Question of the Week Thread Refresh!

Hey All,

We aren't quite at the Q&A show time yet (those get their on posts) but this is where you can put more general questions for consideration for the Patreon Question of the Week on the show.  Go ahead and fire any questions you have in the comments on this post!

As always, THANK YOU!

Hey folx! My question is about the effect of dedicated booster pack slots like the snow lands in Kaldheim on draft signals. I know that in general the early signals you pass to the left aren’t as important as the ones you get from the right, and I’ve had to teach myself that I should usually just take the best card early even if the next best card is in the same color or archetype. I have an intuition though that that calculus is pretty different when we’re talking about something like taking an early snow land: the person to your left usually only knows the rarity of the missing cards so they should know that the best common and a good rare could easily have been the same color, but they can see specifically that a snow land (which likely fits best in one of just a few archetypes) is missing. I find myself wanting to take advantage of that specificity of information to plant a clear flag in a way that goes beyond the actual added power I hope the snow lands will provide as enablers, and also I tend to take their repeated absence early as a very strong signal so I expect the people to my left to do so as well. I’m wondering how significant this factor is for you and how you balance it with the heuristic of focusing on the signals you’re receiving rather than sending. How much of picking an early snow land is about taking enablers before taking payoffs and how much is about the very specific signal it sends? If the snow lands were all just commons mixed in with the rest (but appeared no less often on average), how if at all would that affect how highly you draft them, and what lessons might we take from that that would apply to dedicated booster slots more generally? Thanks!

Hello LR Crew! I've been drafting a lot of aggro decks in Kaldheim, and one of the biggest problems I'm having is playing around the prevalence of some pretty good sweepers in Doomskar and Blood On the Snow. On one hand, my plan with these decks is to curve out with cheap creatures and kill my opponent before they can draw or play their threats (whether that's right or wrong may be another question). On the other hand, I get apprehensive about dumping out my whole hand, only to get swept and subsequently overwhelmed by card advantage. Of course, the obvious tell is to look at the colors of mana they have in play, but what are some other considerations that an aggro deck should take in a set with good sweepers? Love the show, thank you guys! Clay

In preparation for maybe paper maigc being able to resume this autumn, what do you think about wanting to make a photo of a specific gamestate? There are 2 scenarios I might be tempted to do it: When I got a really difficult attack decision or when I or my opponent just went of really well. I usually take screenshots of those scenarios in online play, but that is definitely less obnoxious, because your opponent does not even notice, then taking a photograph.

Hi Marshall and Luis. Big fan of the podcast and I've been enjoying your streams the last couple of weeks. I've found that my win percentage seems to take a dive whenever there is something at stake. Even if the stakes are extremely small. Are there any tips to stay focused and on top of your game even in high stakes matches? Thanks for all the great content. Matthias

Today on the lrcast subreddit there was a fairly contentious argument about the ethics of "gg" from a winning position on arena. Can we get an official ruling? Always BM or OK for the lolz when your meme deck goes off?

Joel Barnes

One thing I've noticed I tend to do is draft for the "deck/archetype" instead of the looking at the cards in front of me. For instance I went 0-3 with what felt like a pretty good B/W play 2 spells deck, but I didn't have some key pieces (mainly neither Firja or the 1/1 that gets 2 counters). I notice LSV in his draft videos does a good job of making picks with X card is good with Y and/or Z card so it goes up for me. How do you get into that mindset more?

Matthew Hogg

You've mentioned 17lands.com a few times. Are there other Arena add-ons that you've tried, and what do you like or dislike?

Mark Ball

Hey guys. I recently stopped playing zendicar rising and am trying to get back into kaldhelm. I know this sets hard but I seem to be making common mistakes as if I was playing again for the first time. I know Luis took some years off and I was wondering what are some good tips to get back into magic faster. I'm really struggeling on basic things like board stalls and things like that!

In Sealed I struggle with knowing whether to stretch the mana to include as many powerful cards in different colors as I can or whether to try to make the deck faster and more consistent at the expense of its late game potential. How do I get better at this?

Grant Armstrong

What type of card that is usually unplayable (like "Fog" effects) would you like to see receive a power level boost to make a playable variation? Conversely, what card effect do you wish Wizards would power down in the future?

Nathan Moore

Hi Marshall and Luis. Long time patron and fan of the show. When drafting snow in Kaldheim, deep in pack 2 do you take the first glittering frost over a red/green snow land (on colors)? Basically, how do you compare glittering frost to snow lands? Thanks!

Alan McLucas

what would be your Top 10 "mythic" uncommons of all time? Thanks again for your amazing content.

David Bruno

What is the 2nd best format? (draft is the best, obv)

Ben Clifford

Thanks for taking these, as always. If your opening hand has two lands, a 2-drop, and any land off the top can cast the rest of your spells, do you keep it? On the play, you have a 90.4% chance of drawing a third land by turn 4. Is 9.6% odds of missing your third and fourth land drop and 5.7% to miss your fifth too risky? How does that hit to your win rate compare to your first mulligan?

Harry

Let’s say you could go back in time to “fix” Kaldheim limited. What would you change?

Dnd Northwest

Hi Marshall and Luis! I was wondering how you come up with such interesting topics every week. Are there any brainstorming techniques or creative processes that you use? After the Set Reviews and Initial Format Impressions episodes it really seems like the Wild West when it comes to topics, and the fact that you always seem to have something new and innovative to discuss is appreciated. Thanks for all that you do!

What makes a good Sealed Deck format? What are your favorites?

Much talk about how complex Kaldheim is when looking to amount of mechanics and card text but so far it seems to be seeing a good amount of success. Do you think this might be a sign of times to come and set complexity will trend up?

Matheus de Almeida

Hey guys, thanks for being awesome. I was wondering how you guys feel about the increased complexity of this latest set and whether it is healthy for magic as a whole. It seems like the amount of text on cards - even on commons - has been increasing steadily for the last few sets. I personally like it but it’s been a turn off for some of my friends and family who are more casual players. Is this a good direction for Magic to head in?

Timothy Papich

Hey guys! Now that Constructed Resources has taken its place at the top of the “Resources” podcast pantheon, have you considered trying to capitalize on its success? Maybe changing the name of LR to “Constricted Resources” to get some of that sweet sweet CR listener base? -David

The Memory Jar Podcast

Hey Marshall and Luis! I thoroughly enjoyed watching Luis' morale-crushing power play of discarding three Svellas to hand size in a recent draft video, and was wondering if either of you have any more stories involving such brazen displays of dominance?

Misha Colbourne

You're at a Sealed GP. You open your pool and find you've got a very solid GB pool, but not enough cards to make a deck, even if you throw in the chaff and the artifacts. However, you have enough cards to make a UR deck, though the card quality is noticeably lower. What's the proper choice going forward? What should we use to steer ourselves down the right path?

Spencer St. James

Hi guys, Which fraction of a full card is the value of seeing the opponent's hand in your mind, i.e. the card ? (e.g. on Duress, Divest or Loki ) I am aware of how bad it is to miss with Divest or Duress, but that specific aspect is rarely discussed. I am not sure it changes that much of what I do, but I do take into account, what they have und so sometimes force them to waste mana or play a removal on a worse creature for example and it usually feels much better and let's me play with more confidence and respect their game plan. Is it maybe more valuable for a less skilled player like me lacking the "spidey senses" that you own? Loved the recent episodes! Peter

Peter Sievert

I am wondering if we can have an update on your mental health during the pandemic Marshall? I think it was really good when you both talked about how therapy is like excercise for the brain

Andrée

Hey guys, I have my first ever paper draft tomorrow at my LGS, so I'm pretty excited! My question is, what kinds of cards (or decks) give you the most opportunity to outplay your opponents? And are there any cards that go up in value at higher ranks of play? Thanks for the weekly content, I’m keen to see how well I can do at tomorrows draft using everything I’ve learnt here!

wyn russell

Hey, I'm a returning player. I last played around Battle for Zendikar and (unintentionally) started playing again during the last set, Zendikar Rising. I've been struggling with draft since returning, often getting between 1 and 4 wins in Premier draft. What are the biggest changes in the last 5 years to draft and how should I be adjusting? I feel like I value removal too highly and don't value the 1 drops enough in modern Magic.

Neil Logan

Hey guys! If you were to build your own cube, would themes would you like it to have and what would you avoid? Thanks so much for all you do! Ps - LSV, if you could say “Westin is a better magic player than Ryan”, it would make my day ;) Westin Whitlock
