3 American Myths

Comments

The saddest realisation that I've seen Americans make is when they learn that the Pilgrims set sail on Mayflower because they were disgusted by how much religious freedom there was in Britain, and they instead wanted to create a solely puritan nation with no freedom at all.... .....Meaning that America was borne completely from a position of religious zealotry, intolerance, and absolute control.

There definitely ARE houses with flags, and patriotic people. But it’s definitely not every house like I think it’s believed to be. And a lot of people that have flags, that’s either 1) about as far as their patriotism goes, aside from singing the national anthem at sporting events or celebrating the 4th of July, or 2) someone in the household served in the military. I definitely think it seems to non-Americans that that’s all much bigger and worse than it actually is. We get hundreds of comments a day saying Americans think America is the greatest country in the world, and most don’t even actually think that. I know a LOT of people, and I can maaaayyyyybbbe think of one who thinks that.

From the outside, it looks like a very Culty country. We hear about swearing allegiance to a flag every day at school from a young age. We get shown all these images of flags outside houses. Is that true?

J'adore rural France, I have a wee bolt hole in central Brittany.. Best farm produce, butter and cheese on the planet..

The 'vocal fry' o'meter in this whole video is off the charts 🤣

Oh it was coffee.

10:05 was funny, Taylor starts saying how their food is terrible, full of toxins etc. Just as Stevie picks up an energy drink concoction - realises what's being said so doesn't take a sip and puts it down.

Andy

That was a really interesting reaction, thank you. To be fair, these points run concurrent with every country's sense of patriotism, nationalism and jingoism. It would be remiss for us Brits to ignore the fact throughout modern history, we've done the same to a certain degree. Just look at some of the comments on reaction channels that deal with British culture and entertainment, and you'll find a large amount of flag shagging jingoism over how we believe Britain does everything the best. (Rather hypocritical of us, considering we criticise the US for the doing same). I just think the problem is that America tends to dial it up to 11, which gives off an impression of arrogance. The way I see it, the more a Government tries to brainwash or convince its people that their country is the greatest, the more they're trying to hide the fact that they're screwing its people over.

I think the greatest country in the world thing is just more culturally pervasive in the US, I’ve been to sporting events even and heard people speaking over the tannoy making that statement, followed by the anthem, followed by the military flyover, followed by the chants of USA - and that’s just not as common in much of the world; it’s very rare to hear people or politicians make that statement even as a throwaway - it’s not part of the broader mindset (but there’s absolutely a vocal minority who will say similar things, increasingly); so totally agree that there’s way more nuance to it and how people think and feel than how Europeans might often make it seem, but at the same time there’s still very visibly different cultural things going on. I’ve definitely noticed the greatest country rhetoric shifting over the last 10 years though.

You still have plenty of freedoms to in Europe as well, so it’s not necessarily mutually exclusive (which how it’s sometimes framed and comes across to a degree in their video, not how you were framing it) The American Revolution has its roots in British ideas of freedom, it’s just turned up to 11

Delhi Belly is a thing because of poor water sanitation in India; I think their point was because the tap water is often poor in the US (of course not everywhere but I’ve experienced it plenty) then it must be worse outside the US

9:32.... It's just not true at all though. You free to have a beer before the ridiculous age of 21? How about crossing the road where you want? Are you free to go to any hospital or doctor you want, without a charge of any kind? Most free people don't have to pledge allegiance to anything. Just for reference, I've never heard my national anthem, I know what it is I've just never heard it for real. I'm 44 😂

It is a bit weird that I have been traveling for a living for 30 years and not once went to the States... Canada, Central America, south America, India, all of Africa, Europe, Australia, middle east, far east, Scandinavia, etc etc. Maybe one day I'll pop across the pond for a cup of tea.. Stephen mate, you are going to have your eyes pleasantly opened when you come to the UK.. I think the main difference is we in the UK work to live, and you guys seem to live to work.. Why wait to enjoy your life, its not a rehearsal.. A good example of this is a friend of mine, a local village police officer, great guy, worked hard all his life, came to retire after having done the right thing all his life.. 10 days after retiring he drops dead from a heart attack after popping to the loo for a pee in the middle of the night... 65 years almost wasted.. so you ask yourself, is it all worth it?

Jason, blink twice if you're being held against your will.

Some great points brought up here. I lived in France (South West in a rural area) as a kid and I definitely feel like priorities are different there, even from the UK. There was a much more traditional family centric community in my village. Sundays were spent with your family, evening meals were a much more traditional in that everyone sat at the table at the same time and the evening meal took longer. It wasn't just eating food, it was a time to reconnect with your family. At least, these were my experiences 😊

Emily

Oh, I like this kinda thing.
