It wasnt just Madeline who boosted Homelanders ego, she was his emotional attachment, the mommy and family replacement until he saw her lies and found real family. Vought actually raised Homelander to be how he is too, to act and feel like hes better than eveyone since he was old enough to learn that. I think the deep being all sticky after sitting for too long is because his skin is also like a fishes too.
