This is the first time I've seen reactors (or anybody for that matter) have such issue with the show's theme song. Whedon wrote it specifically for "Firefly" and, I believe, it was intended to directly reflect Mal's desire for "freedom", whatever that means to him.

2021-07-19 23:13:37 +0000 UTCOne of the ways the show shows its age is that by being cancelled early, when Whedon was expecting the standard 20+ episodes in a season, we get more fluff and filler. The story just isn't packed as tight as it would have been if he'd known he only had 14 (or even the 11 that actually aired) to work with. He thought he had a lot more time to slow burn his way into River's story, teasing us with tiny glimpses like her adapting to Badger's accent (and even somehow knowing specifically what colony he was from and the accurate (from his reaction) description of his character.)
