Alpha Adrian part 8

Adrian kept looking over a shoulder as he dealt with the authorities, hoping that she would re-appear.

The animalistic instinct to accept the chase Eva offered was strong. His skin was irritated, refusing him peace until his female was back against his chest.

He sighed for the umpteenth time.

In that elevator, they had been threatened by death, but protected from reality. In that box of death, he wasn't an alpha or a CEO, and Eva wasn't a human or vet. They were just two souls in the grasp of death. Equals under the scrutiny of fate.

The second they were plucked out, the safety bubble burst. Reality flooded them, placing an ocean between them. Now, he didn't know where she was. She was too far both literally and figuratively, struggling against the waves of doubt and anger.

Just three more days.

He'll give her three days to collect her thoughts before making his move. He'd give her answers, even if she didn't want them. He was even prepared to bed. Never in his adult life had he fallen to his knees, but she was an exception.

Three more fucking days.

It was tempting to throw money at the problem and drag her to his side, but respect started at autonomy. He would win her fairly and squarely, not by plucking her out of her world.

"I've got Alpha Zena on the line," Calvin called out.

"What does she need?" he asked as he dragged a pen through the latest paper that was put in front of him.

"She's offering reinforcements and is wondering if you're alright."

"Extend my gratitude and reject the offer. Repeat for any other Alpha or Beta that calls," Adrian instructed.

He wasn't surprised that Zena was the first to call. Bleak Moon and Red River were close allies, and Zena was sweet on him. She harmlessly flirted, not shy of communicating her interest.

Adrian was flattered. After all, she was a powerful woman, having paved the way to her own success instead of inheriting it. While she was a catch, he never entertained her interest because she simply wasn't his mate.

It took hours of answering questions and signing papers before he was finally able to escape to his apartment. He tossed and turned on the bed and glared at the high ceiling. Everything surrounding him was wrong. The walls were too far apart, the night was too bright. It was crazy, but he missed being entrapped in the narrow walls and pitch blackness of the elevator.

He couldn't help but wonder what Eva was doing. Googling the fuck out of his name, he was sure. It was a shame that she'd find nothing but his business front. The only way she'd find out about his werewolf identity was if he told her.

He turned to his side and stared out the window. The urge to shift and run until he collapsed would sadly go unsatisfied. This city– as beautiful as it was, was a jungle of concrete. There was no open space for him to embrace his fur and be one with nature.

He thought of Eva's reaction to the reveal of his first identity. Even if she forgave his first lie, he didn't know if she would ever recover from the blow of his wolf.

Albert was another man. Alpha Adrian, however, was another species.

He was alone in this dilemma. He had no one to ask advice from. Everyone in his social circle was a werewolf, because his life never had space for a human.

Until now.

"He lied to me. We had this strange click in such a vulnerable situation. Why did he lie about who he was? I can't wrap my head around it. I mean, I explained that I was looking for his sister. I can only assume that he connected the dots. I'm fucking terrified, Zya. What if he lied because he had intentions to fuck me over after we got out of that hole?"

"Girl, breathe," Zya tried to soothe as she kept her eyes on the road. "Talk slower. You're throwing so much at me. So I get that he gave you his jacket to protect you from the dust, and he was super sweet when your bladder thought that it was an excellent time to pee. You lost me after the whole lying part. What makes you think that he lied because he had dark intentions?"

"His sister sued my cousin. I told him I was trying to meet with Lana to sort this out."

The car jerked when Zya stomped on the breaks. "L–ana?" she stuttered. "Did you just say Lana?"

Eva frowned, confused by Zya's sudden distress. "Yeah... Lana Miller. The rich, lying asshole is Adrian Miller."

Zya's lips trembled as she tried to fake a smile. With a clearing of her throat, she replied, "right. Sorry. It's just that I recognized the name. Yeah, they're rich, alright."

Zya knew that Alpha family, just like everyone else in the werewolf community.

Zya knew all about werewolves. After all, she was one herself. Well, she was supposed to be. She didn't get the wolf gene. This shortcoming was what made her move away from her family at the age of twenty. Her pack was a constant reminder that she was broken. A mutation. A genetic failure.

How did her best friend– this big-hearted, far-from-rich, human, get entangled with a giant in the werewolf community?

Were they mates? Mateships between werewolves and humans were rare, but between alphas and humans was nearly unheard of. Nevertheless, they weren't impossible.

Oh, shit. This just got very fucking complicated.

"What do I do? He'll come for me. I know it," Eva whispered, her hand reaching to touch her neck as if she could feel his gaze,.

"All I know is that you need a break. Why don't you join me this weekend? I'm going to my sister's place, upstate."

"Your sister? You mean to Zena's?"

Zya nodded. "The one and only. It's about time you meet her."

*It's crazy to think that Artemis, Hope, Quinn, Kai, and so many other characters don't exist in this timeline.
