The bad parts about this ARE really sad. I loved getting to watch the Mythic Championship from home during the winter. It brought excitement to an otherwise pretty dull time. Pro magic is also a goal as you said, something to aspire too. Outside of pro magic, where does that leave people who are aspiring to get into Magic as a career? Not necessarily pro level play, but also commentators, judges, high level content creators, and such. As Jimmy Wong said on a recent episode of Game Knights, “he [Marshall] just has one of those silky, buttery smooth voices…” (in reference to the College videos). I really hope we don’t lose you as a commentator, Marshall, I think Wizards would be doing a major disservice to the community to not have you as a front face.
To your point about why this is good, however, it does feel like a path will open up for players like me. Throughout the pandemic, Ive been grinding Arena, hitting diamond/mythic in Limited (thanks to you two) pretty consistently. I’ve really felt like I’ve been growing as a player, but haven’t seen many avenues to jump into pro-level Magic. This does feel like a potential opportunity for me to dip my feet in the big pool, as it were. The Arena Opens are fun, but I don’t know how much I can equate those to high level play. In terms of what the highest play is, I wonder if this new system will move away from Standard only. I know towards the end of sets, especially with how often we have access to them via Arena, Standard can feel stale - and feels stale much faster than pre-Arena times. Particularly, I know that even those who qualify for the Championships via Arena through Limited still have to play Standard (which, again, no thank you) - and I’m hoping that the new system incorporates Limited (Draft/Sealed) and (maybe!?) Commander for whatever the competitive scene looks like in 2023. This was probably a really rough blow to read in your inbox the other day. I support and appreciate both of you so much, hoping you get some clarity for the future soon. Much love.
