In the final panel it is clear that I was correct about Franz completely melting through the door to Hydrargyros' Lair, rather than triggering it to open with his modified flame and then melting stuff just inside the door frame.

Love that we started out this story with a Tolkien reference, and now there's another wink at him towards the end. Running water, huh? Is there a fast boat out of here? I'm getting tired just thinking about all those stairs.
