2019-06-05 13:54:24 +0000 UTCNear resembles L more but Mello is kind of a more interesting character in his own right because he kind of is in his own way similar to both Light and L which adds his own flavor to the mix. His difference gives more room to be his own character and develop over time compared to Near. Remember we only have 10 episodes to wrap up the entire story. Both Near and Mello looked upto L, but Mello seems to be more interested in avenging L and catching Kira at all costs to prove his worth of being better successor to L. Interesting thing is Near was willing to work with Mello but Mello refused. Near is more interested in solving the puzzle that L couldn't, calling L a loser.
