Reacting To Heartstopper (One Year On) - Episode 5

Hey beautiful people,

Welcome back to another video - apologies it's a day late. It feels great to be back behind the camera again post-illness!

Episode 5... we have a couple of revelations... See you in the comments!

Love, always ❤️

You are glowing. It's one of my favourite episodes. Nick and Charlie flirting is just so cute. The photo of Nick and Charlie is cute, The photo of you and Reiss is cute. Just so many cute wholesome couples.

Yeah, looked up that one but the one that caught me up was "chirpsing."

I agree. I also think that is the moment that he believes what Nick is saying. Before that it is a bit too much like a nicer version of Ben, keeping him a secret. When Nick says he was trying to cancel but her dog died, it is so Nick that Charlie realises it is the truth and not an excuse for trying to hide him.

I love this episode, I think it's kinda where everything changes, Tao tells Charlie how he really feels, Nick and Charlie have their wonderful chat in the arcade about how Nick feels, Tao tells Nick what he thinks of him and warns him about hurting Charlie. Then we have Tao and Elle finally feeling that first spark of something between them and finally we get to see Nick articulating amazing well how he feels to Imogen who I think kinda knows how he feels as I think she's also hiding her true self from everyone as well. A perfect episode to get everything out there in the open. Love it 😍

Also American. Also had to look up the word. I feel better knowing I'm not the only one.

One of the things that I notice about Kit is that he plays Nick’s physical reactions so well. For example, he is literally breathless after each time that he and Charlie kiss, throughout the season, not only in this episode. I also love the interactions between Tao and Elle here, particularly when they’re sitting together zapping aliens, because the little graphic stars are reflected in her glasses, so she actually has stars in her eyes for Tao.

Graham & Ruth May

I got that as well! ☺️

The little smile from Charlie when Nick says “her dog died” is actually one of my favorite subtle moments in the show. To me, that moment isn’t really about the dog - it’s about Nick, and his earnestness, his hapless niceness. Charlie already knows Nick is like this, and he loves that about Nick. But because of everything with Tao and his own negative thoughts (exacerbated by his history with Ben), he’s probably questioning his own judgement a little and worrying that maybe he’s fooling himself. That maybe he’s expected too much out of Nick too soon, and put a little too much blind trust in him. But then Nick’s apologizing and explaining the situation and saying with panicked eyes “AND THEN HER DOG DIED” and Charlie smiles because *of course* that’s what happened. And of course Nick was worried about hurting Imogen’s feelings, because he is the sort of person who actually *cares* about other people, even if it’s a girl he doesn’t even want to date. And it’s one of the many reasons that Charlie adores him.

I also see so many more details the more often I watched the episodes. The lighting in the bowling alley first of all as a hint to Nick’s sexuality…And even the straws in Nick’s and Charlie’s drinks are blue and yellow. I love these tiny little details so much 🥰

Tao is the master of comebacks 😂 I hope we get more of that in season 2! And I’ve written this in the comments on your YouTube edit for that episode, but I have to write it again: The scene in the bathroom were Nick is listening to their conversation. When Charlie says „but he’s“ and you see Nicks look of pure fear…him being afraid that Charlie might out him. And then when Charlie says „my friend“ and you see the mix of relief and also guilt in Nicks eyes… the way Kit was able to transfer all those emotions gives me chills every time ♥️ And of course the entire scene in front of the Maxx Grab machine is just so wholesome, healthy and lovely 🥰

I still think this is probably my favorite episode of the series, partly because of the birthday party scene between Charlie and Nick, but even more so because of the scene between Nick and Imogen. I totally agree that I think that speech that Nick gives about feeling like his real self has been hidden for so long is some of Kit’s best acting on the show. I so thoroughly identify with what he says, and he says it in such a natural way, like he is actually forming the thoughts as he talks, rather than repeating memorized lines. I think what you say about every moment of the show being perfectly thought through is one of the things that has in common with the third season of Skam. A couple of other thoughts: when I first watched the show I had to look up “bell-end” to see what it meant because I had never heard that term before (I think because I’m American rather than British). And the other day I was watching another show from a couple of years before Heartstopper where a character said “Why are we like this?”; I think it’s such a potent line (and song) because I think most people have thought that same thing at some point in their lives.
