Q&A Episode Questions Needed!

The guys are doing the Q&A episode TODAY! Throw any questions you have about anything, Magic, life, personal stuff, whatever you want to ask fire it away!

This doesn’t directly answer your question, but I can recommend the Thinking Poker podcast. Their Patreon includes 3-5 daily strategy episodes, while the main (free) podcast is mostly interviews with people in the poker world, but also includes some strategy. The main host, Andrew Brokos, also has several poker books, two of which are named Play Optimal Poker, which discuss game theory approaches to the game. Anyway, I stopped playing poker when the pandemic began, but have somewhat kept up with this show, and I found that it was a good immersive experience to adjust how I think about hands and betting. My guess is it probably wouldn’t take long before you start picking up on some things that hadn’t occurred to you before.

Hi y'all. On multiple drafts now I've looked back and thought I was supposed to be in UW artifacts and just plain missed my lane. Do you all have any advice on what cards/picks initially signal that it's open and what to prioritize from there? Thanks very much.

Ryan Glinski

You get an angry letter from a laywer that demands that you change the name of Limited Resources to something else. After you read this question, what is the first new name that comes to mind for each of you?

Andrée

Hey Marshall and LSV! Thank you so much for having Ben back on the show! It had been way too long, hope he can come back soon! In light of last week's episode, have you guys been drafting blue the way he suggested, if so, how is it going?

Jeremy Church

Hey guys! I have a few sealed RCQs coming up and I was wondering, how does sealed change your rating of cards/archetypes as compared to draft? Are there certain cards/types of cards that are better in sealed than they are in draft?

Kelsey Ito

Hello! You've mentioned how you use intuition to evaluate cards and how you use statistics (eg: 17lands.com) to check your intuition. If the two are largely different then you can play test with the card and update your understanding or analyze why the data might be misleading. My question is: How else does one efficiently tune their intuition to evaluate cards throughout a set? It obviously comes with time, but what specific things do you do to develop your intuition and get better at evaluating cards?

Any good resources for a magic player trying to up his game at poker (Texas hold ‘em)? I used to play before I started magic (10 years ago) and now realize I can probably apply a lot of what I’ve learned with Magic to poker. What areas should I focus on to gain the largest win percentage? Some friends started playing and invited me to their monthly game, and there’s a couple of sharks I’d like to not take advantage of me.

Hey Marshall and Luis! I like to play Flashback Drafts on MTGO, and it is easy to see that card quality is much lower in older sets, especially for the worst commons. Instead of mediocre creatures or clunky removal spells, there are straight up unplayable cards that do basically nothing. I was wondering if you think the increased playability of the worst cards in a set fundamentally shifts draft strategy. Drafting old sets it feels like I simultaneously get more punished for staying open a long time (as I don't get bailed out with random playables late in packs) and punished if I committed to a color pair too early (because if it wasn't open I would struggle to make playables too). Overall, it felt more skill testing to me (which I view as a good thing), but since I only have a tiny sample size I am really curious to hear your thoughts! Obviously, Wizards isn't going to go back to making a bunch of unplayable cards (which seems suboptimal on every level), so do you think there is a different way to make the draft portion more rewarding for good drafters? My initial thought was that having a 12 or 13 card booster pack would have a similar effect to including a couple unplayable cards, but that feels pretty un-marketable in the context of actually selling those packs. Thanks again for making such an awesome show every week!

With the loss of trust created from the D&D ogl fiasco, do you think that has any spillover impact to the Magic community? As a player of both, I can tell you I am second guessing my magic purchases. Luis as a player, has the OGL stuff influenced how you feel about D&D? Thanks for all you both do for our community.

How do you think about sequencing your play when your opening hand contains a tap land such as a Sphere land? For example, it contains 1-drop, 2-drop, 3-drop, 2 basic lands, and a tap land? Do you have some heuristics you use, or does it mainly depend on exactly what the cards do?

Michael Rawdon

Hey guys. What is your favorite card/mechanic/strategy/combo (dealer's choice) that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt is bad, but you love it anyway? The worse the choice, the better the answer. Thanks!

Fizzerdrix

Luis mentioned in a recent sign off that he didn't want to get into the whole issue of the multiple versions of rares and mythics from recent sets. Well, I'd love to hear both of your opinions, what do you really think?

Chris Fisher

Do you consider LRs impact on the format as far as good/bad archetypes. ex: Saying BG counters wasn't great in Zendikar allowed for those drafters to get more premium cards for that deck. Saying Gates was great in Ravnica Allegiance reduced the chance of a premium deck.

Dan McKinney

Marshall - with the wildfire success of Wristwatch Revival, when can we expect to see you as an expert on Antiques Roadshow?

Brett

Hi Marshall, Hi Luis A quick one! What is your favourite magic colour? And what is your favourite colour pair? I really enjoy playing red for the burn spells, I'm always attracted to these type cards in every draft format. My colour pair would be boros as I love curving out with creatures, attacking and burning face to finish them off. Have a good day! Luigi

Luis Acosta

I've heard ONE described as archetype is more important than color. How do you evaluate a new format (MOM for example) with regards to how important playing within a specific archetype is versus picking cards in your color that are just value cards (value from a gameplay point of view, not financial)?

Swordsman

Hey Marshall and Luis! Do you have a favorite mechanic of all time in draft? I was a big fan of populate back in Return to Ravnica even though I don't think it was super powerful. Thanks for all the content you produce, it's really helped me get better at limited!

Daniel

What is the best way to evaluate the speed of a format? BRO and ONE have both felt like you need to impact the board or have good defensive speed. How does one step back and look and evaluate what the speed of any format so one can draft and build a deck appropriately?

Ryan F Stroud

How do you guys pivot a hyper critical, strategic mind, toward personal relationships? Conversations like the one you had with Ben S were enthralling for many of us but other types of people would find them very confrontational and uncomfortable. Have you ever had problems having relationships with people who are more 'feelers' than 'thinkers'? How do you do it? Sorry if this is a left field question!

Alexander Pacheco

Louis, when you inevitably win a world championship, what sort of card would you like made in your likeness?

Matthew Sperling
