WWU Code Peek

It's two more unscheduled peeks behind the scenes of this month's playable preview.

In the code language of ChoiceScript, a text line that begins with *comment becomes invisible to the eventual reader/player of the story. This is very useful for two co-authors working on the same file. We often use the *comment tag preserve old code that we are editing and point out brand new segments to each other. It is the best tool when one author wants the other author to be easily able to follow changes in the text.

In these screencaps you can see that many of our "hidden comments" between co-authors (highlighted in green) often begin with J HERE or MAC HERE

"MAC HERE" means the following comment was written by J, and is directed at Mac

"J HERE" means the following comment was written by Mac, and has information that J needs to see

The hidden "j/mac here" comments are where we have ongoing conversations about things like plot and character choices, code structure, and variable balancing. It's also how we laugh and blow off steam together. Using consistent phrases make our new notes easily findable when we pass a file from one author to the other.

Let us know what kind of behind-the-scenes coding things you are curious about, and we will try to share in future "Code Peek" posts!

These screenshots are from "Chapter 12: Search the Museum," this month's upcoming playable preview for Way Walker + High Mage Tiers. Thanks for taking a walk in our world -- J and Mac
