Video Version of LR 389 is Up - Feedback Wanted :)

Hey All,

We put up the video version of LR 389, the first of such versions. Since you  are the reason we are able to do things like this, I wanted to get any feedback you had.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

1. We recorded this on Thursday night, I flew to Montreal for the GP Friday morning. This didn't leave enough time to edit the video before I left. I did the editing on the plane, but wasn't able to upload the large video file over crappy hotel wifi, so I did it when I got home (Monday). Normally, there won't be a delay.

2. I used the wrong overlay for this one on accident. The overlay I meant to use is a little more refined (though basically the same), and the title is more legible. I realized too late that I had used one version older than I intended, which of course drove me nuts.

Anyway, I guess I want to know if this is a cool thing or not? I mean I suppose if it's just a "why not?" thing, that makes sense. But is this something that adds real value to the show?

What do you like about it? What could be better?

Thanks for making these possible, and for any feedback you may have :)

- Marshall

I really like it. Adding the possibility of seeing also the non verbal communication is cool. Plus, stomp Vargas will be even cooler (seeing the cards is way better)

Hi Marshall and Luis, I think this work best when there is a guest on the show (e.g., Owen, Kenji, etc.) because sometimes there's trash talk or jokes that come up and everyone seems to have a good laugh. I think those are the the types of moments that people would benefit from seeing in a video.

Hey guys, while I think it's a very cool idea, I know it's a "why not" addition for me. I listen to LR while at work or commuting, so the video is not applicable to me. Love that you are still efforting to improve the show!

A few thoughts: (1) Watching you guys yuk it up during the sign-off is pretty great. There's gotta be some value there. (2) The overlay makes you guys so small! Is there a reason you have yourselves in such little boxes? (3) It seems like most of the patrons are like me - commuters. I can't imagine finding a lot of time to watch the video version. However, some of the things that you guys do seem really well-built for this. Having the cards up during a crack-a-draft, for example, would be really interesting. If the consensus becomes that video versions aren't in the cards every week, maybe bust them out for special things like that?

I usually listen to LR when I commute, so a video version is not really necessary for me - but I would like a video version of you two doing the set reviews :) Video Quality seems to be top notch - I like that the overlay is pretty clean and not messy with a lot of stuff everywhere, so hope the improved version keeps it that way :)

A video version would be cool if it was planned to be video pre-recording and if you two were in the same room, but otherwise it falls flat. IMO seeing the cards and your (albeit charming) faces doesn't really add anything to the episode. I find it more convenient to just listen to the audio file through my podcast app.

Card images are great to have! I usually have to pause and switch over to The Gatherer when I'm not familiar with the card and that can be tedious.

Joshua Hewlett

If it's not a lot of effort, I'd prefer this format as the card overlays are helpful to me. I like listening to the podcast, but don't have a ton of extra time to play these days and have trouble remembering what all the cards do.

I listen on commute or working out, so this doesn't add much for me- but as always, really appreciate all the stuff you do to try new things and keep this podcast my favorite. Thanks Marshall!

I exclusively listen to the podcast while commuting. However, this did get me thinking - I wouldn't mind seeing you guys collaborate on a draft video - or at least have one of you act as pilot and the other copilot. Another interesting video/stream would be a listener or other enthusiastic amateur drafting and playing with one of you guys there to discuss the choices, e.g. "I see what you did there - it looks intuitive to most players, but you need to think about...".

I think the only way video is really interesting is if it's live on Twitch and I think you don't intend the show to be live, so in that case, not sure a video version is worth it. I listen to the show has a podcast and don't really see myself watching the show. I would try to improve draft videos instead.

Hi Marshall, It might seem impolite to criticize one another's efforts, but I think we all love your show and politeness is ill-placed here, so I will be frank: I think, you can invest your time much better than doing this video version. Each streamed draft or your in-depth check seems way better to me. For me it is "shrug..." and whilst Luis and you are used to be streamed, I guess, it still feels more comfortable not to be watched and so there might be even a tiny bit of quality lost? (I work remotely and do a lot of skype meetings and prefer it, when the camera is off for whatever reason.) Seeing the cards in a set review or crack-a-pack makes sense, but I think, it is very little value for too much effort. And both your and Luis' efforts are valuable to us :-)

Peter Sievert

Yeah! Generally prefer this to the "videos" on the channel already. I follow magic (ie watch GPs/PTs/and mtgo games for decks that look interesting) but haven't been able to play much. It's harder for me to internalize the cards especially less splashy commons/uncommons if I'm not actively playing so having the cards in the video is good and it's more fun to have the video of y'all. I'm guessing this is recorded from OBS or whatever, so some of this stuff you might not be able to change in the middle of the stream, but the layering is messed up with the red rectangle when you (Marshall) are "big". Would be cool also to have a background from a card or something, even if you darken or blur it to accommodate the text. I'm not partial to the font choice. I know it's not because there are no serifs but it just reminds me too much of Copperplate Gothic, which has lackluster proportions (to me). Maybe it is the small caps. Mostly my opinion there though. I think it would help aesthetically if you framed the cams in such a way that you and LSV are relatively the same size. When you are "big" the relative head size feels a lot closer. Forgive me if any of that was what you meant by the wrong version of the overlay. I'd be REALLY interested to hear LSV talk more about Street Fighter. I was too young/undisciplined to try to play in any professional/competitive capacity, but I love comparisons between SF and MTG. David Sirlin a game designer who was previously a professional SF player talks about it a lot. I'd really like to hear LSV's thoughts on stuff like balance and the lack of randomness in Street Fighter.

Benjamin Santiago

I listen while commuting as well. There's kind of a feel that Luis didn't know he was being filmed :) but a camera angle change might solve that. The video option seems fun to me.

Linda Olbourne

I have to admit that this is at most a 'why not' feature since for me I consume podcasts while not having a screen available to watch (commuting, exercising, ... )

Rob

The card overlays for the Sushi Go! set review appear to be missing - be sure to fix that before the re-review episode.
