Limited Resources 559 – Genius or Grifter Part II

Comments

Long time listener and teacher. Haven't missed an episode since sometime in the middle of the Loucks days. Love you guys and thank you for keeping this going through Covid times. I want to respond to the genius or grifter about the teacher and student from Australia. I know this isn't a QOTW, but maybe it would do as a replacement because I think this has pretty big implications around teaching and race. Anyway, this situation is most definitely genius on the part of the kid! First, if the teacher falls for this, that's on them and pretty hilarious. No offense to person who submitted that other question, but come on, do a little Googling!  Just cause you want to honor the kids culture, which is great, doesn't mean you can't challenge them. I hope they were able to laugh it off at the end. It's a pretty good prank! Second, and this is most important, to LSV's point that this will make it harder for the teacher to trust future interactions. I'm not sure if you meant with that kid or other students, but either way, it is not the student's job to help the teacher build trust, certainly not other aboriginal students. Kids make up crap all the time, that's just what they do. In fact, there is pretty high likelihood that this kid is doing this because they LIKE that teacher. Finally, the underlying piece here that made me want to write in is that there is a power dynamic between what I assume from the story is a white teacher and a student of color. That kid is probably testing his teacher's whiteness. This is a student of color with a white teacher in the position of power in the room. this kid is using what power he has to get some attention and a good laugh. Therefore, the kid is a genius.
