Reacting to Fellow Travelers - Episode 5

Comments

My god, so much to unpack in this episode but it is now after midnight so I will come back later with a fresh mind on what I think.

Audrey Gunn

Jet, Essence and Ebony were staples in my house growing up. I didn’t realize how important Jet magazine was until I got older. Love that they added this piece of history for Marcus.

If you want to react to something scifi and mystery i recommend Bodies on Netflix. A great suspensful series with a wonderful surprising queer storyline.

Tim: "Promise you won't write." Hawk: "I won't." - Did Hawk mean "I won't write." or "I won't promise."?

Jose Matutina

I think in a way Hawk is protecting Tim by marrying Lucy. He's protecting him from himself - because he knows he can't give Tim what he wants. And He's protecting him from the noose closing in on the LGBTQ in Washington in this episode alone. The raids, Tim's close encounters with Cohn and even the conversion therapy practices. He's seeing what could happen to himself and Tim in this toxic environment. He knows that he can get by by lying and compartmentalised- but Tim really can't do those things and will probably be in even more danger. Pushing Tim away benefits them both but breaks both of their hearts.

I think you raised a good point about loving someone and letting them go. I think it is equally hard for Hawk because when he was telling Tim that he was going to marry Lucy, you could see on his face how hard it was. I really think that Hawk and Tim are soulmates, and I think you can have many kinds of soulmates, but I think they're the romantic kind. Right person, wrong time, and all of that (I've had one of those myself, won't bore you with the details). It makes me wonder if Hawk is just continuing to get by as well through the later decades. Still love Frankie and Marcus so much and I'm glad Marcus wants to write about things that matter.

Jamie

Excellent reaction Jackie, Thank You! Yes, Hawk truly loves Tim and like so many others he’s just trying to navigate through life. So many issues and triggers in this episode.

Diane Furlong

This was a hard episode, on a slightly lighter note, is anyone else getting Collins and Angel vibes from Marcus and Frankie? I feel like theirs will be a great love story, or maybe I just need some sort light in the story…

Erin

This was a tough episode. I’ve watched it twice so far. I’ll be back after dinner to watch your reaction Jackie

Diane Furlong

Jackie, to reply to the S2 question: I've seen it listed everywhere as a limited series. Which suggests it's a one and done series. I can't imagine there being more source material to cover if what we suspect happens at the end of eps 7&8 based on the lead up of events so far, actually occurs. Would feel pretty complete and the story fulfilled over just the one season.

This one hurt my heart on a personal level... I'll comment again when I can put it into words.

Can’t agree more!

Frances

I was crying the last couple of minutes… this episode… I just can’t fathom… 😔

Frances

I cry a bit more with every episode, i'm going to be a puddle by the time we reach the final one 😢

This show has really gotten to me. It’s so beautifully acted. I find the complexity of characters to be very real and believable. I watched the episode before this was aired but I found it to be more meaningful watching it together with you. Your reactions are always authentic and truth driven. Thank you.

Jackie, although Senator Smith was not a real person, he is inspired by Lester Hunt, a senator from around this time. He represented another state, but his son was found to have solicited sex from a man and it caused the father to commit suicide in his office. So although most of the Smiths are fiction, that aspect was inspired by a real person.
