Taking a Few Questions for Guest Mike Sigrist!

Hey All,

Luis and I are back home from the PT, and we are having former player of the year Mike Sigrist on the show to talk Limited!

We have a lot to cover with Mike but wanted the possibility of some questions from our faithful listeners to be answered as well, so fire away in the comments here and we'll pick some for Mike on the show tonight!

Hey All. Special congrats to LSV and warm welcome to Mike! simple and basic question: How does SEALED GRN differ from draft GRN? any major tips around: speed difference (GRN draft seems to be either 1-2-3drop-trick-dead or Dimir decking itself :D) and card power level? even if you don't read my question - thank you for awsome content, approach to life and great advice applicable even at work !

Janusz Okoń

Mr. Sigrist, quick question.....P1P1 - sorcery speed bomb or instant speed removal?

Josh Feathers

Siggy, you’ve gone on record as being a drafter who skews heavily in favor of decks that want to take over and win the late game... even so far as being AGAINST aggressive strategies in Limited, almost, it seems, as a matter of principal. How does taking this stance on Limited interact with the good, nuts and bolts drafting practices LR encourages when it comes down to it, and especially when theres a good tournament finish on the line? Do you tend to simply draft your seat as best you can, or would you rather actively stay away from specific colors or color pairs... Boros in GRN, for example... and draft more closely to what you prefer to be playing? Siggy, how often do you, when it really matters, go aggro?

Hey Marshall. Hey Luis. Hey Siggy.

Hi Siggy, do you think cube should ever make a return as a format for professional Magic?

Joseph Burris

Hi LR Team! Here’s a question based on a discussion we had at our local game store about the power level of the sealed pre-release packs. Suppose you are in a sealed tournament, and you are given the option to choose between 6 random Guilds of Ravnica boosters or the pre-release pack with 5 random boosters and the seeded pack for a given guild. First, suppose that all guilds are equal in power level for the sake of argument. Is it advantageous to pick a pre-release pack over 6 random boosters? Also as a follow up, imagine the actual case where different guilds have different power levels. Is it advantageous to choose the worst guild (e.g. Selesnya) of a pre-release pack over 6 random boosters? Assume that the person making the choice has equal skill level playing any of the guilds. Thanks, and thank you for everything you all do for Limited Magic!

Darien Hirotsu

Hey Mike, when you're trying to decide between two cards while drafting, if one of them is an uncommon and the other common, are you more likely to pick the uncommon because you may not see it again? Thanks.

Which is the superior podcast: Limited Resources or Pro Points?

David Schultz

A lot of things in Magic can feel like an injustice. Mana flood, mana screw, the least skilled member of your pro team is the one who top 8's, having to take a mulligan to four, stuff like that. I find that new players, including me when I was new, can take these things pretty hard. It was helpful to me when my friends explained why these outcomes needed to be possible. Maybe you all can talk about why variance is part of what makes Magic such a great game?

Ryan Glinski

Love the show. Also a fan of ProPoints and have almost forgiven Siggy for convincing me to go Golgari for GP New Jersey. Here's my question. I feel pretty comfortable with the Guilds draft environment, but I have a sealed PPTQ coming up, so any hot tips for sealed? Specifically, what main differences should I keep in mind between Guilds draft and Guilds sealed. Thanks!

Brian Leaf

Hi Marshall, LSV, and Mike! I noticed in the feature pod on PT day 2 that Boros was overvalued there, with 3 drafters seated in a row ending up with subpar Boros decks; from my limited view watching coverage, this appeared to be because people noticed Boros was strong on day 1. How do you adjust to very rapid (here overnight) changes in the metagame, and let it inform your decisions when you sit down to that day 2 draft? For a local gamer like me, this would be like my store's meta changing week to week. In other words, how do I integrate a heavily skewed most recent data point into my drafting decisions?

Daniel Gilford

Gentlemen, In light of recent results at the Pro Tour, should changes be made to mulligan rules? Thanks for all that you do.

Taylor Courser

Hey guys, OG listener here, I actually started listening during SOM block with Ryan! Anyways, this question is for all of you. Early on in a format I find myself relying heavily on the set reviews to make picks. I'd say I'm decent at card evaluation, but typically use LSV's written reviews as tie-breakers or to "double check" my evaluations during a draft or deckbuilding. Am I holding myself back by doing this and should I force myself to make picks all on my own?

Tuli Jakobson

In your article on the most overrated cards in GRN limited, you placed notion rain at number 3, which I found quite surprising. I would like to hear you expand on whether or not you still find that to be true, and I'd be curious to hear what Luis and Marshall think about that inclusion on the list. Thanks for all the great content!

Luis Goicouria (manowarelves)

What are some of things you consider when deciding if board advantage or card advantage is more important in a given game state? e,g, When is it correct to 2-for-1 your self to kill a 4/5, when is it better to cast divination over a removal spell etc. I know magic is super complex and nuanced, but what are the things you run through in your head when making these types of decisions and how do you evaluate them?

William Gross

As a follow-up, how do you balance preparing for both the limited and constructed parts of a PT?

Jonah Lipton

At the risk of being sacrilegious, I have a question about constructed: when deciding on a list to submit, what separates the good lists from the "good enough" lists?

Jonah Lipton
