The ORAT Returneth

Hey All,

I mentioned a special guest on the show this week, and we have booked Hall of Famer and MPL member Owen Turtenwald for the show on Wednesday!

This gives you as patron the chance to ask one of the best players of his generation any question you want to. We'll get to as many as we can.

Post the comments in the comments below :)

Thank you as always!

Marshall

Hi guys, you know it's been a minute since Owen was on the show last and it's good to hear from him again. My question is, with Ryan having done a set review recently it makes me wonder - is there a chance we'll see another ORAT guest set review on some unknown date in the future?

James Gardiner

Hi guys! Love the show and have a question I've been eager to ask. How do you appraise the value of mill cards when you AREN'T playing a mill strategy? As an example, Wall of Lost Thoughts mills 4 cards. The info you gather by milling 4 cards has some non-zero value, right? And there's a non-zero percentage of milling a key card into the graveyard. For example, is it correct to think that Wall of Lost Thoughts has a 4/40 (10%) chance to put a player's bomb in the graveyard? (This could be a bad thing, of course, if the format has graveyard synergies such as Jump-Start.) I've been playing limited for many years now and I've always believed that mill is basically irrelevant unless the format has a viable mill archetype. Lately, however, I've started to reconsider this opinion. How do you all appraise mill effects on cards?

Hi Marshal, Luis and Owen. I just qualified for their first Pro-tour (Mythic Championship London), and I was wondering what to expect. In what ways does it differ from other large events, such as a GP?

Carter S.

Hi Marshal, Luis and also Owen. On the surface this will look like it's just for Marshall and Luis but the added bonus of Owen's perspective would be great... The set reviews are always a huge help to me since I don't get a ton of limited play with each set (especially this time of year). The one thing I run into every time is I seem to completely miss on a card evaluation. Usually one that I think is pretty good and you guys just blast it. This time it was Wilderness Reclamation. Before you call me a dummy, let me explain :) I do believe that in Gruul it's not good, but in Simic it seems perfect since Simic is so many hungry. Being able to tap out to get creatures, especially with adapt out, then getting that mana right back to keep answers open or threat of activation seems like a no brainer to me. What am I missing or am I just living in Magic fantasy Christmas land? I tend to do that when building for my other format EDH. Sorry if this is too long. Thanks for all you do!

For RNA, when should you take guildgates in draft, assuming you don't have nut payoffs like Gatebreaker Ram? I currently have them just below the best mono-colored commons (Chillbringer, Grotesque Demise) in pack 1, but it's hard to be confident in this placement.

Kelvin Chen

Hi Owen! Did you ever hit a particularly bad downswing in variance that affected your ability to stay positive and keep playing? How did you deal with that experience and stay motivated?

Parker

Hi, Owen, Marshall and LSV! I would like to ask whether you could confirm any improvements in Arena that you might've heard of during the Boot Camp you attended at Wizards. And, maybe most likely, could you please share how was that experience like? I think I saw on Twitter that you were drafting a lot with pros from all over the world. Finally, could you please share some insight about what kind of person Reid Duke is in real life? Thank you! And thanks to Marshall and LSV for all the effort you put in LR every week. It's the weekly highlight during my commutes to work. Greetings from Mexico!

Antonio Valdez

Hey Owen! I believe you once stated on stream that you like drafting on Arena more than drafting on Mtgo due to bots not moneydrafting rares. Do you still feel that way when there are ways to exploit the bots, for example the recent gate deck? Gl in the MPL!

Arjan Kooij

Hi Owen and Marshall, thank you for taking the time once again to provide great Limited content! We have specific guidelines, such as BREAD, pick orders, etc., when drafting. Sealed is understandably a different beast and often seems like the skill of a player weighs in more considering the variance of power that can make up a pool. Opening a unplayable rare, such as Font of Agonies, significantly puts one at a disadvantage for instance. Do either of you have an approach that uses guidelines specific to Sealed that allows you to maximize the available quality of your given pool? Do you believe that every pool has the ability to perform with a positive EV / win rate? Any other Sealed advice would also be appreciated. Thank you for your time and help!

What is your favorite magic memory? What do you do outside of magic for fun?

Jen P

I really enjoyed watching Owen win GP Houston with 4 Color Rally. Any fun stories or memories you can share about that event or playing with that deck?

Jonathan Montgomery

Hi Owen and Marshall - something of a personal question for both of you. The Magic pro scene - and coverage of it - has changed dramatically and seemingly will continue to change. Yet you both have made careers in this game. Does the potential for change outside your control create stress? Does it make long-term planning difficult? If so, how do you deal with it? For me, and I imagine many other listeners, the struggle to find security inside changing industries is something to which we relate. Any thoughts appreciated.

Jonathan Montgomery

Hey Owen, what are your thoughts about the trade off between power and power when it comes to drafting? Do you try to find edges with powerful yet situational cards like main deck plummet, or do you try to make sure every card in your deck helps in any situation?

Alex Middeleer

Hi, Owen and Marshal, what are your thoughts on the recent announcements regarding the Mythic Championship in March? personally, I love that they are giving Arena players a chance to go but I don't like that the format is something we've never seen before and isn't really like any other. Thanks for your time

Zackery Trapp

Hi Owen! Marshal and Luis often talk about how win rate isn't a great measure of skill in a high variance game like Magic. When you have a run of loses (assuming such a thing ever happens) what tools do you use to evaluate whether it is simply variance or if you need to re-evalute some aspect of the format?

james anderson

Hey Owen! Do you think being a part of the MPL will alter the amount of fun you have playing Magic? I know you’ve been a highly successful pro for a very long time. Regardless, I wonder if this shift in paradigm to Magic being a legitimately salaried, full time job will change the amount of fun you have playing. Thanks for being on the show this week, I always enjoy when you guest.

Alec Lancaster

Hey Owen! Congrats on MPL and welcom to the show! My question for you is: what is the most efficient/best card in ravnica allegiance? My question for the hosts is: who does the LR theme song? Love the show!

The Pabster

Hey Owen, congratulations on the MPL! I was hoping to get your perspective on MPL as it relates to having a pro salary for the first time. It's been well-known that even platinum pros couldn't always rely on tournament results for their income. For every "Luis makes 3 top 8's in a row", there's a "Lui didn't make day 2 3 times in a row", and having your financial security rely on a mulligan to 5 is very stressful. Content production has been the "stable" income of most pros, and I know players of MPL caliber find a way to make it work. How different is it, now that you have a year of a solid reliable income? Is it easier to dive into being the best when you don't have looming financial uncertainty, or am i overestimating how tough it is to make ends meet in magic? Or maybe it's tough for other players but you are so dang good that you made plenty off winnings no matter the year? Thanks, and congratulations again! Give 'em been in the invitational!

How often do you read the rules text on cards? After seeing all the spoilers and attending prereleases I pretty much know what all the cards do so when drafting and playing I just pay attention to the name and art and have in my mind what all the text below is. When is it useful to make a conscious effort to read the rules text to make sure you’re not missing anything by making assumptions what a card actually does?

Brandon Housman

As a more general question, what are your guys’ favorite planeswalker cards to play? Can be limited, constructed, maybe something that won you an important game!

Star Bright

Hi Marshall and ORAT- Longtime LR listener and longtime Owen fan here. My question for the ORAT: How has becoming a part of the MPL changed how information is shared about new Limited formats? Does having a contract to stream mean your discovery of the format is on display now for all to see vs. behind-closed-doors practice with (for instance) CFB and PGO teams? How do you feel about the heightened visibility?

Jarred Juett

Hello Owen, Marshall, and Luis! I'm fairly new to Magic and I'm having a difficult time seeing the big picture when I draft. It's hard for me to not draft a "Good Stuff" deck, which always seems okay when I draft it, but during matches I tend to start off well and then stall out and lose the long game. Any tips or pointers?

Chris Norton

I have been drafting RNA, about 4 drafts so far, and have been having trouble with wins due to bad luck with mana. For the casual drafter who can't smooth over that bad luck with a larger sample size, how can I assess whether I drafted a good deck if I can only do a few drafts and consistently go 0-3 or 1-2 with them due to a bad draw? I feel like I haven't made any progress "cracking" the set because I'm too busy hoping I draw my 3rd or 4th land to figure out the power level of cards or guilds.

Drew Acquaviva

Hey Owen, question: In the past, you’ve referenced how much you like Sealed. What’s an actionable piece of advice you have for getting better at Sealed?

Nicholas Frega

Hi Marshall and Owen! question to both: favorite holiday destination?

Janusz Okoń

Hi, Marshall and Owen, I have a question: how can I draft control better? I'm fine playing anything, even super-control decks like Dimir. So, in sealed, I can play whatever the pool presents and achieve satisfactory results. However, when it comes to drafting, I can only wrap my head around drafting aggro, and fail miserably pretty much every time I try to draft control. I often find myself getting run over by aggro decks and losing the long game against other control decks. Maybe I'm not prioritizing correctly during draft, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Atipong Pathanasethpong

Hey Owen! As a professional Magic player who spends his time playing a ton of competitive magic, when (if ever) do you have the time to enjoy the more casual sides of the game? Do you play commander or any form of kitchen table with a certain friend group??

Thomas Bang

(side note, if this is too silly or doesn't match the theme of the show, I won't be upset if you skip it) Hi Marshall, Luis, and Owen! The question "What are your favorite draft sets of all time?" is SO 2018. Here's a contest: Snake draft 3-set "teams" of formats from all of the limited sets ever printed. Viewers get to vote (maybe on Twitter or the subreddit) to decide which team is their favorite. P.S. I'm glad Luis enjoyed his OJ!
