Gremlins (1984) CHRISTMAS MOVIE REACTION! COMMENTARY!

Comments

I saw this in the theater in 1984 when it came out. The scene where Spike's skeleton comes leaping out of the fountain still scares the crap out of me.

One thing to bear in mind with Gremlins is that Joe Dante was trying to make a big-budget B-movie. It was deliberately playing on expectations around the cliches of small town Christmas in America in cinema (see It's a Wonderful Life) and specifically the story of her father falling down the chimney was tongue-in-cheek. All the things that you find unsettling or uneven about the tone are the things that at the time the movie came out were so revolutionary and enjoyable, because they cut through the established patterns and predictable narrative and character construction that audiences were used to seeing. There are so many Easter Eggs and little clues and in-jokes that they added and I'd definitely recommend you reading up some more about them, even things like the films that are advertised on the front of the cinema in the town and the E.T. doll in the store (given Spielberg's involvement) just add so much to the movie for me. It's a classic and for me a solid 8.9 out of 10. Merry Christmas!

I wouldn't sit on the couch for a month because my sister told me that's where the gremlins hide.

John

Dude, it totally messed me up.

Such a fun time and huge nostalgia. My dad took me to see it when I was 7 and this was probably my first 'horror'. Absolutely terrified me.

John

Absolutely, Gizmo is definitely the cutest.

Action, action, action and some comedy mixed in. Written by Shane Black (wrote Lethal Weapon and was Hawkins in Predator). The soundtrack was done by Alan Silvestri, did the soundtrack for Predator.

Wenona Bellmore

Oh yes, that was a great commentary on a film that I love

my fave non-traditional Christmas movie is The Long Kiss Goodnight lol

Wenona Bellmore

What a great selection.

In fact, I still have my Gremlins lunch box.

Fellas, I saw this in a theater when I was 5 years old. It totally messed me up for Christmas. But, at least Pheobe Cates was cast, and she was my first crush.

I have to agree with Shaun on this one and give it an 8. Loved this movie since I was a kid. Will always love Gizmo, he's SO CUTE.

Have either of you watched the sequel? It's amazing and in a way, totally different.
