Procedural Generated Pictures, Plans and Polls. (December Update)

Hey everyone!

I hope all of you exceptionally extraordinary people are doing extraordinarily great today.

The Mario Wonder video is online and I thought it’s a good time to share some of my upcoming plans, as well as get a bit of feedback from you wonderful people on where to take the channel next!

But first the Mario video.
It looks like YouTube’s algorithm god released us from our dark prison.
Hooray - the blood offerings did the trick!
The Mario video pulled more views within three hours than the Outer Wilds video did in its lifetime, which is great!
Good algorithm! Have a ritual blood sacrifice!

However, there was a bit of controversy in the comments of the Mario Wonder video.

Some people weren’t too happy about my use of a bunch of AI-generated pics during the Mario movie discussion, so I thought it might be best to address this.

My general idea when using the AI art during the Mario movie part was to mirror the Mario movie with it.
You know, the Mario movie is a bit of a soulless calculating product that uses art as a means to fulfill financial ends, instead of displaying art for the value of art itself.
I liked the idea of making this point while using AI art because, you know, AI art is soulless, artificially created art that is used to make it easier to “create” art as a product.

There is always a financial aspect to art.
This financial aspect is why the Mario movie is the way it is.
And AI-generated art is kind of the ultimate perversion of the financial aspect of art.

It’s also why there are missing eyeballs and hands that look like claws in the pics used in the video.

I wanted those pictures to be obviously artificial because at least in my mind there is a bit of a parallel between the artificiality of the Mario movie and the artificiality of AI art.

So that was my line of thought when I put the AI art into the video, but looking back at it from a distance and after reading a bit of feedback, I think I may not have handled that especially gracefully.

There are huge unsolved copyright concerns when it comes to AI art, as AI is arguably trained with the stolen work of every artist who ever lived.
When it is ethical to use AI-generated content is still an open debate that will only become fiercer the more mainstream AI tools become.

Looking back at it, I probably should have either addressed the parallel I was thinking of directly in the video, or not use AI art at all.
You know, if I want to draw a parallel I probably should actually draw it.

So I understand why some people aren’t too happy about the AI art in the video and I’ll be more careful with this going forward. Though I honestly never intended to use much AI art going forward - not only due to ethical concerns but also because I like my humans to have five fingers.

I'll also pin the text above under the video because, as some of you have rightfully pointed out, the AI art shouldn't be without context in the video.

Okay, so that's the first thing.
The second thing: My plans for the future.

The very next thing I want to tackle is one of the From Software games.
I’ll wait for the game awards show to see if Elden Ring’s DLC gets a release date there.
If it does I’ll tackle Elden Ring next otherwise it will be Bloodborne.

That video is going to take a bit longer than the past ones, because of the Holidays and because I need to take it a bit slower for a week or two since I’m a bit exhausted - so expect that video in the middle of January.

So what’s in store for next year?

There are a bunch of videos that I want to make, which I expect most of you are interested in. We will probably discuss the TTYD remake, there will very likely be a new 3D Mario next year alongside Nintendo’s next console and we’ll probably look back at Odyssey too while at it. We’ll continue to discuss the Zelda games and there is a shimmer of hope that we will tackle Silksong as well.

Most of those topics are videos that I expect you wonderful people to be interested in.

However, I’d also like to tackle a bunch of other things that are a bit more experimental and I’d love to get a bit of feedback on what topics you are interested in.

Below are a bunch of ideas for videos.

If you think any of those ideas sound like a video topic you’d be interested in watching, then feel free to vote for it and feel free to vote for as many as you like!

The vote here isn’t meant to create a definitive list of what to create next year but to help me plan ahead and make sure I end up creating things people actually want to see.

Just pick as many or as few video ideas as sound interesting to you!

Already done?

Well, thank you so much for voting, here take this imaginary “I voted" pin as a small thank you!

Thank you so much for your support and I hope all of you have a wonderful Christmas!

Best,
Ceave

Question for Ceave: What are your plans for Christmas/ New Years?

Andrew Medford

Thanks for the feedback! That's actually something on my radar - I'm aware of this and plan to end the vids always with a glimmer of hope no matter the topic going forward.

Stefan Maier

I haven't played most of the games in the poll and don't know much about game history, so I'm open to all sorts of interesting topics. I'll only throw in a thought: some of your videos end on a rather negative note, or struggle to bounce back from the negative points you bring up, which I think is unfortunate since it's clear you genuinely enjoyed the respective game. Your Hollow Knight retrospective is one of my favourite videos on the whole platform, from the script and tone to the overall production quality, and I think it'd be unfortunate if it were to remain in the minority on your channel. I'll gladly spend my evening watching a video of yours, but if the topic features too much negativity it leaves me somewhat exhausted.

Illyon

Hi Ceave, I strongly suggest not talking about Gamergate. It will get a ton of views but either way your image will be branded with hatred by an opposing view. While I love how well you articulate your thoughts and why you feel the way you do, on this discussion, I think the vast majority will ignore the thought you put in. I'm aware there are other topics that are a bit heated but Gamergate literally ended with death threats, suicides and full lockdowns of open-source information sources to either stop or ensure false information being spread depending on who you ask. I am scared for you if you do it so please be very careful if it does win out  I'm extremely curious about what rabbit hole the DK video will do so that gets my vote but they are all great ideas

Dingle Dee

As a Canadian I can confirm, Canada has been devastated by the holes everyone has dug

The Holy Wooomy but its Woah-me not Woo-me and idc that that not how that is that that to be that, that is that that that I like

As much as I trust in your ability to produce something thoughtful and entertaining from any of these topics, I would personally probably skip the Hogwarts Legacy/JKR/Harry Potter video. The topic is just very exhausting for me to engage with at this point, as someone with a personal stake in the surrounding issues.

Charlotte Aranea

Thanks for bringing it up, I had no idea there was an active celeste modding scene! I'll check some mods out!

Stefan Maier

Putting AI artwork in a monetized YouTube video is ontologically at the very least parallel if not outright equivalent to 'selling AI art', and AI art isn't 'drawing inspiration from possible stolen artwork', it's literally fueled by massive data-scraping operations training models on terabytes of stolen images. Ceave said that he used Stable Diffusion, who are already being sued for using the LAION-5B dataset, which contains an obscene amount of stolen images. NovelAI, which is based directly on Stable Diffusion, is even worse, because they based their model on a scrape of Danbooru, meaning they not only stole the artwork, but were able to harvest the tags on all the artwork, cutting out the need to pay people to tag and classify the art as training data. The entire institution is morally bankrupt.

SquidHominid

After the launch of Elden Ring, in which I played for 17 hours straight,I never imagined I would end up praying that the DLC does NOT get a release date. I simply love Bloodborne more and want to see that video instead.

Mexiflan

I saw it as fighting fire with fire. You should just be able to use actual footage under fair use (critique is by far the least ambiguous example), except that YouTube's broken AI copyright system would flag it anyway. By using a different broken AI that makes the copyrighted video look not quite right, the check passes, just as if neither AI existed in the first place.

Metallicity

Celeste and Inscryption in the lead. Lot of people with good taste here!

TurboK

If it enhances the point you're making in the video, go ahead and use AI art. As for the poll, I'm excited to see Celeste up there doing real well! It's become my favorite platformer by far, the mechanics are so tight and the advanced tricks are fun to pull off, and then once you go down the rabbit hole of mods, the fun could go on for a loooong time (I have 800+ hours in Celeste lol) Question for you, Ceave: Have you seen / played any Celeste mods? If not, take a look at the Strawberry Jam Collab that released early this year if you get a chance. Over 100 levels, almost all of them having unique graphics, music, and some new mechanics as well! The difficulty ranges from stuff that wouldn't be out of place in the base game to extremely insane stuff where spending a number of hours on one room is the norm.

cousinoer5

The AI art made my brother laugh. 10/10 video Have a great holidays! Looking forward to next year :)

Yoshi with hat

It's currently on hold for a while but I do want to use it for things eventually again!

Stefan Maier

I haven't seen the video yet and I'm not an artist so I may not be the best person to comment but I think your specific use of AI art here was fine but you should've probably explicitly stated why you were using it. But then again there are always some people that hate anything that is called AI.

Jehan

I had another question. What are your plans for the regular Ceave Gaming channel? While I love both channels, your regular one is great as well.

Andrew Medford

Personal opinion on AI art: yes AI draws inspiration from possible stolen artwork, but then again: 1) A lot of people cant afford hand drawn artwork, especially in these volumes 2) Us humans are also very susceptible to suggestions, even if we think we aren’t, meaning that every ‘original artstyle’ is at least in part inspired by another, whether the artist realizes it or not 3) A lot of art, and not only drawings, especially contemporary art, is not so much art because of technique, but because of the idea behind it. Your use of AI to mix Mario Movie and Carmen is innovative in itself, and therefore at least part of the generated art is originally yours. so as long as ur not selling AI generated artwork or deliberately made it seem as if it were non-AI; especially since you deliberately used AI art to put power to the overarching theme, I don’t see any issues with it and support your use of them

Jesper

You're welcome

Andrew Medford

I currently have no challenge runs planned, but I do want to produce some more of them eventually since I always enjoyed doing those. But I honestly don't know when I'll come around doing those. My current plan for the Mario RPG is to discuss it alongside TTYD in spring since the two are heavily related.

Stefan Maier

Do you still have plans on doing Mario Wonder Challenge videos on the gaming channel like Coinless and Crouching and maybe a Super Mario RPG Retrospective since the remake just came out?

TheLegoNation

I crunched the trailer video out in, I think, 36 hours after I first saw the trailer. It was pretty stressful, but with videos like this, you have to be fast on YT. Thanks for the kind words!

Stefan Maier

I think it didn't occur to me immediately that the video had AI elements until I noticed that some eyes were weird.. that said, while I'm no fan of AI imagery, it was actually a really neat attempt considering the parallelism going on with the Carmen. So, while most AI art is without souls, I think the way you went has at least sense, context and isn't completely lifeless (I imagine that looking for an artist to produce those pictures would consume a lot of time and money.) I also agree that the parallelism within AI arts and soulless cash grabs should have been fully presented, but IMO it would have also ruined the pacing of the video itself. So, in a sense, I think it's something that deserves it's own video. One last thing, I love the directions you are taking with your retrospectives even if you touch game I have or haven't played. Damn, sometimes I think that having played some of those games resulted in spoilers for your videos!

Regola

Oh dang, thanks for letting me know! I'll look into it!

Stefan Maier

Several of these ideas sound great. I do have a question though. When you initially came back with the trailer analysis in June. It was like only a day or two after the actual trailer came out. Were you planning on making that before you saw the trailer? Also was it hard to make a video in that short a time? I loved the mario wonder video BTW, and had no issues with the AI art. I thought it was kind of fun!

Andrew Medford

FYI it looks like we're only able to select one option in the poll.

TripleFlipAndMeow

I don't get what all the fuss with the AI pics is about (aside from the obvious copyright concerns). I think the use of AI art was very fitting in the video's context. I mean Jesus, guys. Give poor Ceave a break lol. Happy to hear the new video did better than the last one. I enjoyed it very much. 5/5 shiny fuzzies as always ! (Is there an application form to volunteer for the next blood sacrifice btw ?) Also take your time with the new video, man. We don't want you to bust your ass over the holidays. We love and appreciate you, Ceave. Since this is probably the last time hearing from you this year, I wish you the frohest of Weihnachten and the gutesten of Rutsche in the neues Jahr ! Take it easy bro.

EspressoDepresso

I'll be honest, I was tired when watching the video and didn't notice the fact that the art was AI-generated, but it did feel unsettling regardless, which I assumed was the point. I personally feel like the main "benefit" of using AI art in this could have easily been done by a human artist and gotten across better, although obviously I wouldn't expect you to put in the resources to make so many stills for the video. IMHO, unless you're actively riffing on AI and want to demonstrate that, it's probably not worth including in the video, although that seems to be basically what you've decided already.
