Weekly Weird-- Netflix's The One review

I watched this when if first launched in March but waited for our marriage and family theme month to talk about it. (Very minor spoilers)

Quick summary: The story surrounds the concept of finding 'the one'-- your perfect 100% genetic match that you are guaranteed to fall in love with, because science! --and the company offering this service, entitled as well, "The One". The story follows several sets of characters whose plotlines intermingle to some degree, looking at the different ways this kind of science introduced into the world could play out, along with a bit of a murder mystery interwoven as the main plot.

I usually don't get into doing reviews for things, as I feel that there's more qualified people to be talking about shows and such, but I just FELT this one so much while watching it I had to comment, so I'm just gonna gush a little about a few points. The concept of the 'one true love' is a troupe that exists in tons of media (including way walkers) and it's nice to get a slightly different angle on it. The science is relatively simple but effective, but what really drew me in was how the connection that being 'matched' was played out/explained.

What really took my breath away in this one was the main character, Rebecca played by Hannah Ware. She reminds me of Angelina Jolie a bit her acting...gods-- I don't know award shows that well but she deserves something for best actress for this roll, really. and such a multi faceted, well written female character! Morally ambiguous painted with large swaths of grey, not even until the final moments do we really get the full picture of her. And even then...I suspect it's really up for debate on exactly how you view her. So good. So well written. A treat to watch her.

But really, check it out. There's more than just her to watch, the whole cast was brilliant and as a show it managed to do my two favorite things, it kept me wondering what the heck was going to happen next (though for me, because writer brain catches tropes and hints like crazy) and it managed to get me to shift allegiances for different characters as I watched and the story unfolded-- this hard to pull off, because so many shows/books/etc. paint characters in black and white boxes, good guys, bad guys, etc.. This has been one of those rare treat shows where everyone has a certain level of complexity that makes them very, very human and really wonderful to watch. Really, go binge it it's only got 8 episodes! 😊
