I push past Lorcan and get the fuck out of that closet. Picking up my long robe as I run for the safety of my bedroom.

PRESENTLY….

VICTORIA

I pull at my hair. Tormented by Beta Lorcan’s words. I can’t believe Maeve did it again. She’s haunting me from her grave. This is my punishment for stealing her identity.

Thorne has no idea about Lorcan’s betrayal. I didn’t either, but now I’m complacent. And the secret is choking me. Because Thorne deserves to know his right hand man is a snake not to be trusted.

But if I tell Thorne the truth, I would be screwing myself over. It’s not fair. I didn’t make these mistakes, and yet the universe is looking at me to amend them.

How many men were there? How did Maeve find the time to screw the whole fucking pack? I understand that the first time she cheated was when she discovered Thorne was mate and wanted a last hoorah.

Lorcan made it sound like the subsequent infidelity was because she was bitter at Thorne for rejecting her.

I stay in the bedroom for hours. Stuck in the same robe, in the same pose. Unable to get any work done as I lose myself to anxiety.

My stomach is growling, but I don’t have the focus to eat, either.

What am I going to do? I can take this secret to the grave, but then I’ll never sleep again. I’ll be tormented every time I see Thorne laugh and shake hands with Lorcan’s hands which have secretly been all over my body. No. All over Maeve’s body. I didn’t do this. I didn’t taint myself.

Eventually, the afternoon comes and I know I have to get up and face Thorne. He’ll be waiting for me by the lake and will be suspicious if I don’t go.

I take the robe off and change into the first thing I find. One of the many sundresses in Maeve’s closet. The woman could dress classy but damn well couldn’t act it.

I drag my feet on the way to the lake, secretly hoping Thorne doesn’t show.

But of course he’s there. Already waiting for me. Standing tall with his hands clasped behind him. Staring at the lake like he’s analyzing it. I wonder what he sees in his reflection.

Power?

“Hey!” I call out to him, as if to announce myself. A silly thought, given that the Alpha must have heard me approaching a mile away.

He turns, and his hands fall to my hands.

“Oh, sorry. I didn’t bake anything today.”

“Why not?” He asks.

“I was…tired. Didn’t sleep too well last night.”

He chuckles. “Your snoring could have fooled me.”

“I…I don’t snore!”

“Oh, but you do. It surprised me. I always thought you’d be uptight and lady-like even in your sleep.”

That was Maeve. She was the lady. She was the cheater. Not me.

“What’s wrong?” He asks, seeing something on my face.

“Nothing. I just…I’ve had a lot on my mind since I had the accident.”

“Is it fucked up to admit that I’m glad you fell from that balcony?” He asks. “You’re a different person now.”

Except that…I’m becoming more and more like Maeve every day that I protect her secrets. I don’t want to be this way.

“Do you…like me?”

His brow furrows as he thinks of an answer. “I’m intrigued by you. But love? No. I’m far from that. You’ve made mistakes, Maeve. You must understand that.”

I lower my head. Of course he doesn’t love me. He barely knows me. And his love isn’t what I’m looking for. I just need his help to get back home. We don’t belong together.

I curse myself for feeling disappointed.

He touches my chin and lifts my head up, surprising me with his warm touch.

“Fuck,”I exhale shakily. “Thorne, do you trust me?”

His eyebrows furrow. “More than before, I suppose. Why? Do you need something?”

“I have…to tell you something. But you have to promise that you won’t get angry and hurt me.”

“That’s not who I am,” he replies, crooking his head to the side. “I don’t hurt females. You should know this. I didn’t banish you after your betrayal because the moon goddess demands your protection.”

That’s good, I guess. He won’t get mad enough to drown me in the fucking lake and drown me.

“Thorne, I…I have loved getting to know you. You’re a great Alpha and you’ve been through so much already. I…”

He cups my cheeks and lowers his lips to the top of my head. “Enough. Tell me what it is and I’ll take care of it.”

“You can’t trust Lorcan,” I finally blurt.

“Lorcan? We grew up together. He’s my Beta, Maeve. This is a ridiculous accusation.”

Oh, fuck.

My stomach becomes knots. But this is the right thing to do. I don’t want to be like Maeve. I want to protect him.

And Lorcan certainly doesn’t deserve his trust.

His face darkens, but his hands remain on my face as he grits. “What. Happened.”

Oh, fuck he’s pissed.

“I think something happened between us. But that wasn’t me. That’s why I’ve been so different lately. I know it sounds crazy, but I have no memories of Maeve or any of her mannerisms because I’m not her. My name is Victoria and I’m a human that died from cancer. I was teleported into her body when she fell off the balcony. I know I sound crazy, Thorne, but you have to believe me. I’ll do a lie detection test. I read that they were used in the past. We can locate one somewhere.”

I inhale sharply, “I am…falling for you but I know that’s not right so I need your help getting back to Europe! Send me home so we can go our separate ways before I make a mistake. I can’t replace Maeve. I can’t be your mate. I’m not her.”

He stares at me. Eyes so intense that they’ve like a void pulling me in. Mystical and powerful enough to kill me a second time.

“You…are a human woman named Victoria?”

I exhale. “Yes. Yes, I am. And I know Luna Millie. She was a nurse at my hospital. You can verify this. She will confirm that I’m not crazy, and that I died from cancer.”

“And you fucked Lorcan?”

“No. No, I didn’t touch anyone! That was Maeve. Her decisions and mistakes. We’re different women.”

I sound insane. Like I’m trying to split personalities and blame everything on my darker side. But Thorne has the power to verify Millie’s location.

“How…fucking…convenient.” He snarls, stepping backward. “I’m fucking done with you, Maeve.”

He grabs my forearm and tugs me forward.

“Where are you taking me!”

“To the hospital. If you’re so sure you’re Victoria, then fine. They’ll put you in a straight jacket and lock you away.”

“I’m not crazy!” I shout as I dig my heels into the grass and fight for my freedom.

His hold is firm. Tightening when he stops and turns around, glaring at me with a hatred that warms my entire face.

“No. I am. I’m fucking insane for giving you a chance. I’m fucking insane for murdering my Beta.” He snarls, jabbing two fingers into his temple. Utterly terrifying as his fangs lengthen in threat of a shift.

“Murd…” I can’t even finish the word.

“He will die. There’s no other option. And you…” he spits on the ground, missing my feet by a few inches. “You’re already fucking dead to me.”

I cry as he takes me to the hospital, no longer fighting him because I know I’ll never best his strength.

He hands me off to doctors who ask all types of questions I cannot answer. Questions about when I started to have my delusions and confusion of identity. They think I’m insane, and Thorne makes no effort to verify my claims.

Then, hours later, teeth-clattering news are whispered throughout the hospital. I’m locked away in a room and hear the nurses whisper outside in panic.

Beta Lorcan is dead. Alpha Thorne has taken his life.
