Q&A Questions for Today's Show!
Added 2022-07-27 17:55:31 +0000 UTCLuis and I are doing a Q&A on today's show and if you've ever had a question burning away in your heart to ask them, today is a good day to ask! You can ask about any topic that comes to your mind, Magic, sports, cooking, real life, content creation watches, anything!
Thank you as always!

Kinda real question today! Top 5 Mythic Commons? Lots of talk of inspiring overseer and that may just be #1 overall. But I am curious where other big hitters like Organ Hoarder, Imperial Oath, Saruf’s Packmate, Venomous Hierophant and others go.

2022-07-28 16:04:22 +0000 UTCI got back into magic via Arena during the pandemic and the show was something that quickly became part of the routine that helped me get through those dark days in isolation so wanted to say a quick thanks to you both. I first played when I was younger, it was easy to spend countless hours in game stores and go to all the local events or even travel to some tournaments with the other kids in my local scene. Now i'm old, have a full time job, live with a significant other, have lots of family commitments and don't have any friends who play the game. I'm not quite sure how to approach the return of paper magic as a lone wolf so to speak, how would you handle if you were in my shoes? I'm not quite sure where to start or if I even should and just keep doing my thing in digital when I have the time. Either way looking forward to the return of the high level paper events, I love following coverage of the PT.

2022-07-28 14:01:13 +0000 UTCMy impression is that MTG has been centered on creatures and combat for a while. Assume there was a set that was weighted to favor instants and sorceries over creatures (perhaps by making the spells cheap/powerful and the creatures expensive or weak) - would that be fun to play? Why do you think creatures have become the main part of the game (at least for limited)?

2022-07-28 11:13:52 +0000 UTCI wanted to ask about Quick Draft on Arena. My daughters somehow know when I’m drafting, and decide that -that- is the appropriate time to spill something or fight over a toy. I feel like I’m stuck between drafting with bots or having a bot draft for me. I feel like the bots have gotten better since Merfolk Secretkeeper Tribal in Eldraine, but I would love to hear your take and your tips on this limited format. Thanks for being awesome!

2022-07-28 07:27:24 +0000 UTCHi Marshall and Luis! What do you do when the first few boosters in a draft don't have good cards? Do you just pick the best that is there, or try to get into the best colors, or something else? Thanks for the great content.

2022-07-28 07:04:54 +0000 UTCHey Marshall and Luis! My girl and I have somewhat recently been getting into bridge, and I wonder if you guys play a lot of card games featuring the basic 52 card deck besides poker?

2022-07-27 23:40:52 +0000 UTCIt seems like WOTC is going to continue with crossovers for the foreseeable future. What are some properties you would like to see featured in a magic set similar to DND? BTW, been listening since John Loucks first started on the show. Even when I took breaks from Magic, I continued listening to the show. LR is one of the biggest reasons for leveling up my limited game. Thanks and keep up the amazing work!

2022-07-27 21:16:48 +0000 UTCAre you guys into board games? What are some of your favorites or recently played games?

2022-07-27 20:53:52 +0000 UTCHi Marshall, are you planning to go to the MTGSummit in November? I have only played in FNM events a one GP 8 years ago. I did enjoy the large event experience and want to hear your thoughts on this upcoming event. Much love, Joe.

2022-07-27 20:50:28 +0000 UTCWotC has stated that commander is the most popular way to play Magic. However it seems like professional level players like you, our esteemed podcast hosts, in general do not enjoy the format. Do you have any guess as to why commander's popularity does not extend to these higher level players?

2022-07-27 20:26:07 +0000 UTCHi Marshall and Luis, I was wondering if you’d consider doing an episode with some attacking and blocking heuristics. Although I adore magic, I’m quite bad at maths and would love some easy to remember rules I can apply for blocking particularly. Thanks for making the show I look forward to each week. You’re both very classy gentlemen xx Best wishes, Jasmine

2022-07-27 20:04:14 +0000 UTCHey guys! This question is for Luis. My wife and I just welcomed our first-born into the world last week. It’s been an absolute exhausting blast so far. Much like you, I already find myself BUSY, juggling freelance writing, bartending, playing music, hosting home cube tournaments… the list goes on! What advice would you give for juggling parenthood with the pursuit of other endeavors, Magic included? Thank you both for the years of wisdom and entertainment!

2022-07-27 19:39:38 +0000 UTCI'm starting a new job next week after having worked at the same company for 14 years. I'm excited for the new opportunity but sad to say goodbye to people I've known for a long time. Do either of you have advice about how to stay in touch with people that you worked with or were close to in the past? This is something I've always found to be difficult.

2022-07-27 19:27:42 +0000 UTC2 questions. 1.) If there was one thing you could change about Streets limited, what would it be? For me, just better balance of rarity. 2.) Where would you rank Neon Dynasty when it comes to draft balance? I feel Neon Dynasty has alot of long term replay value and I would rank it as the best limited set since Khans, but thats just me personally. Anyways, thanks as always.

2022-07-27 19:19:09 +0000 UTCHi Marshal and Luis. If you were in charge of the balance team and could give 2 cards Alchemy changes in HBG to improve the format, what would they be, and how would you change them?

2022-07-27 18:58:15 +0000 UTCHi Marshall and Luis! What do you hope Magic looks like in five years time? I use the word hope because as the last few years have taught us, who knows what the future will bring, but I'd love to hear what you both hope for: in terms of competitive play, the design philosophy of limited formats and the evolution of digital magic. (long time listener, first time questioner, keep up the awesome content and thank you for all you do)

2022-07-27 18:51:25 +0000 UTCHey Marshall and Luis! I recently played some Rise of the Eldrazi Flashback Drafts on MTGO, and it quickly became apparent that the card quality is much lower than in sets from recent years, especially for the worst commons. Instead of mediocre creatures or clunky removal spells there are straight up unplayable cards that do basically nothing. Contrasted with that, Midnight Hunt recently returned to MTG Arena, and in that set it feels like even if multiple players are drafting Blue Black, I can still end up with a functional Blue Black deck, where my worst common is something like Bat Whisperer (a 4 mana 4/2 with upside). I was wondering if you think the increased playability of the worst cards in a set fundamentally shifts draft strategy. Drafting the old set it felt like I got simultaneously more punished for staying open a long time (as I wouldn't get bailed out with random playables late in packs) and punished if I committed to a color pair too early (because if it wasn't open I would struggle to make playables too). Overall, it felt more skill testing to me (which I view as a good thing), but since I only have a tiny sample size I am really curious to hear your thoughts! Obviously, Wizards isn't going to go back to making a bunch of unplayable cards, so do you think there is a different way to make the draft portion more rewarding for good drafters? My initial thought was that having a 12 or 13 card booster pack would have a similar effect to including a couple unplayable cards, but that feels pretty un-marketable in the context of actually selling those packs. Thanks again for making such an awesome show every week!

2022-07-27 18:42:20 +0000 UTCAnother Q & A episode!!?? Yeah! Okay, so I've been thinking that the next question I want to ask you guys is what are some of your favorite decks and archetypes you have ever drafted and what did you enjoyabout them? I know Marshall you have talked about your Venser + Man O' War deck and LSV had that super cool storm + Reanimator cube deck...but there has to be more that stick out in your minds! Here's a few of mine: The green black escape deck from Theros Beyond Death because was a unique strategy that allowed for some unconventional deck building. Blue white blink from MH1 was super fun! A sweet tempo deck that combined solid etb effects with Soulheder, one of the best payoffs ever. Five color snow...because popping off Path to the World Tree is amazing! And I also want to include black red aggro from Throne of Eldraine. I think it has been the best non sacrifice deck in those colors that I have played. Thank you guys (including Jeff of course!)once again for all your hard work in making this amazing show! I hope you are all having a great summer.

2022-07-27 18:38:14 +0000 UTCHey! Thank you both so much for all your work! Do you ever play in any of the random Arena events, like the drafts where you get to play the first card for free every turn or every spell has cascade etc?
The Lorne
2022-07-27 18:33:04 +0000 UTCHi Marshall and Luis! Do you guys do much chaos drafting? Any general heuristics you apply to when doing so? Given the randomness of the card pool, do you have any tips on how you discern the open color/archetype? Do you value certain things like fixing or removal higher than an average draft or are you more focused on just a good curve with CABS-y stuff? Thanks as always for everything you do for the community; limited magic wouldn't be what it is without you. :)

2022-07-27 18:24:04 +0000 UTCCan you give some general advice on how to draft a "build around" deck without creating a glass cannon that falls apart when you don't see your key card?

2022-07-27 18:18:21 +0000 UTCHi Marshall and LSV, I’ve been really enjoying Pai Gow as a way to get extra value from loose packs. Do you have any strategy advice for making piles and which sets do you like best for Pai Gow? Thanks for all the great content!

2022-07-27 18:17:45 +0000 UTCDo you ever suffer from optimization fatigue? I find myself trying to min/max everything from the path I mow my lawn to gold farming in Arena. The problem is I am usually optimizing for one thing to make the calculation manageable (time, gold, money), at the expense of harder to calculate concepts like fun. Any tips on how to frame or think about your time spent so it isn't focused on a single dimension.

2022-07-27 18:16:58 +0000 UTCMarshall I’d previously messaged you this as a topic suggestion. Sorry if this is duplicative.

2022-07-27 18:09:56 +0000 UTCCan you two talk about how limited magic has changed following the abandonment of blocks in favour of all large sets?

2022-07-27 18:09:13 +0000 UTCHey Marshall and Luis! Thank you for the continued high quality content. My question comes in a few parts: What are of your favorite limited mechanics of all time? Similarly, what are your least favorite limited mechanics? Is there any mechanic that you are hoping comes back in Dominaria United? Thanks guys can’t wait to hear your answers!

2022-07-27 18:08:34 +0000 UTCHey Marshall and Luis! I have a cube question. If they were to removed the power 9 from the latest MTGO vintage cube, or if you unpowered your vintage cube Luis, would other cards/archetypes need to change significantly for balance? Said differently - in cube, does the power 9 make certain archetypes better or directly enable archetypes, or does it just speed up every strategy similarly?

2022-07-27 18:05:22 +0000 UTCHi Marshall and Luis. A while back you were talking about the development of a potential pro level player and how the Arena ladder system didn't really foster that development, since it doesn't expose a player to other aspiring/ established pros and potentially get that player on a testing the way paper play does. Do you think there is potential for the emergence of an online aspiring pro community? One that uses Discord to test for Arena Opens and monthly/ yearly championships? What hurdles would such a community face that an in person community doesn't?

2022-07-27 18:03:53 +0000 UTCCooking question: you are always discussing the importance of getting better, learning, and progressing on the show. So what exciting or challenging dish/recipe do you think you'll attempt in the coming year that you haven't before?? Thanks, and stay hungry :)

2022-07-27 18:02:03 +0000 UTCHey Marshall and LSV! Do you think paper magic will someday be phased out, leaving only digital magic? If so, when do you think that may happen? Thank you for the incredible content, I am so grateful to you both!

2022-07-27 18:01:25 +0000 UTCHello fellas! Much love to Marshall, Luis, & P. Jeff, appreciate all you do for us Magic lovers. I really enjoy the "Old Set Reviews" with Old Timers Luis & TBS, and now that we have reached the point where sets were designed with Limited in mind, I've got a question. In addition to discussing the role the set played in Magic's history, could we get a general breakdown of what archetypes (if any) were seeded into the set for drafters? That was the only thing I felt was missing from the Mirage/Visions episode. Thanks again, much love from Virginia

2022-07-27 18:00:21 +0000 UTCHi Marshall, Hi Louis, I've recently built my first Cube and it's an Unstable Cube. I wanted to ask you, what is your take on Silver-border sets? There is Unfinity coming up soon, so are you going to draft it? All the best from Poland! Again, Wildsnakes (or #mtgdads) from my basement say "Hi, always happy to hear each new episode of LR. Thanks for everything you do! Tym

2022-07-27 17:58:51 +0000 UTCHey Marshall and Luis, huge fan of the show since I started playing Magic back in late 2020. Thanks to you all, I’ve leveled up in many ways but I am having trouble transferring certain skills optimally to paper drafts at my LGS. Do you have any advice for players (who primarily play and/or learned on Arena) for the gameplay special to paper? E.g. keeping track of picks during the draft, remembering triggers, etc. I understand that anything worth being good at takes time, but any tips would be very much appreciated! -Franco

2022-07-27 17:58:38 +0000 UTCi've realized more and more that i want an analog mechanical watch to help me reduce my dependence on my phone, cause every time I want to check the time, i end up also just getting sucked into the vortex of notifications and twitter and so forth. what's a good entry watch?
