Questions for Marshall!
Added 2019-12-06 00:56:22 +0000 UTCHey All,
Luis had unexpected guests at his place and we are working in the show between rehearsals and such for me in LA for mythic championship VII.
SO I was thinking of doing an AMA myself from the hotel room after I get off work. This is where you come in. Fire off the Marshall questions below and I’ll get to as many as I can! Pretty much anything goes?
Thank you!
Marshall

Hi Marshmellow, I have a question what upcoming draft experiences are you excited for in 2020? I know wizards is releasing many more off the wall draft sets in the next year and I wanted to see which ones you are pumped about? Also what is the best kind of pizza?
Ryan F Stroud
2019-12-06 15:56:33 +0000 UTCHey Marshall, great work you do man! I am sure you have been able to travel to many great places around the world. What is one place that you still have not been to that you would really love to explore, or maybe that you have been to but did not get to explore enough. Also, what is your favorite place that you have already explored? I went all over Italy last year with my family and was blown away with everything, especially the Pompei ruins!

2019-12-06 15:03:04 +0000 UTCWhat is your theory to make not drafting better? Is it to get rid of them completely,? Or can they be tweaked enough to not be bad?

2019-12-06 11:31:42 +0000 UTCI’ve been mulling over the idea recently that in a best-of-one draft environment it makes sense to lean more towards aggressive strategies than in best-of-three. The thinking is Aggro decks get worse post-sideboard, meaning they’re relatively better game one. What do you think?

2019-12-06 11:22:11 +0000 UTCWhat advice would you give your younger self if that was possible?

2019-12-06 07:36:16 +0000 UTCDid you ever think about becoming a speaker of audiobooks or something like that? I'd consider your voice appropriate, even for children's books. It can be very calming and it's always comfortable to listen to it.

2019-12-06 06:51:14 +0000 UTCWhat draft format do you think is the most underrated? Most people have a luke warm or poor opinion on it, but you still have a soft spot. For myself, I really enjoyed Scars of Mirrodin despite people’s gripes on Infect. Thanks for all your work!
Cory Enriquez

2019-12-06 05:08:42 +0000 UTCHey Marshall! Why did you quit poker? Was it because you found that magic was a more satisfying game and you would rather dedicate your time to it instead? Circumstantial? As someone who juggles both games in my life I’d love to hear your opinion.

2019-12-06 04:13:03 +0000 UTCAny plans to do a show on drafting the Mystery Packs. I took my son (14) and 2 of his friends to the MagicFest in Richmond and we did one draft and one sealed with the Mystery Packs. It was a blast — but if I go again I would love to be a bit more prepared.

2019-12-06 03:48:45 +0000 UTCWhat do you anticipate a Commander Legends draft will look like? How will they work in availability of legendary creatures, availability of cards in your color identity, etc. alongside the traditional draft experience?

2019-12-06 02:54:43 +0000 UTCIt seems like coverage starts pretty early in the day and goes until pretty late at night, especially on the first two days. I’ve been wondering—how do you guys eat and sleep and everything? Sometimes everybody looks a bit tired in the morning on day 2 and 3. :-)

2019-12-06 02:49:29 +0000 UTCHi Marsh! First off, thanks for introducing me to process-oriented thinking, I try to apply those principles as a high school teacher every day. What are some mechanics that you’d like to see return in an upcoming set that haven’t been printed for the last 5-6 years? (Other than flashback!)

2019-12-06 02:26:01 +0000 UTCFor the record, I think some of the struggles of formats feeling too repeatable with obviously superior strategies (think aggro's reign around KLD/AER, AKH, the decidedly Dimir format of GRN or the similarly Dimir or sultai heavy format of ELD) has led to quickly stale tastes regarding limited recently. Couple that with an onslaught of different limited products released each year with the balance of strategies in sets being a consideration in the broader scope, i.e. making sure there's an aggro set, a mid-range set, a controller durdle set each year as opposed to making sure each strategy is potentially viable at the least in each set. I know thats a tall ask, but it seems doable. Not to even start on the color imbalances with some colors being beyond amazing and others being stone unplayable. Thanks for answering questions this week, hope you don't mind the limited-adjacent question and shared thoughts as opposed to something more personal!
Joey
2019-12-06 02:20:03 +0000 UTCMarshall, what do you think of the state of limited's popularity? I've not done a physical paper draft in years, and most of the time I bring it up at an LGS, people look at me like I'm speaking a foreign language. With WotC recently confirming that commander seems to be the most popular format, why do you think limited has fallen out of favor as Magic's preferred format? What do you think has to be done?
Joey
2019-12-06 02:14:00 +0000 UTCYou’re into watches. What’s your grail watch (the watch you hope one day to be able to afford)?
Paul Vidal
2019-12-06 02:12:16 +0000 UTCSeveral drafters at my LGS really prioritize "hate drafting" aka taking cards they don't plan on playing, but don't want to play against. They often think they are being next level sneaky by doing this. Even early in the draft they'll proclaim "I don't want to play against that!" as they hate draft away. At that point, I feel like they are just not in the deck they should be in. I personally think hate drafting doesn't solve anything, as you probably passing up on playables for your deck. Am I wrong?
Joey Hall
2019-12-06 02:12:11 +0000 UTCHi Marshall, do you have any predictions on reprints in the upcoming returns to Theros and Zendikar? Do you have particular cards you'd like to see return?

2019-12-06 01:44:13 +0000 UTCWhat is your approach to teaching brand new players MTG? I like the Brian DeMars, “limited constructed” idea, but even simpler, with 5 mono-colored 40 card decks. ://www.channelfireball.com/all-strategy/articles/introducing-the-40-card-limited-constructed-format/
Will Neil
2019-12-06 01:39:39 +0000 UTCWhile I understand why they have stopped, I still really miss the GP videos from the breakdown. Any plans to do anything else like them in the future?

2019-12-06 01:27:17 +0000 UTCHi Marshall! Long time listener, first time caller. If we’re allowed to talk about a cube - if you were designing a four colour cube, which colour would you cut, and why? How do you feel about oppressive cards, like mind twist, opposition, stax, or winter orb? Do these cards add more feel bad moments than they do fun?

2019-12-06 01:12:17 +0000 UTCHey Marshall, your humans of magic episode was really interesting, thanks for putting yourself out there and opening up. Feel free to skip this question if it is to personal... anything goes? Do you find it hard to maintain a long-term romantic relationship when you travel so much? Love everything you do for the Magic community, keep it up!

2019-12-06 01:05:56 +0000 UTCOverall I was just curious about how you feel about Eldraine as a set? I’ve had a tough time enjoying it in a limited format, it’s awkward to draft. but I really love the way it ‘plays well with others’ building standard decks.
Cody Tumblin
2019-12-06 01:02:45 +0000 UTCHey Marshall! I'm curious, how do you take your coffee?
