Luis is Back Q&A Episode!

Hey All,

Luis is coming back after his paternity leave this week, and we thought we would ease him back in with a nice Q&A episode to knock off the rust. So you can post any questions you want here, they can be about Magic, or anything else like food, how the guys handle real life situations, personal finance, content creation, anything!

As always, THANK YOU!

Late question here but better late than never! Back in February on Lords of Limited, Ben was trying to explain to Ethan, who knows little about the NBA, the Luka Doncic trade by comparing it to Magic cards. I think he settled on Minsc and Boo (Luka) for Thoughtseize (Anthony Davis) to put the power levels and age gaps into perspective. I found this exchange very entertaining and it got me thinking: Marshall also loves the NBA so could this be a recipe for a MTG/NBA crossover special episode?? I also used to love the LR v LOL showdowns so maybe you could revive your rivalry with a 3 on 3 basketball game. As always, love to listening to you guys and welcome back, Luis!

Mark Farewell

Sorry to confuse y'all, I just mentioned it since Jesse shows up as the opponent on Luis's cube videos every once in a while. (And I spelled her name wrong, sorry)

Mike Sapoznikow

Welcome back Luis! Belated congratulations to you and Gaby. Wishing you both as few sleep regressions as possible. Hypothetical question: You, BK, Marshall, and Paul are playing a game of Two-Headed Giant (let’s say LR vs. CR). Suddenly, someone suggests, "Let’s do high-maintenance vs. low-maintenance teams instead." What would the new teams look like?

Emre

Congratulations and welcome back Luis! I think it's clear by now that Magic is one of the all-time great games, like Chess, Poker or Bridge. But unlike those games, Magic seems to need a constant stream of new "content" (cards) to stay appealing. What is it that makes Magic different, and do you think there is a form of Magic that is truly timeless in that it can stay fun forever without new cards? Maybe Vintage Cube?

Sanny Syberfeldt

Welcome back Luis, and huge thanks to Paul for filling in so brilliantly. Luis, I've been enjoying your Duel Commander videos on the CFB YouTube channel. Could you tell us a bit about the format and what you've been enjoying about it?

Luke Iredale

Welcome back Luis and thanks to Paul for doing an awesome job filling in! Is there any chance we get back either Marshall's draft videos and/or showdowns with the Lords of Limited? Missing both dearly...

Florian Hohl

Welcome back LSV! How was your paternity leave with the twins? What are your thoughts on Aetherdrift? Do you have any opinions on the incoming Universe Beyond? FF? Spider-man? Avatar?

Kevin Nguyen

Lolol... oh man, this is too good. Could someone please produce the trailer for the MTG Space Jam movie? Is that too much to ask? (Also, bonus points if you can get Charles Barkley to make a cameo)

Brett Shears

Welcome back LSV and hello Marshall! Quick question: whatever happened to the MTG Breakdown? Is there anywhere to view the videos? From the mentions in the podcast it sounds like interesting stuff, but I can't find it anywhere. Thanks!

Andrew Sakai

You both seem to be able to maintain genuine and long lasting friendships with folks you work with on coverage and other content creating endeavors. Are there any lessons you have learned about how to navigate work conflict spilling over into the friendship sphere?

Thomas Williams

Luis: any tips for transferring skills between Magic and being a dad? (wonderful to have you back!)

Benjamin Reinhardt

I recently discovered Arroz con Pollo or basically one pot chicken and rice meals, Turkish spice, traditional Latin spice, caramelized lemon and olive ect What’s a new meal/food idea you have taken a liking to?

braden peterson

Luis, Now that you've been through both, what did you find more difficult: supporting twins through their first months, or supporting Marshall through an episode of LR?

Marc Rosenberg

Hello Marshall and welcome back LSV! A huge thank you to Paul and all that he has contributed! Congratulations to Matt Nass on winning the last PT! It was fun rooting for him. It seems he's close friends with you, Luis, so you must be super happy for him! I also want to shout out Ben Stark for his PT performance, making day 2 even without a testing team. He just had a terrible seat in his day 2 draft. Anyways, since you've been gone for most of 2 sets LSV, what did you think of Foundations and Aetherdrift? Marshall, I know you don't put out draft videos because you are a busy man, but would it be possible for Luis or Paul to play out the decks you guys draft in the walkthrough videos? I appreciate everyone in the LR family (Marshall, LSV, Paul, Jeff, and Sierko and TBS) that works so hard on the show!

Jeremy Church

Welcome back Louis! Paul's performance on the show was outstanding in my opinion (though the sign offs could have used some Louis' magic) Question for both of you: would you ever consider be a 3 person podcast you both and Paul? Or do the logistics/math don't add up (I'm happy to up my patreon subscription if that helps :) )

Paul Vidal

Welcome back Luis! I am a parent of two young boys. As you know, it's a ton of work! Every night I am refereeing their fights. Despite this, we are thinking about going for number 3. How much harder are you finding it?

Andrew "Nidy" Marchese

Welcome back Luis! Here's a specific card design question. How would you adjust Rover Blades (currently an F on 17 lands) to be a C+ to B- level playable? Maybe knock a mana off both casting cost and equip? Add a power? And would Aetherdrift be a better or worse set with a strong playable at colorless?

Charles

Luis! Welcome back! I’ve stayed tuned in on your cubing, but happy to see you back on LR. For both of you, what are the main reasons you love cube so much? It’s easily my favorite way to play. I recently started hosting cubes at my lgs and it has been a blast.

Morgan Kopf

Question for everyone, including Paul, even if he's listening at home: Do you think digital card games are the practical future of the genre? Luis has off-handedly mentioned the upsides to managing things like rules, re-balancing designs after release, and a few other practical benefits to cardboard game pieces. I know I personally love the feel of physical cards to fiddle with, but I'm unsure how universal that is, especially among the player-base born in the Pioneer-legal formats. (To be clear, I'm not talking about the disastrously-executed Alchemy sets, I mean games from the ground up meant for screens like Eternal)

Spencer St. James

How about Jessie Robkin winning the Charlotte RCQ?!!!

Mike Sapoznikow

Luis, how would you grade Paul Cheon’s performance filling in for you?

Joe

Welcome back Luis! Do the twins have a favorite card(s) yet?

Tim Day

Welcome back, Luis! I hope you managed to get more than a few hours of sleep the past couple months. I'd love to get a cube update. Any Aetherdrift cards in your list that have impressed you, or older cards you've gotten into rotation that you think are keepers? I'm also curious if you had any big takeaways from the "Retro Cube" -- did building and/or drafting your list give you any insights into where Magic is at in 2025, or cause you to rethink any of the ways you approach modern cube? Big congrats on the new additions to the fam!

Sam Pape

Welcome back, LSV! And congrats to Marshall and Paul for some truly epic booth coverage at the last Pro Tour! Question for all three of you: I know that everyone isn't a fan of Universes Beyond or the more thematic planes (Wild West for example), but is there any particular IP, world, or concept that you would like to see a set built around? Either something that you think would make for a good top-down set, or just something that you really like? Maybe a food-themed set around Kenji López-Alt's The Food Lab, complete with a card for an Artifact Equipment "Wok"?!

Chris Doersen

Welcome back Luis! Question for you, Marshall, and your extended LR support hosts: (Paul, Sierko, etc) what is one of your favorite games outside of Magic, and what is a rule/mechanic from it you think could improve upon the limited experience in particular?

Cal Wacker

Welcome back, Luis! Since I have been listening to Paul for a while, my sentiment has been that you and Paul excel in different things. Paul is very good at explaining things and making things relatable to the players who are not very good (like me), while you are better at moonshots, so to speak. This contrast plays out in real life a little bit in how you guys create your own spaces, with you doing Vintage Cube drafts while Paul does Standard set drafts. Do you agree with this sentiment? Why or why not? Big thanks to you, Marshall, and Paul as always.

Atipong Pathanasethpong

Welcome back Luis! What's the best game of magic you've won over the last few months while juggling the twins (not literally)?

Dom

The last time Sierkovitz was on, he talked about the merits of taking the best card out of each pack early (first 8 picks). Of course there is cavets. How much better does a multi-colored card han the next best card for you to consider it taking it early? What about a three color card (e.g. would you take Loot, the Pathfinder in DFT first pick)?

Alexander Zaitzeff

First off welcome back Luis!! Question for Luis. With your time away, how much did you miss doing LR as whole, and what didnt you miss about it? 2nd question as a group. Has aetherdrift lived up to your expectations with how grindy the format has been and are there any changes you'd make to it to make it an timer? Congrats again Luis!

David Bruno

I struggled with Duskmourn, I’m struggling with Aetherdrift, but I did well in Bloomburrow and Foundations. What would make one set harder than others for the same player? What skills does the more “difficult” sets stress that the more “simple” sets don’t?

Dylan Jeffrey

Welcome back Luis! My question is about non-magic hobbies. Marshall has mentioned that he enjoys cars and it's a reason why he's into watches. I'm a big motorsport fan myself and I'm curious if Marshall is interested in any forms of racing? For Luis, what sports have you been using to get through the twins experience? Thank you!

Ian Ouellette

Let's say hypothetically that hostile aliens come to Earth and challenge the human race to the objectively best way to determine the fate of humanity, Team Draft Vintage Cube. Obviously, we have selected Marshall, Paul and Luis as our champions. However, the aliens have cheated by stealing the powers of some of the other best players in the Magic community, a la Space Jam. What powers do the aliens steal from whom? Does humanity come out on top? Thanks for a putting out a great show each week.

John
