Questions for LR 545

Hey All,

Luis and I will be doing a Q&A episode tomorrow on LR 545, so fire away your questions below in the comments and we’ll get to as many as we can!

Your questions can be Ikoria related, Limited related, heck even life questions or nonsense is ok.

Thank you!

Marshall

Hey Marshal and LSV, love what you're doing keep up the marvelous Work! When watching streams from top players I recognize that they hold their cards back way much longer than I do. They seem to play from a medium advantaged position that bears the risk that the opponent top decks their bomb rather than going all in and risking blow out (but of course potentially tieing up faster). How do you approach this Situation, which tips to improve my Assessment of the Situation. Thanks, BlueAndi

Andreas Mueller

Hey Marshall, hey Luis! Listening to the recent Lords of Limited episode, Ben and Ethan seem to have quite strong feelings about differences between BO3 and BO1, in particular due to the hand smoothing in the latter. For example they advocate accounting for curve-outs much more and evaluate certain cards differently, like the ultimatums. Do you two share a similar opinion? Do you have any other thoughts for a primary BO1 player?

What is a mechanic that you would like to see return to draft?

frank Shaskus

Have you ever felt disillusioned with magic because of the set or constructed environment where you don't really feel like playing. How do you cope with those situations?

Kari Malsom

During a draft, when is it correct to stop taking premium removal spells in favor of cards that are worse in a vacuum but offer better synergy or satisfy some other need for your deck? I had a draft during Ikoria where I ended up with six Blood Curdle and a pile of other removal spells, but it felt like the deck didn't do anything to win. Yet at the same time, every time I was picking it seemed like I was looking at an excellent removal spell or a somewhat mediocre creature. What factors do you consider for changing the valuation of premium removal during a draft? Any good examples from Ikoria that might illustrate the point?

Hi Marshall and Luis, long time listener, first time caller. I have a question about LGS culture. I live close to several stores and have trouble deciding which to attend. The closest is a small store, but it's more focused on miniature games and magic is relegated to Tuesday's, but has the casual play feel I like. There are two other stores a bit farther away, but have a much more competitive culture with some obnoxious people. So my question(s) is, what was your lgs experience like when you were starting out, and how do you think arena and covid has impacted store culture?

Jonathan Hill

When is it right to hold mutate creatures? For example, I often find myself struggling to decide whether to just yeet my necropanther on turn 3, or wait to get value by re-buying a farfinder or something. What’s your heuristic in these situations? Thanks!

Jonathan Montgomery

have you had any fun experiences as a high-schooler or such working that you would like to share.

theblackerlotus

Flavor is a huge part of my personal Magic experience. How about you two? Does art, name and flavor text help you to grasp the cards mechanics and help in its evaluation? Thanks for your great work!

Martin Fischer

Marshall: Do you first-pick LeBron or Jordan in your team's NBA draft? Luis: Smoked salmon or regular cooked salmon?

Ed Stackler

Hey Marshall and LSV! I seem to have a problem drafting very synergistic sets like Ikoria, I either mess around for too long taking the most powerful card for the first few picks and end up with an unfocused deck, or commit early and get punished when the cards dry up. Any tips for drafting this style of set? Stay safe.

Chris Fisher

How do you feel about companions in Sealed? How far would you go to include them there? Which go up (Keruga?), which go down (Lurrrus?) compared to Draft? I recently decided not to companion Obosh and or Umori in a pool, bec I would have had to let too many bombs/spells (in the 4-slot) in the side. I felt very good about the deck and got my 40 QP out of the PPTQ easily. Still I wonder if it was correct after all, if any "fine" build with either of the companions in action would have been better.

Peter Sievert

Some recent sets felt like they have been designed by some sort of algorithm. Have either of yourselves heard of any such computer assistance in set and card design? - Bones

I have a friend whose new to magic. The removal of the cost barrier to entry finally got him to join a larger group of us . Do you think this effect could ultimately effect the speed at which limited formats evolve and or become "solved"? I pointed him to your introductory / basics episodes as a way to get him into limited. He is also an avid basketball fan and offered this analogy recently : "The aspect of the game I feel I'm groking well is the choice math & trying to dictate the gameplan. It isn't that different from basketball or bloodbowl in some ways. If you are fast/aggro, you want to force choices. Make the opponent commit to dealing with your decisions, then see if you can exploit what they've given up. If they have a long game, try to go under. Control seems like defense in a lot of ways. Keep the opponent from executing their game plan. Dictate tempo. Grind out wins. Obviously not a 1 to 1 comparison but there are applicable concepts.". Marshall, can we get some extended basketball strategy analogies for magic or limited from you?

Matt Henriksen

I know Luis especially is big into cooking, so have you ever tried kimchi in burgers or burritos? After cooking at an asian fusion place for a year I started experimenting with it and found it to be an all timer. One of those rare foods that has a strong, unique flavor that doesn't overwrite the rest of the dish . I guess this is more of a soapbox than a question, but some things are worth it.

Jonah Ahuvia

You both seem like very pleasant people. How do you both avoid getting annoyed in your dealings with other people?

Andrée

Hi gents. Wingspan mentor has always been good to me. I would place it as the best mentor. Why/how am I wrong? Also: Luis, can we please have an update on how your dnd game is going? Mojn from Denmark

Søren Lahn Sloth

Hey Luis and Marshall! When you first started playing Magic, what color were you immediately drawn to?

Michael J Gradassi

One more for Luis: Before getting your smoker did you try smoking on a 'normal' BBQ grill (e.g. with a foil pouch.) Can you recommend any good beginner smoking recipes?

Devon Biggerstaff

Hi from Australia. Any tips for drafting Modern cube specifically? I enjoy drafting Vintage, Legacy and Modern cubes on MTGO when they're around, but I find I do better in Vintage and Legacy, where I tend to 'pick the most powerful card' early in the draft, then focus on synergy after picking up a couple key cards for an archetype (e.g. if i get Natural Order and Rofellos early, lean towards mono-green.) When drafting Modern cube, I find the power level to be flatter and the decks more battlefield-based, less combo-y, and generally more midrange-y. I'm less able to discern the key cards for archetypes (or there are less key cards) and I often end up feeling out-midranged.

Devon Biggerstaff

Hi from Loveland, Colorado! What are the most important factors in a good Sealed Deck format? Thanks for making an awesome podcast every week, especially now.

Hi Marshall and Luis! Thanks for a great show. I have a question about innate skills and if you think that really good Magic players are born with certain traits or characteristics. I ask because while I love the game and have gotten better thanks to LR, I feel like I am just not cut out to be a really good Magic player - just an advanced beginner. Some innate Magic skills that I see include being good in math (that's not me); having a good memory (mine is terrible); being able to multitask (I'm a disaster at juggling lots of information or doing many things at once); and finally have spacial intelligence (nix that one, too). What I do have is the ability to self-scrutinize and learn from my mistakes - I never leave a draft blaming bad luck but rather look to see where I can improve. That's the best thing I have going for me, I guess. Oh, and I also love goblins and dragons. My question for you is: What other innate skills do you think make a good Magic player (maybe I have some of them and don't even know it!) and also what do you think a person can do to compensate who doesn't have some of the skills I mentioned, like spacial intelligence and a good memory? Thanks!

Michelle Valois

Do you fellas ever draft to play multiplayer with friends? I'll often get together with 4-6 friends for various gaming, and when someone has extra boosters we'll do a draft and then run one multiplayer game (sometimes teams, sometimes star-pattern-hunt) rather than play one-on-one matches. Be interested in how you'd approach such a draft.

Skip Franklin

What should your win percentage be at before attempting a magicfest?

Spencer St. James

I've found that I can get the hang of a cube and do pretty well after a few reps, but I've been struggling with cubes I have less experience with, especially the smaller cubes MTGO only has up for a week. Any suggestions on how to approach a newer cube that you might not know much about?

Nate Lewin

What type of smoker did LSV purchase, how has it been preforming, is he getting good EV out of it.

Kristjan Bullock

Do league drafts (especially bots, but human too) exacerbate the damage of broken archetypes like cycling? It's not 1-2 players with good versions of the deck in your pod you might get paired with, it's 500 of them in the winner's bracket of Arena/MTGO waiting for you.

David Clatterbuck

In an alternate world without Magic or Poker, what game is Luis a hall of famer of, and what game are you commentating Marshall?

Ryan

Ive been loving Ikoria limited with the very notable exception of the cycling deck, whats the best deck/strategy to beat cycling in Ikoria?

Max AR

From a game design perspective, I've always wondered how designers approach balancing a game's mechanics against 'feel bads.' For example, counter magic is an integral and essential mechanic to Magic, but can often be one of the most frustrating 'feel bads' when you're on the receiving end.

Brett

Would you rather have indestructible or flying in real life?

Mike Cammilleri

I feel like the past several formats have had a larger learning curve than previous formats. In other words, I lose lots early in the format (except pre-release for some reason), then I get back to my normal after a few weeks. Is there something to this, or is my recent foray into MTGO to blame (as opposed to the LGS)?

Ben Clifford

Been making breakfast burritos as per Luis’ suggestion and they’ve been amazing. My girlfriend wants me to make them with mango pico and sweet potato along with the classic ingredients. Is that crazy?

Jordan Selesnick

What is the worst limited deck you've ever built?

topaz1995

If you could Thanos snap one card out of the history of existence, which cards would it be?

Mike Cammilleri

Hi Marshal and Luis! I recently drafted a Lurrus cycling deck Zenith Flare, Five Flourishing Foxes, and 12+ 1-mana cyclers. It is probably the most powerful deck I have ever drafted outside of cube. Do you ever pay attention to when you end up in an all timer, A+ type deck and if so do any come to mind? Bonus Question: What Ikoria Card do you most want to see in vintage cube?

Keldan Campbell

Hey guys, I'm having trouble figuring out how to get in the cycling deck (besides opening Zenith Flare). The walkthrough draft was definitely helpful, but can you go over what signals to look for? Do you need to take payoffs first or do one-mana cyclers wheeling present enough signal for you to dive in? Thanks a bunch.

Jake

Hey Luis and Marshall, do you have some advice on how to draft Blue Green mutate? It’s my favourite archetype in Ikoria but I find myself losing pretty badly when I draft it.

Nicolas Maquet

Hey guys! Now that the dust has settled, how has your experience been with Lukka, Coppercoat Outcast and Narset of the Ancient Way? How highly are you picking them p1p1?

Jaeger

If you could tell yourself from 10 years ago one thing, what would it be?

NicolaiBolas

OK so this is pretty troll mode lol, but maybe at least show the questions to Luis? 1) Luis, as the vice president of marketing for ChannelFireball.com, have you calculated the return on advertising for CFB's sponsorship of the Limited Resources podcast? If so, how does it stack up. 2) Marshall, Oko, Thief of Crowns, was one of the most impactful cards in recent memory. It wasn't just a limited bomb, it was so strong it had to be banned from a different format every week for about month straight. Given that, are you willing to admit you were wrong about who is the greatest thief in the multiverse?

Ryan Glinski

What’s your favorite (paper) basic land?

Mike Cammilleri

What was your most embarrassing (public) play mistake of all time? Did you get tilted or hold it together???

Mike Cammilleri

What are you guys most looking forward to after quarantine is over?

Jackson McRae

How many players do you feel can force cycling and have all of them be solid decks? I seem to find that 3 players can be playing it and they all can have solid list. Does this scare you for the long term health of the format? Thanks as always!

David Bruno

I had the same experience. Between the many build-arounds and Companions this feels more like a Masters set than standard one.

Ferran Fons Titos

¡Hello Marshall and Luis! As you are both lovers of the cube, do you have any suggestions or tips when bulding one yourself? Also, what combination of creature types would you design for a monster in Ikoria?

Ferran Fons Titos

Is there a kind of non-card memorabilia that you are really into? If so, what’s the spiciest piece that you have in your collection?

Mike Cammilleri

What is a good way to approach side-boarding for games that you know will go long in draft? For example Lurrus vs. lurrus draft mirror. What is a way to play to this advantage.

Ryan F Stroud

Describe your ideal taco?

Daniel Schneider

Hey folks! When there is an Arena cube, which card would you have added that isn't already in the client? (Can be a pet card or just something you like to see in a cube pack) Cheers from Germany

Anthony Morgan

What habits have you formed during covid19 quarantine?

plato gonzales

When picking between two cards, how much better does the one have to be to leave ur current colors. I had someone pick a Rex over a whisperer even though whisperer would have followed their colors.

Alyssa blair

I’ve always thought being a celebrity could be awkward because there are people who know so much about you while they are complete strangers. Have either of you ever had any awkward encounters with fans?

Josh Valentine

Do you remember the tallest man you ever met?

Matt Jeziorski

Hey Marshall and Luis, brand new patron here. Just wanted to quickly say thank you for the hard work you guys put into your content. It has helped me become a much better player and your podcast is one of my favorite parts of the week. My question is this, I am a younger player and have only been playing since kaladesh. I would love to try my luck in higher level tournaments but I’m not very good at standard. What would you recommend I do in order to try and break out on to the competitive scene?

South

In playing Ikoria, I've been struck by the feeling that it's very "cube-like," and it made me think that WOTC took inspiration from popular cubes when designing this format. But I can't really articulate what makes something feel cube-like - is it complexity? power-level? replayability? (Despite the prominence of a few archetypes, I've found Ikoria to be extremely replayable with lots of interesting decisions in drafts and games, especially when the table knows how to draft it.) Has anybody else had this feeling? If so, can you better explain what makes a cube feel, well, cube-y?

Grayson

For Luis (since I know Marshall isn't actually a "gamer"): have you ever played "Slay the Spire" or other recent video games that incorporate M:tG-style deckbuilding mechanics into other game genres?

Colby Bogie

Hey Marshall & Luis: any predictions, wants, or spoilers you’re excited about with the new Core set? Personally I’ve loved the return of the core sets but I hope they don’t bring back the color protection and color hate like they did in m20. I’ve been playing since Revised and while I’m as nostalgic as anyone I believe the color protection should remain a relic of the past for gameplay reasons, especially in Limited. If I recall you felt the same way. Alternatively I enjoy “allied colors matter” cycles like Flinthoof Boar (insert Luis’ pig snort here), especially for introducing new players to the game. Thanks.

Will Neil

What are your thoughts about running more than 40 cards in a Keruga companion deck? My experience has been it's so easy to deck yourself.

Matt Jeziorski

Hi Marshall! Some of your best episodes have been full of magic related advice that is applicable to life as a whole, such as sometimes you do everything right and still don't get the results you want and it is important to recognize when that is and isn't the case. Have you considered doing a magic themed advice podcast? You could call it surveil the options.

Parker Rhodes

Have you found any unexpected benefits of the quarantine? (In regards to personal health, entertainment, or relationships)

Parker

Draft decks from 8-person pods are more powerful than from 6-person pods, which are in turn more powerful than sealed decks (even with twice as many packs). My question is, would bigger pods mean more powerful decks, or do diminishing returns kick in? Would there be a downside to nothing ever wheeling in a 14-person pod?

Robert Hanton

My biggest issue with ikoria is that I can't figure out where I'm supposed to be in a draft. I take a few mutate cards and suddenly every other card is mediocre cyclers. I take a cycling card and there are no payoffs but tons of monsters. How do you find your lane here?

Shivam Bhatt

Hi Marshall and Luis, I'm sure you're tired of talking about companions by now, but MaRo recently suggested that a rebalancing of the whole companion mechanic might be on the table. If you were to rewrite the CR text for the mechanic, what do you think would strike the best balance across limited and constructed formats? Edit: I see someone above me asked a similar question as I was typing. New question: if you were a planeswalker in lore, what type of creature would you want as a companion?

Spencer Warriner

Luis, teach us your smoking secrets! What kind of smoker do you have? What wood do you use? What's your cook temp? Favorite seasonings? All info is appreciated?

Matt Cromartie

Given that companions are a bit too pushed, perhaps, how far back would you pull them to be a good, fun, rare, given they're always in your hand, undiscardable, and an extra card?

William McDuff

Is there an existing ability or keyword that you think would be good in evergreen, or at least deciduous? Escape? Surveil?
