Questions for Q&A Episode Thread!
Added 2022-10-21 08:45:37 +0000 UTCHey All,
Looks the guys may be doing the Q&A episode this week rather than next week, so put your questions here in the comments! Anything goes, the questions can be Magic related, about life, food, entertainment, hobbies, preferences, genius or grifters... anything you want!
Thanks!

Thanks for trying to decipher my question, Marshall / Luis. I appreciate your experience, because it is easy to be mislead by your "feelings" when developing as a player. I do think I had a degree of bad luck last weekend that left me salty, but your advice to take a breath, simplify the draft approach and not over rely on complex synergy was useful. My first draft this weekend went 7-1 with very aggro BW(splash red) go wide / heroic chage deck (angel of wrath helped, but I didn't really draw it that often). Your advice to K.I.S.S. / focus on CAB helped alot.

2022-10-21 17:51:58 +0000 UTCI struggle with playing around combat tricks in the early part of the game. When my opponent attacks into my creature, especially if it appears to be a chump attack, under what conditions should I block or let it through? If I don't block, but then on the next turn, hold up mana, good opponents will just not attack and play another spell. I think this is all exacerbated in Bo1, but when I don't block I just take "free" damage, and when I do, it feels like I get blown out. What heuristics do you use to handle blocking in the developing part of the game?

2022-10-21 17:37:50 +0000 UTCI hope this question makes sense. I'm envisioning a very particular scenario in dominaria limited but think this concept has application in other parts of the game. Scenario, I kept a 3 land hand on the draw w/ no two drops and an erie soultender (maybe a sketchy keep but let's just assume it was correct). It gets to turn three and I haven't yet drawn another land I would want (i have a 4/5 drop I'm keen to cast or whatever it might be). Instead on my third turn I drew a 2 drop. Is there anyway it makes more sense to play that over my erie soultender b/c I am more likely now to mill the lands I am looking to draw after not drawing them on the first turns of the game? I feel like the data and stats would say no, but this exact scenario happened and my soultender promptly milled 3 lands, I didn't draw another and I got run over in the game. I know my logic is flawed but looking back on the game I wished I didn't play the soultender in that spot. I'm looking to understand why my play might have been correct or incorrect? Are there stats that dictate why it is or is not correct to mill here? Am i still just as likely to mill non lands as lands despite not drawing any in my first three turns? Or is the difference just too small to matter? Thanks and hope this made sense, I've been struggling to make sense of this one in my head.

2022-10-21 15:56:43 +0000 UTCDMU is the most graveyard-centric draft format we've seen in a while, yet there are no graveyard hate cards to be found. What are your thoughts on this from a game/set design perspective?

2022-10-21 15:43:34 +0000 UTCHey guys! Thank you for all the hard work! I hope you love your new place LSV! In light of it being Magic's 30th anniversary, if you could go back in time and change 3 things about Magic at 3 different points in its history, what would they be and why?

2022-10-21 15:28:24 +0000 UTCHey guys, love the show, it's a highlight of my week. 2 questions: 1) Do you think the long summer gap and disappointment with baldur's gate would have been less of a problem if New Capenna and Neon Dynasty had switched places? Isn't it really just a problem of New Capenna being less replayable? 2) What are your thoughts on Digital-only cards making their way into the Arena Cubes? I really loved the cubes before but I'm not a fan of the digital/rebalanced cards. They still don't feel "real" to me, (much like Un-cards) and I find that their inclusion has soured me a bit on playing cube on Arena. If other people enjoy them, I'm glad they exist but I don't like how they've infiltrated non-Alchemy formats (including Historic Brawl, but that's a question for a different podcast) and made it hard to escape them.

2022-10-21 15:00:58 +0000 UTCHey guys. I've been having alot of success this draft format and hate to see it go. Where on the ranks do you feel this one lands? I know neon dynasty was great but I feel this one has gone over the top. Personally it lands in my top 5 behind modern masters, Khans, innistrad, and rise. It kicked og dominaria out for me. Keep up the great work and hope to see yall again sometime.

2022-10-21 14:31:42 +0000 UTCoh yes also +1 to Killer Combos episodes, that's super fun. would make for good YouTube content as well.

2022-10-21 13:20:37 +0000 UTCHave you guys seen the "30 years of Magic products" graphic that's been going around? Do you have any thoughts about the sustainability of Hasbro's growth strategy vs. the capacity of Magic's audience to handle / support / reciprocate this? Seems like a lot of us fans are generally somewhat concerned about this, but I thought maybe a more experienced perspective like yours' could provide some context. Thanks, love the show. https://onlyontuesdays27.com/2022/10/18/30-years-of-magic-the-gathering-products/

2022-10-21 13:19:15 +0000 UTCHello Marshall and Luis! One of my favorite LR mainstay shows - Killer Combos - seems to have fallen by the wayside in the past year. Any chance it makes a return if we see some especially combo-friendly cards in a forthcoming set? And are there any sweet under-the-radar DMU combos that come to mind? (Best I've pulled off is Vesuvan Duplimancy, Wingmantle Chaplain, and 4x Timely Interference)

2022-10-21 12:54:59 +0000 UTCSimilar to a recent Q: I feel lately that my worst draft decks feel like they suffer from "draw your cards in the wrong order" problem. Are there heuristics that help mitigate this, or is it just variance? Or is it just a flawed perception of another problem?

2022-10-21 12:38:24 +0000 UTCHey guys, in your opinion is it ever inappropriate to start a Patreon? In my case, I have a full time job and I’m perfectly content financially, but at the same time the stuff I create takes quite a bit of effort. I would feel bad to have people giving me money on the one hand, but on the other hand some of the companion content I produce probably won’t get created without that extra push of people holding me accountable. Thanks btw for this podcast - it’s my go-to and I really appreciate you guys and your outlook on things!

2022-10-21 11:42:38 +0000 UTCHey Luis and Marshal, over the years you've both talked about various skills you've learned from magic that have helped you in life. Of those, which one has had the biggest impact for each of you? I think this topic would make for a really interesting episode. Keep up the great work and I appreciate you both!

2022-10-21 11:28:09 +0000 UTCLSV, how did you manage to score personalized parking in New Jersey? ( Alternatively, when did you become a Low Speed Vehicle? :+) This is the sign that prompted my question: https://www.dropbox.com/s/469gecaui3ky6ga/LSV1.JPG?dl=0

2022-10-21 11:02:42 +0000 UTCMarshall, can you explain your excitement for creatures that bounce the opponents creatures? You seem to like them more than for example Ravenous Chupacabra. Louis, what is your equivalent to Marshalls excitement for Manowar?

2022-10-21 09:17:52 +0000 UTCThere’s two things that have helped me through the isolation of the pandemic and the transition to becoming a father: LR & drafting and Bo Burnhams “Inside”. Your attitude towards limited and life more broadly inspired me when I was most down and I’ve found much identification in Bo’s depiction of depression just after 30. You are both about five years older than me, but I was wondering if you’ve seen it and what your thoughts were if so? Always enjoy your content (and draft better for it) but actually most of all your worldview. Thanks!

2022-10-21 09:11:15 +0000 UTCHi Marshall, Hi Louis, wanted to get your take on set cubes. Our Wildsnakes (#mtgdads) group is doing them a lot. Not always they were great sets to draft (like Kamigawa Neon Dynasty) but sometimes we just like the set because of nostagia (like AFR). I know you like the Vintage Cube, but is there any particular set cube you'd like to try or go back to? As always, huge thanks for what you're doing and the Wildsnakes from my basement send their regerds ;) all the best! Tym

2022-10-21 09:09:12 +0000 UTCHi guys, thanks for the show! One element I don’t like about Alchemy, that I don’t think I’ve heard you discuss, is the sense of community. I don’t have time for live drafts, but when I’m on Arena, I really like the idea that people are using these same cards to physically play the game in Magic stores and game attics all over the world. In fact, I even like that some of those cards are used by Standard and Commander players, that everyone is looking at the same cards. It’s like radio versus Spotify: with radio, part of the joy is that everyone is listening to the same music. I dislike how Alchemy removes that and changes the cards per play style. Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I’m curious if you have the same feeling or I’d you care more about the raw gameplay advantages of Alchemy. Thanks!

2022-10-21 09:04:14 +0000 UTCHi LSV and Marshal! If limited control decks followed a cooking recipe, which ingredients will we be trying to get? For example: - 6-7 removals? - 3-4 counters? - 3-4 Finishers? (Bombs, big dudes) - 3-4 card drawing spells? - Rest: good value creatures? Thank you for the great work and content I really like when I see there is a new episode from you guys. Keep it up! Best Regards, Luigi

2022-10-21 09:03:45 +0000 UTCWith the release of The Brother's War coming up, can I expect to access LSV's set reviews on ChannelFireball? I am outside US, and thus not able to subscribe anymore ... Would be sad to miss this premium content!
