellow game designer, what would you say is the aspect of MTG that you try to reproduce with your own games and what aspect of MTG do you try to improve upon - I.E. what aspect did they not get right in your opinion? BTW, the game is called Taco Ninja Adventure and it will be live on Kickstarter on 11/6 (shameless self promotion).

Rusty Scioscia

Hey guys, big fan and thanks for putting out great content so consistently. Love looking forward to this every week. Have heard from you and others in draft videos talk about how this set is very much about finding the open guild and "getting in your lane". What are some of the more important signal cards for you thus far (other than obvious gold cards), and how much does this influence your choices in passing during pack 1 or even 2? Thanks!

Hoyt Battey

Have either of you played in a BOO draft (Build Our Own, where everyone participating brings custom cards, for those who have forgotten Jon Loucks)? What are some kinds of cards that you would want to make sure are in an ideal draft environment?

Jonah Lipton

Hey Guys. Do you prefer hard or soft shell tacos and why?

Dana Billings

Hi. I love the show. I have been noticing that at long events, such as GP's, I often win the first few rounds, and then get into a losing streak. While this could just be confirmation bias or small sample size, I think some of it might have to do with stamina. Do you have any tips about how to Improve one's stamina?

Brian Leaf

You have talked before about getting tired of formats and getting to the point where you are more apt to try unusual build-arounds. This is definitely the case for me with Guilds of Ravnica, which I consider just a step above Ixalan. With over two months left until the next set, do you have any suggestions for ways to keep a stale format interesting? For example, are there any stipulations you would suggest trying? Of course, I could just play constructed, but I enjoy drafting with the guys at my LGS.

James Jones

Hi Marshall and Luis. I love listening to your level-up episodes, and feel that I always take a lot away from them. I was wondering if you can both identify what some of your more recent level-ups have been in your own gameplay? P.S. I'm proudly a Patron of your show, and the content is awesome, but I never received the note and sticker from becoming a Patron. I know it's not that big of a deal, but I was really looking forward to it! Any chance on that?

Stefan Spruill

Hi Marshall and Luis, always enjoy your show, keep 'em coming! This is a silly question but one that has been weighing on my admittedly feeble Magic mind. How do you shuffle your initial deck build? You have stacks of 15 creatures, 8 spells, and 17 lands or whatever - how do you shuffle them all together to truly randomize? I don't want to blatantly mana weave, but I do want to spread the lands, spells, and creatures randomly throughout the deck. Do you pile shuffle, riffle shuffle many times, do a combo, or what? Just wondering what shuffle methodology you employ, or if you even have one.

Nial Van Wagner

Hi Marshall and Luis, I'd like your advice on how to handle slow players (not the grifter-kind, but when opponents genuinely take a long time considering their every move) I feel awkward asking my opponent to play faster, but I also don't like leaving games unfinished and getting round ties. What should I do in these situations to make sure we finish our games, but without coming across as a jerk and making opponents, especially newer players, feel uncomfortable.

Glen

Hi Marshall and Luis! Could you talk a little about "bluff attacks?" For example, how likely are you to attack your 2/2 into your opponent's 2/3 when you don't have a trick? What factors influence this decision? Likewise, how do you go about deciding when to block such an attack when you're on the other side, and when you should instead respect the trick that your opponent is representing?

Mark Donaldson

So I've been playing magic competitively for almost 10 years now, mostly draft and sealed, and I've really gotten good at "playing by feel". I hear Luis talk about how he might not be able to immediately explain why he made a particular game-decision but he could dig down to it if he gave it some thought. I have a good win-rate on MODO and feel like I often make pretty quick decisions based more on instinct and experience than any kind of in depth though process, and I'm decent enough at the game that it usually end up being correct. However I feel like I'm leaving value on the table by not being able to really reverse engineer why I make these decisions, since the ability to do so is the only way to determine when "following my gut" is incorrect. What are some things you guys do to remain as actively cognizant of your decision making process as possible both during and after a game?

William Gross

During an M19 draft red and white were crazy open for my seat and after pack two my creature curve looked excellent. So pack three I was mainly looking for mass pump and due to what I suspect was someone moving into my colors red and white got really thin in pack three, I ended up taking four Trumpet Blasts. I only ended up playing two but it got me thinking. I know there is diminishing returns in limited when it comes to taking multiple of the same card, how would you determine the line on how many is okay to take or play? Thanks guys love the show.

Glor

Or if Marshall wants to chime in beyond the vlog, that's cool too.

Daniel Schneider

I heard a bit about this from Marshall's vlog, but I'd be interested in hearing any comments LSV has on GerryT's protest at Worlds, if that's a topic you'd be comfortable broaching on the podcast.

Daniel Schneider

Hello Marshall and Luis, Love the show, thanks for helping me to better understand magic and maximize value with every game. Do you feel Guilds of Ravnica is a more pure power or synergy based set? As an example, is there a realistic number of dimir spybugs/thoughtbound phantasms/disinformation campaigns ect. where you would want dazzeling lights over capture sphere. Does the answer vary from guild to guild?

Michael Caire

Luis, you once described a PT where you were happy with your play as involving you getting your opponents to make the plays you wanted them to make. Can you elaborate on that? Do opportunities to force those kinds of plays come around game in and game out? Are there specific kinds of decks that lend themselves to them? What kinds of plays can you "force" from your opponents and how do you identify those opportunities?

Tim Gerheim

Hi guys, I started to notice that I've been making quicker decisions in Magic and this actually has been detrimental for me in lots of cases, for example, i fail to analyze certain board states instead of taking time to actually see what could happen. Here's one good example, in a recent GRN draft, i was playing Izzet aggro against Boros, i had lethal on board with a Cosmetronic Wave, played it and died because I had one life and my opponent had Truefire Captain. I ended up 1-2 in the match. Are there any "drills" that you run to get rid of certain bad habits (such as failing to realize triggers that can happen or playing too fast)?

Peter Tran

I'd like to hear this contrasted with Amonkhet, which was the only format I've ever played where 15 lands was acceptable or even encouraged.

D P

Marshall and Luis, do confess that last week's power ranking results completely broke with LR mentality. Buying bottled water in plastic bottles with a few drops of lemon juice seems such poor value to me, both economically and environmentally. Assuming, that tap water quality in the US is as high as it is over here in Europe, you really need to make a stretch, why putting some lemon slices (or squeezing a lemon) into tap water is not strictly better than buying Spindrift in the store. You told us so often you would apply LR philosophy not only in Magic, but in life as well. Now how do you explain this? ;-)

Peter Sievert

I’ve heard that the original Zendikar was probably the fastest Limited format ever. How fast was that? What did decks look like in that format? What was the slowest format of Limited, by contrast?

Star Bright

Hi Marhsall and Luis. Love the show and the depth and variety. I've been playing for years now and am pretty comfortable with Limited Play (thanks, in part to you guys). I'm at the point now where I feel that I could squeeze out a few win percentage and some better plays if I was more comfortable with the more difficult game rules. For example, I have never used the "hold priority" function on MTGO, however, I know there have been certain circumstances when I do not want to let my opponent respond to something before I do. Do you have any advice on when to hold priority? Would I play more confidently if I knew the rules better? When is it time for a limited player to go down the judge path?

DOUGLAS R GREER

Hey Marshall and LSV, looking for some thoughts on win rates on MODO. I draft once a week in paper but do Sealed on MODO for GP practice and general game play level ups. When I started on MODO (RIX), I had a match win rate of low 50s but have worked up to format win rates of ~70% with a very clustered distribution of league records (90% of leagues either 6-3 or 7-2). A couple questions arise from this: What is a good win rate on MODO for Sealed (and Draft if it is different)? And do you find your league records to be clustered, or closer to a normal distribution?

Draft Punks Camberville

Do you ever take into consideration the local meta game when drafting? For example, I regularly draft with the same people. I know that player A is more likely to force red, because they always seem to do so. Or, I know that player B only drafts control decks. Based on where these players sit at the table, I feel like it tends to impact my draft decisions. Is this worthwhile to consider, or should I just be drafting the "correct" deck?

Joey Hall

Love the show! I have an in-game decision making question. In situations where your opponent knows some of what's in your hand, how does that influence your decision making? Do you tend to play out the cards they know over the ones they don't, even if the immediate value of the unknown cards might be higher? In what situations is this a good heuristic, and where is it bad?

Paul Barrett

Also, thanks so much for the show, I look forward to every new episode. Love you guys and everything you do!

Freyja Letki

Could we get Luis (and Marshall, if possible) to power rank ways to "bling out" your deck? (Eg. foils, foreign cards, full art alters, art-changing alters, white bordering... *shudder*, any combination of the above, etc).

Freyja Letki

Hey Marshall and Luis I have a question for you both: Can you guys pin down THE MOMENT when you realized that Magic: The Gathering was most likely going to be part of your lives for good? If there was such a moment: How was it? Where and when did it happen? Thank You.

Francisco Santos

From your comments and the few drafts that I've done, Guilds feels pretty unique as a draft format: the draft itself offers very few opportunities for making meaningful decisions, but the gameplay is deep and varied and the packs are so stuffed with playables that sideboarding is a real consideration. So... it's a lot more like constructed than most draft formats, right? Are there any past formats that you guys can remember that played out like this?

Steve Stormoen

Luis just gonna say "have a good memory" ;P

ScaldingHotSoup

Hey Luis (And Marshall), I reccently started playing Eternal and was wondering if you had any tips or advice on where I can get strategy (ideally a podcast) similar to LR for the Dire Wolf Digital card game? Love the show guys, keep up the great work. [Things in brackets don't need to be read out on the show] [Marshall I just finished watching your World's Vlog, and I found it really touching, and wanted you to know I love all the work you and the rest of Mtg coverage put in. Keep it up.:]

Jethro

Hey guys, I have a question about the power of nostalgia relating to limited formats. Can you name any draft formats that you remembered being awesome, but came back to years later and realized it wasn't all that and a bad of chips? Mine was triple Theros.

Nicholas Walker

Hi! long time listener, returning patreon! My friends Patreons always ask perfect questions! (kudos!), and I always Wonder do you read all the questions raised in this section. If yes - how do you choose which one is relevant/worth reading and which one should be discarded or left as an inspiration for other episodes/topics? I love the show and your energy and commitment - thanks and please keep it up! I'm preparing for GP Sealed Event with you. Ever planning of visiting beautiful Warsaw? Cheers!

Janusz Okoń

Hello Marshall and Luis! Although I put in an effort to get better at the game, I prioritize having fun playing. Since I don't get to draft as often as I'd like, I think I force decks a little too hard to be able to play sweet buildarounds and early Rares, because it might be the only chance I get to check the cards out before rotation. How much do you think this impacts my progression as a player? Is it a detriment to the degree that I should make an effort to stop, and make my picks like a grown-up? Thanks!

Odin Eggen

Thank you so much for all you do. With only being able to draft roughly once or twice a week and never forcing an achatype what do you think is the best metric to measure improvement. I don't want to fall into the trap of just looking at win rates but with such small sample sizes I find it difficult to look beyond that.

Michael Radaszkiewicz

Guys, thanks so much for all the work you put in, for the awesome content you put out every week, and for staying passionate for Limited after hundreds of episodes. As one of many who have come back to Magic after an extended hiatus, I can say you‘v given me a significant leg up with Limited where years ago I never played a single draft.

Simon Huhn

Luis: still working out? Cardio or weights preferred?

Andy Cohen

I'm also going to need to know if you eat your M&M's by color, and if so what's the color hierarchy?

Matt Jeziorski

Always wanting to hear more about cube drafting on mtgo. I'm perpetually 2-1 and rarely crack through to go 3-0. Any tips for getting over the hump?

Matt Jeziorski

Hello Marshall and Luis. If you could design a complete set for limited, ignoring constructed restritions, what would be your goals? How would a Luis Set or Marshall Set be different from a "normal" limited set? Would you create something similar to the masters sets, or go in a completelly different path? How woud you balance mana fixing, sinergy, complexity, power and speed in the format? Thank you for all the work you put on the show, you guys helped me qualify to my first and only PT!

Luciano Naganawa

Hey! I’ve been playing for many years, and one thing I’m struggling with is sideboarding differently with being on the play or draw in mind. You sometimes talk about sideboarding in or out a land depending on being on the play or draw. Can you help me understand the concept better?

Peter Rosin

Hey guys, thanks for your great work and well prepared shows. My question is: In a set with "special" lands (as by now in Guilds of Ravnica the Guild Gates) – when would be the right time to pick them in drafting your deck?

Martin Fischer

Hey Marshall and Luis, Here's a question that I think both Luis and Marshall will like. In game theory there are a variety of strategical frameworks with which you can make decisions. These frameworks broadly fall into "Pure" and "Mixed" strategies. "Pure" strategies have rigid heuristics for individual scenarios (i.e. Never attack a 2/2 into a 2/3 without backup) whereas "Mixed" strategies instead have a range of options to prevent the player from falling into exploitable patterns. For instance, in a format with a -1/-1 trick like Fungal Infection, a mixed strategist might argue that a player should bluff attack a 2/2 into a 2/3 some percentage of the time, but hold back the majority of the time. Assuming a "Mixed" strategy is optimal for Limited, how do we determine what our range of decisions and probabilities should look like? Or is this maybe a bit too deep for Magic and better left for poker players? Cheers, Ian Suzuki

ScaldingHotSoup

If you could do a draft with 3 packs from any set or sets ever, what would you want to draft and why? The packs can all be from the same set, different sets, or in any combination and order.

David Schultz

Hey Guys! Are either of you dressing up for Halloween? Love the show!

Kyle Wells

In the single game arena drafts, do focused sideboard cards get played in the main deck more often, or should they just be ignored while drafting. Does not getting to side board change your draft in other ways?

Mike Hundley

Howdy, Marshall and Luis! I'm a beginner still learning card evaluation. Are singles prices correlated to card quality in limited? For example, Aurelia, Exemplar of Justice is $15 on ChannelFireball.com - and she's an awesome card for Boros decks, from what I've seen. However, Beast Whisperer is only two bucks - and he does work in the right limited deck. Obviously, singles prices can be impacted by demand from EDH, standard, and even modern or legacy players - but I do often hear comments about card price around the draft table and wondered if market indicators may be useful in making my picks. Love the show, and thanks for making it!

Top 5 snacks you can carry on you at a GP

Jonathan Montgomery

Hey guys, love what you do, thanks for such amazing content each and every week. I've found in my drafts that Dimir, while powerful, often times has a lot of air in it (card draw, lockets, and muse drakes... which I probably value too highly), so I've flooded a lot. Is it reasonable to play 16 lands in these kinds of decks? What about pairing few lands in these decks with copies of Radical Idea (I've been on the fence as to whether this card is favorable in the controlling Dimir archetype)... Thanks!

Daniel Gilford

With the discussion about green in Guilds being noticeably worse than the other colors, that got me thinking: How much does the relative power between colors impact the quality of the draft format? If one color is slightly worse than the others, does that make the format worse? Or is it a matter of "You just have to learn that you won't play this color as often as the others" without significantly damaging the format?

Joe Loof

Hey guys, great show. I started out in Magic with limited, and feel good about my game. I recently started taking advantage of all my draft rares laying around to cheaply buy into standard, thanks to Channel Fireball’s excellent store credit program.. #branding . Unfortunately, I’m getting absolutely destroyed. Other than knowing what the good decks are, I feel completely lost, like Adam Morrison transitioning from college ball to the NBA. Are there any tips you can give for a limited player starting out in constructed? Thanks!

Jonathan Montgomery

How do you keep track of your curve properly when drafting in person? I find it easy to do on MTGO, but struggle in real pods where I can't constantly see my picks

Sean De Stefano

The next Pro Tour format is Team Basketball (5v5). Who's your squad?

Scott Pease

You mentioned last level up episode that one of the best thing about Magic is its complexity and the fact you always have more to learn (that’s also one of the thing that i love the most). You guys (esp. LSV) have played for a while. How much do you still learn? Is the complexity still overwhelmingly awesome as it is to us mortals?
