I think the point of no return was when Jesse decided to kill Gus' dealers. Nothing was ever the same after that. Walt knew it was only a matter of time until he was replaced/killed so he started plotting to kill Gus. Things were actually going well at Gus' lab in season 3 until Jesse started stealing meth. So I wouldn't be so quick to put all the blame on Walt.
