Rewatching Young Royals Season 2 - Episode 2

Gooooood evening beautiful Patreon family,

T-MINUS 1 WEEK UNTIL SEASON 3!!!!

I am starting to get really, really excited for the new season. But before we get there we've got to get out hearts broken in this season!

See you in the comments,

Love, always ♥️

I would feel the same way if Omar was actually a 16 year old boy. But both Omar and Tommy (Marcus) were born in 1998. They are just very very different in stature. Marcus is huge next to Simon :0)

I hate that scene with Marcus and Simon on the sofa. Simon looks like a small child besides Marcus and everything about that feels so, so wrong. It makes me shiver every time 😣

I agree with everything you said Ruth. I hate Marcus he is so manipulative.

I can’t help myself when it comes to Marcus! 😂

Ruth May

Frances, you are so right!

Dennis Verner

Well, in Simon’s room when Wille said it 😊 The parallels in this show are incomparable 😍

Frances

I love your rants 😉☺️

im so excited about s3 im a bit of a writer and I just feel like from a writers pov lisa really has been laying the foundations and the tracks for s3 all throughout the show from season one already. She knew what the ending of the series would be before season one even had finished being written and I feel like she has a specific message that she wants to say. Like from a narrative perspective I just have a lot of hope for this season and also I feel like the parallels and symbolism and metaphors have been extremely consistent throughout so I’m not worried. :)

There’s almost too much to say about this episode, so I won’t say all of it. 😂 I think the frog prince globe isn’t quite the last link that Wille has with Erik, because he still has his silver engraved cigarette case and lighter, which we see him holding in bed in a later episode. But for me, it’s an important symbol of what they shared as brothers who were members of the royal family and it represents their fate, to become king. Erik gives it to Wille and tragically dies before he can be king, then it’s smashed to pieces here by Wille refusing to back down when the royal court machine grinds into action. Very telling symbolism. Then we see the smashed globe again in focus when Simon goes to Wille’s room in episode 5 and puts his fingers inside it without cutting his hand, suggesting that only he can reach the frog-prince inside. I promise not to go off on a rant about Marcus, although it’s very tempting. All I will say is that throughout this episode, you can clearly see Simon trying to force himself to develop feelings for him and failing. In particular, I love the detail that when Marcus asks Simon which film genre he’d like to watch, Simon replies, ‘horror’, as if he’s trying to recreate the movie night at school when he and Wille watched the horror movie together and then shared their first kiss. Marcus then says that they can take it slow, which he seems to forget quite easily once Simon tries to tell him in later episodes that he’s not looking for a serious relationship. He’s a character that I can’t feel any sympathy for, because he’s not honest about his agenda, even with himself and attempts to gaslight Simon into believing that he’s what Simon needs. Ok, it turned into a bit of a rant after all! 😂 Don’t get me started on Marcus in episodes 4 and 6! 🤐

This may be scandalous to admit here, but I’m not particularly scared about next season, in part, I think, because this show engages me more more intellectually than it does emotionally. Don’t get me wrong: it absolutely does engage me intellectually, and I am unquestionably impressed with the level of acting and the high-quality of filmmaking in the show. But I found myself more emotionally engaged by Heartstopper, Skam, and Druck, maybe because all three of them were dealing more with the personal growth of the characters and less with the greater societal issues of class and privilege, which are more intellectual concerns. This show really does deal with both, but it’s always been easier for me to relate to the other three shows than to this one. All that being said, I am looking forward to the final season to see how the story resolves and what more it has to say about these class issues.

As an actor I watch the scene with Simon starting to write his song wearing Wille's jumper and once again I'm amazed that this was Omar's first acting gig (granted it's season two.) But he was every bit as good in season 1. What a talent! Also note Simon says "cozy" in Marcus' apartment. Where have we heard that before?

Dennis Verner

Note, again, the parallel (I love these). After their first kiss in season 1, Wille says he's "not like that" but he still wants to be friends. It comes back to bite him here as Simon says they can certainly talk in school (they kind of have to) but just as "friends."

Dennis Verner

Going back to episode 1 as Simon goes to talk to Wille in the library, notice the look Simon exchanges with Malin and the smile she gives him. Anna has talked about that scene.

Dennis Verner

Yes he sings happy birthday in spanish 🩷

Looking forward to watching this tomorrow.
