Reacting to Heartstopper (One Year Later) - Episode 8 "Boyfriend"

Comments

I believe this is the final video originally uploaded to Vimeo.

Mark Edwards

Hi! All good, just wanted to make sure it wasn’t me. I am binge watching all your reactions to get ready for season 2! Can’t wait to see what else you react to in the future. Thanks 😊

Daniel Frye

Hi Daniel - apologies this is one of a few that were uploaded to Vimeo before it was closed down. I will reupload to Patreon directly tomorrow!

Jackie-Ross Lavender

Hi the video doesn’t work for me

Daniel Frye

Many reviewers have said how glad they were Hearstopper’s story was not like so many “conventional” TV drama shows about queer people, because those always end in sorrow. Whether someone gets murdered or it’s just a breakup, you’re always left sadly pondering What Could Have Been. But not Heartstopper, as we know. Not Heartstopper. How-EV-er. Sneaky little Alice was not above making us THINK that’s how it was going to go. End of Episode 7. Last shot: Charlie’s horrified face, framed by the sky, as his world crashes down around him. In a conventional gay TV show, the final episode has everyone trying to figure out how to go on with their lives after Charlie’s suicide. Cummon, you know that’s how it would have gone down. I’m so glad I didn’t have to watch that episode, as it would have had me sobbing on the floor in a fetal position. But no! But no! We got it the way we did, and I am so happy. But I think Alice didn’t mind scaring us a little. She was jerkin’ our chains, gang, she was jerkin’ our chains.

1 - After the scene with Tori, when I first saw Charlie sit down between Isaac and Tao in Maths I felt such relief. “Oh God he’s still alive!” 2 - When Charlie chews out Ben after the race, in the last Ben close-up a tiny tear starts to roll down his face from the corner of his eye. It’s barely there but it is, and I never saw it till someone told me. 3 - Elle and Tao don’t kiss in their big scene because they CAN’T. They made S1 not knowing if there would be an S2, and in that case you have to assume there will not be. You have to wind up all the stories and not start any new ones. Tao and Elle kissing would have been starting a new one.

Yes, definitely. There was rumors that Imogen could take on the Becky roll, I’m not sure about that. But I do think he’s going to prey on Imogen in s2. But as far as Heartstopper novels, Ben does not come back after Volume 1. Ben being in s2, it’s going to be a complete story change.

Amber

I think he’s referred to in quite a dramatic context in Solitaire, though?

Graham & Ruth May

Yeah, I saw that. They look a bit different side by side, with Omar all dressed up in Loewe and Kit in denim, looking like a giant next to slender Omar.😂

I believe Imogen is going to get tangled up with Ben. That in turn will really piss Nick off, and will hopefully try and steer her away from him. Because let’s face it, what other purpose could Ben have in season two? The next part of his story had to be an add on, since he doesn’t appear in the novels again after volume one.

I was also thinking during this episode which parent would you pick, Sarah or Julio, which main character Nick or Charlie, which best friend but then realised that while Charlie has Tao, Nick doesn't really have a best friend in the show. There's people he hangs around with. He has Sai, Christian, Otis, Harry, Imogen and Ben but not anyone he seems to really have befriended, they're all just there. When he sits on the table by the gate he's usually alone and someone will come over like Harry in episode 3 or Imogen in episodes 2, 3 and 4, or people will be behind him and things will be going on behind him. Obviously he's getting Tara, Darcy, Tao, Elle and Isaac but I'm not sure he has that best friend relationship in his season one friend group.

I love how Mr Ajayi is there with the advice when Charlie needs it. Also when that kid says Sir, aren't you going to tell Nick Nelson that he has to finish the match and he's like nah, I'm good.

On a fun note Kit and Omar have been sat together at a Paris fashion week show today. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1074545746414762/permalink/1484467442089255/

It is definitely all those things Ruth isn't it. I have been working at a temporary accommodation for homeless young people 18 to 25. It is certainly challenging but worth it when you feel like you have made a difference to their life especially with young people who don't have good family relationships.

I looked it up and all the books Isaac read in S1 are: Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert Naruto: Volume 72 by Mashasi Kishimoto Quantum Mechanics: The Theoretical Minimum by Leonard Susskind and Art Friedman A Good Girls Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson Proud: My Autobiography by Gareth Thomas Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Radio Silence by Alice Oseman Gender Explorers: Our Stories of growing up Trans and changing the world by Juno Roche There is no Planet B: A handbook for the make or break years by Mike Berners-Lee

Audrey Gunn

Exactly. Sometimes you get to choose your family ♥️

Frances

It's a very sad reality for so many of us. But, family isn't always bloody <3

Jackie-Ross Lavender

I still need to actually do my video on Nick and Charlie!

Jackie-Ross Lavender

Im sure you’re gonna love it. Would love to hear your thoughts on that ☺️

Frances

Also, I always find it so heartbreaking when people of the LQBTQIA+ community talking about their non supportive families….I remember your first reaction video to episode 8 when you were talking about it briefly and it made me tear up…. It shouldn’t be like this for anyone!!! Happy Pride 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Frances

It’s very rewarding, being in a position to inspire and help young people, whether it’s in the context of teaching or youth work…Frustrating, exhausting at times, but so worth it and I am glad to have some tutoring work now after a bit of a gap, because after a whole working life of teaching, I really miss that connection when I’m not doing it. I think you would be very good at it in whatever setting/context. Look forward to hearing more about it! x❤️

Too many things I want to say: you started with that hello, I have expected you to start singing “Hello, Dolly” 😆 Watching the scene with Tori makes me think about how much she praises Charlie when she introduces him at the beginning of “Solitaire.” She probably thinks the world of him, whether she would say that to his face or not. I found myself wondering why when Charlie sees Nick in the hallway at school begins, he doesn’t notice the black eye then. In the scene between Nick and Tao, I love that Tao says he’s going to remain pissed off at Charlie a little longer - of course he’s not going to stay mad at him forever, and he acknowledges that, which makes me smile. I love all of Stephen Fry’s voice overs as the headmaster of the school. And I think my favorite line in the entire show is “Charlie, don’t let anybody make you disappear” There are a couple of videos out there where people have read all of the books that Isaac does. I got a list of the books from one of them: Dune Messiah, Noughts + Crosses, Naruto, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Quantum Mechanics, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, Proud, Pride and Prejudice, Gender Explorers, and There Is No Planet B. I don’t have a list of the authors, but you can probably look those up. I have to admit, I’ve only read one of those books.

Lane Wright

Yes I remember him saying that. So poignant. I definitely would love to be involved with LGBT youth in some way or another. It's going to be something I start looking into towards the latter end of this year!

Jackie-Ross Lavender

It's SUCH a powerful line. I love it so, so much. We must protect Mr Ajayi at all costs! See now I haven't actually listened to the audio book just yet but I have just downloaded it to listen to on my long bus journey into Central London tomorrow!

Jackie-Ross Lavender

When you were talking about your friend saying that the most rewarding part of teaching was the aspect of being able to help and inspire young people-and how you were wondering how you could get involved in doing something for LGBTQ youth- it made me think of something Edvin said during an interview. He was asked if he had a motto that he tried to live by and his reply was: ‘Be the person you needed when you were younger’.x❤️

Graham & Ruth May

The first time I heard Mr. Ajayi say that powerful line I started to cry….it was a very much eye opening moment for me. Cause I use to have someone in my life make me disappear for a very long time. I’m still planning to get that as a tattoo actually 🫶🏽 On a side note: I’m also listening to the audio book of „Nick&Charlie“ nonstop recently. I love it so much!!! I don’t know why but somehow the person who’s reading from Charlie’s perspective reminds me of you Jackie. ☺️ maybe it’s his voice or the way that he talks or both.. I don’t know 😅 I wish when Heartstopper as a series is over that they would make that book into a movie ♥️
