About the Manga

• Plot

  • Tsuji is the gym teacher at an all girls school, which means that she has to teach sex-ed. She has three main students: Matsuda, a tomboy who’s really into BL, Kashiwa who’s asexual and into animals but not in that way, and Moriya who’s into women and yes in that way. The first lesson is about how to initiate sex, and Tsuji starts handing out condoms and dental dams. This shocks Nakazawa, the school nurse who tells her she can’t just do that. Tsuji takes this opportunity to demonstrate how to initiate by asking Nakazawa if she’d like to test out a dental dam with her, which Nakazawa rejects. 

  •  Tsuji covers topics such as masturbation, menstruation, and a lot of lgbt issues which is great to see in a manga. The girls meanwhile are preparing for the school festival. Kashiwa wants to make a display about animal penises. Just thought I’d throw that in here. Matsuda and Sumire, Moriya’s girlfriend, drag Moriya to a BL event where they meet one of her their favorite authors, Yumeko. Yumeko apparently likes to drink with Tsuji and tells her that, hey, she should just admit that she’s bi and is in love with Nakazawa. On the next class trip Tsuji tells the three girls that she’s bisexual and they’re like oh yeah that makes sense you’re constantly hitting on Nakazawa. 

  • Tsuji then tells Nakazawa, who she’s sharing a room with, that she’s bi and in love with her, and Nakazawa is accepting but turns her down and it’s kinda awkward. Yumeko and the girls convince Tsuji to ask Nakazawa out again but she says she’s no because if it falls through then working together would be really weird. In the school festival the girls have a lot of people leave messages of encouragement, which leads to Nakazawa being like “what the fuck ok hey let’s go on a date,” and they go to the aquarium.

Why it Failed

• I feel it gets wrapped up in trying to have a story it isn’t as educational as it could be

• Man there is a lot of text

• The paneling is a bit pedestrian 

• The characters are a little one note

• Kinda forgets about the sex ed stuff due to the dating plotline at the end

What it Did Well

• It’s quite progressive on topics like women’s masturbation and how it says only the mens section talks about it

• Artwork has a lot of charm to it

• Seems very educational

• Nice visual metaphor without being overly sexual in nature 

• Talks about body insecurities along with literal sex ed

• It’s funny like the love hotel chapter

• Tsuji has a backstory that’s really interesting and helps show how important sex ed is

• Wow this is getting into feminism and even black feminism, I wonder if the author spent time in the west

• This is pretty funny and I like the characters like the BL character talking to the VP about BL magazines

• It makes the characters feel like they're organically talking about the subject matter 

Where it Could Have Gone

• I think they could have discussed gender identity and trans more

• Honestly this was really good and I'm sure anything about uncovered topics is just due to running out of time 

• I didn't like how pressured the date element was a

• I wonder if it’s 400iq translation or Japan has a lot of the same slang like kitty

• So who is the dumbest MC in this?

• I feel porn mags found in the woods is like some sort of SCP

• Maxy Bee thoughts:

  • You might be asking after reading this; “was this really a flop? Was this really cancelled in any meaningful way?” And the answer is that sometimes a top-class letterer works mostly on series that perform very well, and any flops they have worked on have already been covered in our podcast’s long history.

    • Serious answer: A year-long run on a relatively small platform where the afterwords make it clear that production wasn’t always smooth strongly suggests that an option for renewal wasn’t taken, whether by editorial or by one or both of the creators. Considering the heavy research demonstrated in the bibliographies, and afterwords showing how often work stalled for Kikiki Tataki, I can see this being possible, though in this specific case we do not have explicit confirmation. 

  • We have an equivalent to porn magazines left by the riverbed here in the UK (and I’ve heard it happens in the US and Canada), which is woods porn - pornography abandoned in the woods. What’s YOUR local equivalent for abandoned smut?

  • An advantage of excellent translator notes in the back of the volumes is that there’s barely a need for trivia at all!
