J's Revue Starlight Movie... Review + Movie Link

All right. So I decided to put my thoughts into a video because it felt necessary to do so. I would prefer if you'd watch this before watching my reaction... unless you like surprises, then by all means watch my reaction first ;p

J's Revue Starlight Movie... Review + Movie Link

It's all good! I'm sorry that I didn't like it either xD I don't have any issue with having a high score. I don't think it's objectively a bad movie. The problem was, things happened that made me no longer view it objectively, which is something I've always thought that I was very good at doing. But it wasn't the case for this movie. It happens! And yes, we had very different translations. Mine was something along the lines of "Defeating a Fake God with a Fake Arrow" and that's about as blatant as it can get. That really bothered me and then the second button of Claudine's sent me over the edge! Oh yeah, I did get up a second time. Partly in frustration, and partly because my cat wanted to get fed. Totally understandable that you don't want to watch it. I'm not expecting anyone to watch it honestly, considering how much I hated on it. Hence the follow-up review video. Hah! I did my best to respond to your wall of texts :p I honestly think this is a better place than Youtube for them, because over there I fall very far behind responding. I'm excited for more Yamato too!

Darn. Sorry you didn't like the movie! :( As you'd probably except, I'm one of the ones who did give it a 10. And I stand by that score. I enjoyed all the normal, base-level anime stuff. Character design. Animation. Music. Etc. Then, to me, there was a ton of really cool stuff going on in all the Revues. Some interesting twists on characters' motivations and some key lines repeated from the series but with changed meanings or new importance. And the Symbolism. Layers. All the stuff I normally talked about in depth. Stuff that said to me that the writers were paying attention to what had come before and were continuing those various things or playing off them for contrast. If you ever want to read about all the nitty gritty stuff from someone who did enjoy it, skip to the end of my review to the expandable Dig Deeper section. https://ragashingo.com/gekijouban-shoujo-kageki-revue-starlight-movie-review/ I especially enjoyed the things going on back and forth with Junna and Banana during their "Revue of Hunting." But, I totally understand if you don't feel like going back through something you didn't enjoy. Totally not my intent to force it on you or guilt you into it! Differences of opinion aside, I do agree with you on a few points: - The Karen / Hikari backstory is long. That, and... so much of it is in the front half of the movie where it delays getting to the Revues. We probably disagree on how much should be cut as I think more of it is important, but it could also be distributed a bit better. Most of the Revues are back to back to back in the 2nd half, but maybe they could have been broken up with that backstory for better overall weighting and flow. - Claudine not losing when her button was cut off. It's a moment I don't understand, either. She's playing the role of a charlatan and trickster and, you know, an agent of supernatural temptation like in old folk stories. But how that translates to not losing? Yeah. I don't get it, either. Perhaps there is some cultural or translation issue there clouding things. That Revue, in particular, has a lot of Japanese-language specific wordplay, like how some of the titles and song lyrics revolve about the term "Kuro", which is Japanese for the color black, but which is also Claudine's shortened Japanese nickname, so it's totally possible the button thing is confusing along those lines. One thing I didn't at all understand from this mini-review of yours was the part about the titles giving away the outcome of Maya and Claudine's Revue. The overall Revue is "The Review of Souls". And the four parts are "Prologue", "The Black Tragedy Or, the Colorless Desire of the Stage Person", "Like an Awry Arrow Revealing the Imitation of God", and "We, Together,". None of those jump out to me as spoilers of what was going to happen, so I'm wondering if your translation was different or if you were just already unhappy and one of those jumped out at you differently? Last disagreement: I was super disappointed to hear that you got up during the reaction. Heard about it in this video. Found it very quickly in the reaction video. I totally understand why you did it, but... in a similar way to how you were done caring about the movie, it starts me at not caring about the reaction. So, I will not be watching it. That said, I hate ending on a negative. Thank you so much for reacting to the Revue Starlight series and movie! And thanks for reading and responding to my deep dives of the episodes! I had a lot of fun revisiting the series with you! We didn't see eye to eye here, but I'm sure as heck excited for more Space Battleship Yamato 2199 reactions! :) P.S. I think YouTube ate this reply, so I'm also putting it here.
