If your co-workers give you any stick for calling it Soccer, just tell them you're using the original English phrase ;) Soccer is in fact an English word - Short for 'Association Football' which is the full name of the sport. When the game was started this was used to differentiate from the more popular and well-known at the time sport that this was allegedly spun from 'Rugby Football' which now is mainly just known as 'Rugby'.

Q1) If you win the cup, can you still win the Season? A1) Yes - If you won the league you were in and one of the cups, you would be 'doing the Double' - if you won two or more cups as well as the league you would be doing 'the Triple' or 'Quadruple' depending on how many competitions you are in (Which can depend on which league you are in) Triples and Quadruples are rare but not impossible. Its also technically possible for a team from a division lower than the Premier League to win the Cup, beating out all the Prem teams - though again that would be rare due to the money and therefore quality of player discrepancy between Premier League teams and teams from lower divisions. The prize for winning a cup may just be money (millions) but it may also qualify you for a 'European competition' the following season, which can also generate money for clubs. You wouldn't win a cup as a lower team and automatically be put into the top division, if that makes sense? Q2) Do mid tier teams still get into UEFA Champions League? A2) Yes, but it does get convoluted so let me know if it odesn't make sense, I'm going to try and simplify it as best as I can. Some leagues have a higher reputation for quality, such as: Premier League (Englands highest division) Serie A (Italys highest division) LaLiga (Spains highest division) so some of the teams in these divisions that may not have won a cup, and didn't win the league will qualify for the Champions League (or Europa League which is similar but played by teams not quite as successful as the ones that qualified for the Champions League) In the Premier League for example, any team that finishes in the top 4 after the 38-game season is consluded automatically aulify for Champions League. This adds added interest in the games because you may have a season where 1 team runs away with the title demolishing everyone, but there's still value in finishing as high as poss to see if you can steal a European spot. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
