I called tech support, but I got Cindi (with an I):
cindi (with an I) was very helpful, telling me that maybe I'd left a fork in the machine like she'd, you know, left a fork in the microwave. But if I took the microwave out, it'd work just fine and my hard disk thingie would be good to eat!
While a very pleasant person to talk to over Zoom, I have decided to finish this up tomorrow, since I know I did not stick any forks in my computer, and have a suspicion my problem my extend from a roomie who enjoys using other people's computers, and does not practice safe surfing.
