I suspect that Xi views his social and political crackdowns, and centralization of party power in the hands of himself and chosen cronies, as a necessary (and of course self-serving) response to China's fading economic and climate prospects.As the economy and climate worsen it'll be increasingly necessary to impose austerity measures that at first gradually and then rapidly worsen the living conditions of more and more Chinese. The surveillance state dictatorship, and its vast network of internal security forces, will be the only things that keep the lid on dissent and prevent massive public anger from erupting and overthrowing the CCP's hold on power in much if not all of China. My guess is that Xi's efforts are doomed to fail, In a best case outcome the CPP may eventually find itself in control of only a rump state that's lost effective control of huge breakaway territories, and in worse case the CCP may disintegrate entirely. All this may occur perhaps sooner than anyone imagines.
