That's what I noticed as well! No doubt this whole thing started out as a way for Light to bring justice to the world (a "Noble" quest, even if the way he did it while speaking of himself as the god of the new world was totally narcissistic and extreme) but the more it goes, the more his pride takes over his desire for true justice and now he's killing innocents because he cannot acceot that L might have an advantage over him :/ he's losing himself more and more (and I'm loving the drama!!)

They both are making aggressive moves in order to prove they won't back down. If Light hides just because he can - say not killing despite having months of murders already written down in the case of a hospital visit, or hey doing it outside of the house when the cameras were present - he refuses to "lose". Ie, back down. It's this fun-ass chess match. Of course, irl death is no fun matter but Light is compartmentalizing.
