I always run my videos by my wife, and this was the first time that she actually asked me to cut something out for the fear of backlash.
I wanted to make a fun video poking some fun at my own country to lighten the mood https://youtu.be/8YYQcxJ9zDY
However, Vivi was bothered by the last part (the one above). I originally did it all in Chinese, but she said she didn't want people to feel nervous. So I then recorded it in English. She fully agreed that what I said was true, but she feared that most mainlanders would take offense to it rather than learn something.
I'm between a rock and a hard place right now. My wife is a wealth of very needed information right now with the position China is facing in the world, and I am a useful perspective on how things work in China from a western perspective. Self censorship is a despicable thing, but it's a tight rope to walk.
I'm going to make a video this week just for you guys about the very tricky situation we are in.
