AirPlane (1980) Full Length Movie Reaction

Comments

I think it's true what Shaun said that some of the jokes are now lost on audiences as they won't get all the references. It really was an incredible multi-layered movie that when watched as a serious film, still has all the decent character tropes and backstories that you see in disaster movies of the era, some decent action and thrills, nice performances and a great selection of well known actors (at the time) parodying themselves. I put this above Holy Grail personally, as that movie is a bit unfinished and sketchy by comparison to me, and has more gags that don't land with such huge belly laughs for me as this movie. But's it is subjective of course, as people laugh at different things :)

Also the "random" bird was a vulture(or buzzard) which has long been a harbinger of impending doom in movies

Paul Johnson

Don't know if you guys are aware, but this movie includes a post-credit scene three decades before the MCU made it a normal thing for movies to do.

The things you think are "so random" really aren't. Everything that seems "random" (and isn't an obvious joke) s referencing or parodying something. A lot of them are just too old for you to have experienced, or are parts of cinematic history that you just haven't seen yet. For example, the scene where the lady said that her husband wouldn't want a second cup of coffee was a reference to this commercial from the 70's that us old people were familiar with when the movie was originally released: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJ4kCF22O2w Bonus, they even got the same actress from the commercial to give the line in the movie. And then after having established the reference, they brought it back with the 'vomit' version for a bigger payoff on the joke.
