Indeed propaganda is alive and well. Nicely done video. As an expat familiar with both sides of the US-China coin, though very limited in my knowledge of TikTok, I try my best to best to analyze things objectively. Clearly propaganda is a tool for self-promotion and saving face--they use it, we use it, and anyone who seeks to gain some type of leverage when fear of losing sets in. First, the concept that the shortest distance between points A and B is a straight line is basically nonexistent in China, thus it's understandable, if frustrating, that you have double-talk and deflection such as what we saw from the professor, who clearly should take up residence in a comedy troupe when he retires from teaching. This is but one example, sure, but it's a manner that's woven into the cultural fabric. As to the gentleman of modest means availing us of an apartment tour, I absolutely agree that this is not typical. Granted, young Chinese are often greatly assisted by parents, many of whom saved their money to help with home buying when their kids grow up, but in this particular case, it's unlikely based on the fact that he said he "lived alone" and it was a new fairly modern apartment--typical layout, but clearly not your average cookie-cutter home. As a writer, I mentioned more than a few times in my upcoming book that "the roses do have thorns," suggesting that all is certainly not as it appears in what's pitched to Western media and in the minds of those who would judge China negatively. Sure there are plenty of upscale shopping malls and international brands that make the headlines in the financial papers, but walk a few blocks down and to the left and you'll get a much clearer idea of the "real" conditions that the average person exists in.
