I'd suggest it would be worth you watching Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976) as another worthwhile film that was a much earlier portrait of a member of society unravelling. Perhaps also Falling Down (1993) has a simpler view of a day in the life of a protagonist we can identify with who realises he has become the antagonist.
